Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia; I am your host. Welcome to our weekly 30-minute mindset, health, fitness, nutrition all that good stuff, we like to cover it all show. Today, bringing back an encore guest. I’m really excited about this. Her name is Brianna Battles. And if you caught episode number 126, you were first introduced to her there. She has a wealth of information. She’s a pregnancy and postpartum strength and conditioning coach with just a solid outlook when it comes to preparing our mindset for pregnancy and postpartum. One of my favorite quotes from the first podcast is a really good reminder that pregnancy is temporary, postpartum is forever. And to really make sure that we’re intentional about nurturing our bodies and making sure we’re set up for long-term success for the health of our selves and for our babies. So I’m really thrilled to welcome you back. We have so much more to cover, Brianna. Welcome to the show! Brianna Battles: Hey, thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited to be on here again. Cassy Joy: Absolutely. I’m excited to have you. And if you guys are sitting at your computers and just eager to Google right away, you can find her on the web at BriannaBattles.com. But today we’re going to cover a couple of different topics. Since posting that podcast, I think both Brianna and myself were reached out to by a bunch of folks who listened to the episode and just confirmed how much it resonated with them. And the story of how to really listen to our new body and what that really means. It’s not something that’s necessarily intuitive. And I really wanted to invite her back on so we could follow up on that conversation. Sort of a part two. So we’re going to talk about that today. I also went and saw my very first pelvic floor specialist. I’m running a couple of minutes behind, and it’s because I just got home from my appointment. So it’s really fresh. So I’ve been talking about pelvic health all day! {laughing} Brianna Battles: Oh boy! {laughs} Cassy Joy: Oