Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia, I am your host. And I am the owner, founder, blogger, nutrition consultant. Well, I guess at this point, one of the nutrition consultants behind the brand Fed and Fit. Our team is growing, and it’s very exciting. And we’re back with another weekly Fed and Fit podcast episode. It’s a very fun, informal 30-minute show. I like to sprinkle in the occasional dive really deep into the weeds of scientific topics, nutrition science topics, like dairy 101 is one that I’m working on right now. I like to invite really wonderful guests to come on and share their experience. And on that note, today is kind of in line with that. I like to do the occasional reverse interview, which is where a Fed and Fit listener/reader writes in with a wonderful question, and instead of giving them exactly what they want, which is an email response. Or however they reached out to me; whether it was through messaging or something. I ask them if they’d be willing to come on to my podcast to record our conversation with the hopes that it resonates with more folks out there. More of you that are listening. So today is just exactly one of those occasions. I’m really excited to welcome Haven onto the show today. Haven lives up in Victoria, British Columbia. She’s a graduate student over at the University of Victoria. She’s getting her Master of Science in Hydrology, which I really geek out over. I think that’s really cool. If you're wondering what Hydrology is, because I asked {laughs} it’s essentially a geography type subject. But zeroing in on focusing on water. But, we’re not going to talk about that today. But I think it’s so neat to know what people’s backgrounds are. Haven, welcome to the show! Haven: Hi; thanks Cassy. Cassy Joy: Yeah. I’m excited to have you. Well, as always with these reverse interviews, I’m going to let Haven run the show. She gets to ask whatever question she’s got. I’m at your disposal for the next 25 to 30 minutes.

Ep. 123: Transitioning from Counting Macros | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:35

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am excited today because I'm joined by another wonderful Fed and Fit listener. Today we’re joined by Kelsey from Austin, Texas. She's a petroleum engineer. And if you're new to the show, and you're new to reverse interviews, it is just a reader or a listener will write in with a really fabulous question, and instead of answering their question via e-mail, which is what they've asked me to do {laughs}. I instead invite them to come on the show to have a conversation, where we can talk through their question with the hopes that if this goes up on the podcast, it resonates with more folks that are out there. And I really think that is going to be the case today. Kelsey, welcome to the show! Kelsey: Thank you, I appreciate it. Cassy Joy: Yeah, definitely. Well, just out of curiosity, where did you get your degree in petroleum engineering? Kelsey: I went to Texas A&M University. Cassy Joy: Whoop! Kelsey: In College Station. A little birdie told me you went there as well. It was a wonderful place and I enjoyed it. Cassy Joy: I was hopeful. It’s got a great petroleum engineering program, so I was wondering if you're an Aggie. That’s so exciting! And football season is around the corner. Kelsey: I know. I’m so excited. I’ve got to get myself up to a game. I try to go once every season, but we’ll see if that’s going to happen. Cassy Joy: Oh, that’s so good. I actually just had; I’m doing a surprise. I {laughs} guess I really shouldn’t give too many details, because we haven’t announced it yet. But I’m doing a collaborate eBook with three other bloggers. And we’re scheduling the big photo shoot. Because we’re going to do about a week worth of photos together. They’re coming to San Antonio for it. And as soon as the Aggie football schedule was announced, I reached back out, and I was like, “Guys, I’m sorry to be such a Texan right now,

He is the bestselling author of the Primal Blueprint, former world class athlete, endurance athlete, one of the leading voices of the evolutionary health movement and publisher of www.MarksDailyApple.com. I guarantee if you’ve googled something paleo related, you’ve found a good answer over on that website at some point in time. {laughs} It is the world’s most visited blog on paleo, primal, and ancestral health. And he will be releasing his latest book, The Keto Reset Diet this October 3rd, 2017. Welcome to the show, Mark! Mark Sisson: Thanks Cassy, great to be here! Cassy Joy: Yeah, great to have you here! That was a very, very short introduction. Mark Sisson: {laughs} Cassy Joy: I thought about preparing a longer intro and a longer bio for you, and it would have just been reading bullet after bullet of impressive feat. But if there’s any extended intro that you’d like to give folks, we’d love to hear it. Mark Sisson: Well; where do we start, and where do we end. Basically the only other things; not only. The main things right now are we just launched the Primal Kitchen food line. So I’m the founder of Primal Kitchen foods. And then we have two restaurants open under the Primal Kitchen flag in South Bend, Indiana, and in Culver City, in Los Angeles. So our restaurant business is taking off, as well. So I would add that to the existing bio. Cassy Joy: Those are big ones! Man I had some mayo last night! {laughs} Mark Sisson: Mmm.

Ep. 121: Reverse Interview on Aging and Weight Loss | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:24

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia, owner and founder of Fed and Fit. And today, I’m really excited to bring you guys another reverse interview. And I’m getting more brief with the explanation of what a reverse interview is. But essentially, a fabulous Fed and Fit reader or listener wrote in a with a great question, and instead of having that dialogue via email, I invite this very gracious person to come onto the show to record our conversation with the hopes that it will resonate with other folks out there. And I have a feeling today’s call will do that. So today I am chatting with Jeff. He is a teacher just outside Houston, Texas. And he’s got some great questions stored up. Welcome to the show, Jeff! Jeff: Hey, Cassy! I have a question as far as, I guess the relationship of eating right versus the working out. Just a little bit of background. I’ve been a cyclist for 10 years. Three years ago, I had a major appendectomy, and I lost major weight. Probably more than I should have lost. But being in the hospital isn’t always the best. But I put on all that weight and a little bit extra. And aside from cycling, I really just don’t like doing workouts for the sake of working out. I like having a purpose. So I’m wondering, is it possible just to simply eat better, keep doing what I’m doing as far as athletics, and still expect the weight to come off? Or is there an expectation that you are having to do weights and those kinds of workouts, as well. Cassy Joy: That’s a really good question. How long has this been happening? Where it’s just slowed down a little bit? Jeff: I guess probably the last 6 months or so. Like I said, the appendectomy was 3 years ago. And I got down from my normal of about 170-ish, I got down to 145. And I did a pretty decent job. I had to put some weight back on, obviously. And instead of using it as a way to kind of reset how I was eating,

Ep. 120: Reverse Interview on Diabetes and Fat Intake | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:54

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m really excited about today. Bringing you a very special reverse interview. If you're brand new to the Fed and Fit podcast, and maybe this is your first episode you’ve ever listened to, you might be wondering what the heck is a reverse interview? {laughs} It’s a good question. So reverse interviews; and forgive me, long-time listeners because you’ve heard this a few times. But reverse interviews are when Fed and Fit listeners and readers write in with really good questions. And instead of keeping our dialogue in an email, and responding back and forth to each other, I invite these very gracious readers and listeners to come on my podcast so that they can ask me their questions. Essentially interview me for about 30 minutes. Ask me whatever they like. We have a nice discussion with the hopes that some of this dialogue can really help others out there. That maybe puzzling, or working around some similar concepts. So, today I’m very excited to invite Fed and Fit listener Elaine on the show today. She lives in Dallas, Texas. So she’s a fellow Texas girl with two teenage daughters up there in Dallas. And she works full time in finance. Thank you so much for coming on the show today, Elaine! Elaine: Well thank you! I’m so excited to get a chance to ask my question. Because I’ve learned a lot listening to your podcast over the last few years. So a little bit more about me; I went gluten free about 8 years ago, and I’ve been paleo for a little over 2. I did that because of health issues. I have Crohn’s disease, and some other autoimmune type stuff. And really have found tremendous help through what we eat. So at our house, we totally believe in the power of food to heal and how important it is for our health. So even with that, we may not always make the best choices. But we try. And now my husband has recently been diagnosed as diabetic. So we’re trying to modify the plate some to fit his needs, as well. And when I do the cooking, we eat most of our dinners at home.

I am the owner and founder of www.FedandFit.com, author of the Fed and Fit book, and also creator of the Fed and Fit Project online. A food and fitness program. I’m really excited about today’s episode. I have invited a fabulous listener to come on the show today for a reverse interview. If this is your first introduction to a reverse interview, I’ll briefly tell you what that is. A reverse interview is when a reader, or a listener, writes in with a great question. And instead of emailing them back or responding to their question like they’ve asked, I invite them to come on my podcast to record their question and our conversation. And it’s so nice when they say yes. {laughs} So I ask folks to come on when I really think their question could resonate with other listeners out there. So today I’m excited to introduce you guys to Emily. Emily is an interior designer. I’m trying to harness some of those skills coming up really soon, Emily. And she lives in the Chicago area. Welcome to the show, Emily! Emily: Thank you so much for having me. This is such an honor that I get to be on your podcast. And thank you for even just trusting me to kind of take the reins and ask you whatever I want. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, I’m so excited! These are so much fun for me. Well that’s exactly it. I guess I left that off. Emily is going to interview me, and ask whatever she wants. I’m her interview; oh gosh. Those words. They always escape me. Interviewee? I don’t know what I am. {laughs} but I’m at your disposal for the next 30 minutes. So any questions you have, I’d love to chat. Emily: Awesome. So yeah, today I wanted to kind of focus on navigating food sensitivities, food allergies, or maybe someone that might be starting a new health program. Kind of like your 28-day Fed and Fit program. Where you might eliminate some foods you might typically eat, and how to handle some of those restrictions when you're d...

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m really excited about today’s episode. My goodness. When I first heard about this piece of technology, I think my jaw actually dropped. I was like; no way, this actually exists! This is so neat. I am so excited today to welcome Shireen Yates, owner and founder of Nima! And this little gadget; she’s going to tell you much more about it. {laughs} She knows the story better than I do! About how everything came into play and how the really incredible Nima gluten sensor is now available to us today. But if you guys caught the review I did on my blog, I reviewed the Nima sensor because it’s this little pocket-sized piece of technology. It’s incredibly slick. It pairs with your phone, and allows you, if you are extremely sensitive to gluten, or even have an allergy like folks who have celiac, to be able to test food in real time and get an answer as far as is there actual gluten, the gluten protein, found in my food. Because so much of what’s out there, even though it’s labeled as gluten free, there could be cross contamination. And it’s really; it’s an answered prayer in a lot of ways for many folks. Because we don’t have to wonder. We don’t have to wait until we get home and we get that stomachache. So it’s just such a neat piece of technology, and I’m really excited. So thank you, first and foremost, Shireen, for putting this together and working with your amazing team. But welcome to the Fed and Fit podcast. We’re excited to hear about your story. We’re excited to hear more about Nima. And just welcome to the show! Shireen Yates: Thank you! I’m so excited to be here. It’s just an honor. We love the review you did of Nima, and very, very excited to just talk about the product, and really how it’s fitting into people’s lives since we launched.

She’s coming on the show today not only to introduce us to the brand new book that she and Henry are just releasing; it came out 6 days ago as this episode airs on August 1st. I wanted to go through all the A months; and there’s only one other A month. But I was going to say April! {laughs} It came out on August 1st, 2017. You guys, I have my hands on a copy, it’s absolutely wonderful. Michelle, thank you so much for coming on the show. And welcome to the Fed and Fit listeners! Michelle Tam: Oh, thank you! It’s my pleasure to be here. I’m so excited. Cassy Joy: Oh, me too! This is going to be fun. You can do a better job than anybody explaining the book. Could you please tell us a little bit about Ready or Not cookbook? What went into this idea. This is, I believe, book number two. The first one, Nom Nom Paleo, is a must have if you listeners don’t already have a copy of it. And after having flipped through Ready or Not, so much love and energy and attention and thought went into every single one of those pages. So it’s sure to be another great addition to your collection. Michelle, I’d love it if you could tell us a little bit in your own words about Ready or Not cookbook? Michelle Tam: So, Ready or Not cookbook is definitely a family affair. So, Henry, my husband, and I have been working on this I think 3 years. And if you see the book, it totally is 100%. So, Henry does all of the design, all the photos, all the cartoons, all the layout. And I do all the recipes and the snark. So the voice is me. And you see our kids kind of sprinkled throughout the book. But how this cookbook is different from our last cookbook, and I think from a lot of traditional cookbooks.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And this is the show where we talk about a lot of things related to food, fitness; but mostly mindset. You know, the piece that surrounds it all. And that is exactly what we’re going to talk about today. Thank you for being patient with me. Last week was a crazy week. So we have an episode down, but we’re back up today with a mindset episode, and we’ve got some really, really great ones lined out for not only the rest of the month of August, but on through the rest of the summer. Ok, so today we’re going to talk. It’s a relatively short episode, I think. But we’re going to cover the concept of healing unhealthy comparisons. And it’s an interesting topic. It’s one that’s been rattling around in my mind for a while. And I think that what I’m really speaking to. Is when we think about looking online, looking to social for friends. For friendships. For companionship. For partners. People who we feel like we can identify with online, whether that person also has children. Or whether that person also does paleo. We want to think that because we have maybe one common ground with somebody, that I think a part of our human nature is to desire to have then all common grounds with that person. And what can come from that, is sort of an unhealthy relationship. Usually in our own heads. About where we start comparing ourselves to that person. How are we measuring up to this person that we’ve identified with? So let’s say in the context of parenthood. Let’s say if you are a mom, and you see somebody else online who also has two kids. And maybe they’re the same ages as you. And maybe they are also working in the blog world. But they seem, for whatever reason, to just be a little bit better than you at certain things. Or at least that’s how we see it. We it as, gosh they get so much done. It seems like they’re house is always so much cleaner. And it seems like they’re able to give more time to their business. And it seems like they’re able to have more one on one time with their c...

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit Project. I’m am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia, of Fed and Fit. And today I’m joined by a lovely guest. Her name is Phoebe Lapine. Phoebe is a food and health writer, gluten free chef, wellness personality, culinary instructor, and speaker born and raised in New York City, where she continues to live and eat. Great places to eat there. On her award-winning blog, Feed Me Phoebe, she shares recipes for healthy comfort food and insights about balanced healthy lifestyle choices, beyond what's on your plate. Her forthcoming memoir, The Wellness Project, chronicles her journey with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and how she finally found the middle ground between health and hedonism by making one lifestyle change one month at a time. Phoebe, I’m so excited to have you on the show. Thank you for coming on today! Phoebe Lapine: Oh thank you for having me. Cassy Joy: Absolutely. It’s a true pleasure. I’m excited to hear about your story. And I love this, one lifestyle change one month at a time. It’s something that I tackle in a portion of my business. And I think it’s very, very wise. But I told you before the show I was going to hand the baton off to you, because I would like for you to tell a little bit more about your story. Nobody knows you like you do. So if you don’t mind, I would love to hear a little bit about your health journey, a little bit about your book, your blog, and I guess some of your biggest takeaways. Phoebe Lapine: Absolutely. So, my health journey and my food career journey actually started around the exact same time. But it took a few years for them to kind of intersect and combine into one. So I started blogging a year after graduating college, just kind of on a whim. At the time, my food outlook didn’t really have anything to do with the nourishment from each part of a meal, and more had to do with the comfort of cooking and the social nourishment it gave me.

I'm a certified nutrition consultant that has a passion for, not only mindset coaching in general, but covering the full gamut of what it takes to really live a confident, healthy lifestyle. So, thank you so much for joining us today. I am joined by a new listener; well I don’t know actually if you're a new listener. You're new to the show! {laughs} Casie: Correct. Cassy Joy: Her name is Casie. And I mistakenly called her Cassy when we first got on the line, and I was so embarrassed, because you would think that a Cassy and a Casie are the ones that should probably be able to tell when to say the right name. So, Casie is joining us today for a reverse interview. And if you're a new listener here, a reverse interview, just to quickly give you a description, is when a Fed and Fit listener or reader writes in with a really excellent question. And so I, instead of answering their question via e-mail, I like to invite them to come onto the podcast, to ask their question over a recorded call. Because, I have a hunch that Casie's questions, and maybe the conversation we’re going to have, is a really relatable one that I think is going to resonate with a bunch of folks. So, she's coming on the show. She's going to be interviewing me, in some regard. And we’re going to have some good discussions. So to give you a little bit of background info on Casie. She lives in New Jersey. She’s a Jersey girl. She's a high school counselor, and she's getting married this coming October. Welcome to the show, Casie! Casie: Thank you for having me. I’m very excited. Cassy Joy: Oh good, I’m very excited to have you here, as well. That was just a very short introduction. But feel free to share a little bit more about yourself,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host today. And I am excited about today's episode. So I have one of those moments, a fangirl moment, when I got an e-mail a while ago. I have been reading this Skimm; this is not a sponsored endorsement, so know that. This is just a true honest review. I have been a consumer of the Skimm for a while. It's kind of a setup as the newsletter, you plug your e-mail in and they send you daily newsletters with kind of little bite sized pieces of information of what kind of news is going on. And I really like the way that they phrase things. They make it really interesting and easier to understand. And I like having one single source for a piece of some of the news. It's more of just a highlight reel versus a fact-finding exercise. Though they do link to really great articles. Anyway, so I have been a consumer of this Skimm articles for a very long time, and they reached out letting me know that they are currently doing a no excuses campaign on health care. And the idea behind this campaign is they really want to help educate folks on what really is the landscape of health care right now, particularly in the United States. It’s ever changing it's very confusing. And so they asked if I was interested in participating in the campaign, and I said absolutely. And I thought that a great way to participate would be to do a dedicated podcast episode. So today's show is about healthcare 101. So what I've done is I have combined some of my research with the research that the Skimm has put together over on their website. And I will link, of course, to all of their fabulous resources that are really entertaining, full of great graphics. Makes it really fun to read. But I’ve combined our two powers that we had at our disposal to put together what I think is a really good overview of health care. Not only a history on health insurance in the country, which I found pretty interesting.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of Fed and Fit podcast. I am really excited about today's episode. I am chatting with Shelly Kreuder, also known as Michelle Kreuder, who runs 2XL Premium Angus, LLC. It is a grass-fed beef ranch up in Iowa. And to give you guys some back story on how we invited Shelly onto the show today, Amber Link, who many of you already know, is a trusted member of my team. She’s the project manager for the Fed and Fit Project. She attended PaleoFx, and acted as my proxy, because I could not be there this year. And she got to meet Shelly. And she was really impressed by their story, how they decided to go from more conventional ranching and farming to 100% grass-fed beef. And so she thought it would be a really neat story to invite her to come on the show, share a little bit about how they made that transition, what went into the decision process, and what day to day life really looks like for the guys. So, welcome to the show, Shelly! I’m so excited to have you! Shelly Kreuder: I’m really glad to be here, Cassy. Cassy Joy: Yeah, this is a lot of fun. We really worked for this show today, so {laughs} I’m especially excited about it. It was one of those; I was trying to tell Shelly. The very first time I ever signed up for a podcast, I was being interviewed by my friend Liz Wolfe, and we weren’t close friends back then, but it took me a long time to figure out how to work Skype. I will always love that episode so much because I felt like we really earned it. {laughs} So, anyways. I’m excited to chat with you today, and I’m excited for you to share your story with the Fed and Fit listeners. If you wouldn't mind, tell folks a little bit more about who you are, what you do, and how you really came to be in the business that you guys are in today. Shelly Kreuder: Ok. Actually, we moved to Iowa back in 2006. We were originally from northwest Illinois, and we farmed conventionally there on my husband’s family farm that had been in the family for over 100 years.

Cassy Joy: And we're back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Thank you guys so much for dialing in this week, and maybe every week. I was recently listening to a podcast, and the host of the show gave a special shout out to anybody who was listening to episodes; and episode after episode, kind of Netflix style. So I want to hat-tip out to anybody, if anybody is out there listening to the show in that regard. Goodness. More power to you. That’s a lot of my voice in your ear {laughs}. And I am honored. So thank you so much for the privilege to chat with you guys every week. So, today we're going to talk about; you know, I have to be honest. Today’s show was supposed to be different. I was supposed to be {laughs} I was supposed to write an episode about the five pieces of advice to ignore. And while I still think that's a great episode idea, and I have lots of notes on it, when I was typing out my thoughts on that episode, another topic that is kind of a burr in my saddle right now kept coming out and I kept trying to fit that other thing into the five pieces of advice to ignore. So I said; “Forget it. I’m just going to do the show that I want to do.” And so today we're going to talk about something that is near and dear to my heart. And I'm not bringing it up; I was really hesitant to record this show, because I don't want any one person to feel bad, or to feel singled out, or anything in that regard when it comes to today's show. It's not that there are any; I’m not trying to shame anybody if they are doing this thing that we're going to talk about. I just want to shed light on an alternative way of going about life. Not going about life; that’s way too grand. But an alternative way of maybe communicating with other people. And I hope that it lightens the load. I hope that things become easier for folks. And overall, I hope this is just a casual inspiring solution for folks who may be looking for it. So, what we're going to talk about today is the difference between inspiring a person and convincing a person. Ok? Now these are two very distinct, very different concepts that have two very distinct,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit Project. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host for today and pretty much every day {laughs} here on the show. I am really excited about today's episode. We're going to be answering a question that I get quite a bit. And I’ve put it off for far too long. So today we're going to zero in on a really fun nutrition science topic. We’re going to talk about white rights versus brown rice. We’re going to hear the debate. Talk about whether it’s paleo or not. Talk about the anatomy of rice. Goodness, what else are we going to talk about? How white rice is made. Why is everyone all a sudden eating it, if you follow folks on social media. The nutritional benefits of white rice. And how to know if it’s right for you. So long term listeners may be excited. I know that you guys really like these more science-y episodes. So I'm really excited to jump into this with you. Ok, let’s go ahead and get started. First, let's talk about the anatomy of rice. I think it's important when we talk about anything nutrition science related that we get a pretty basic understanding of the general landscape. Right Whether that is, if you guys have a copy of my Fed and Fit book, which can be found at Barnes and Noble, all bookstores; what is it called? Books a Million. Of course, also on Amazon. It's available for Amazon prime. But if you have a copy of my book, and you happen to have read the first part of the book, I do a lot of background nutrition talking. You know, our basic biology. Because I think it's important. Thinking about, for example, the three phases of digestion. Before we talk about what goes on with food in our body and why are some foods great for us and other foods not so great for us, where has there been a misstep, what can we work at healing. Before we talk about that stuff, it’s a really good idea to just understand basic digestion. What happens in the body when we chew. When we eat. What goes on in our brain. What goes on in the three phases? So, in that same tone, I couldn't help but when I was writing notes for today's episode.
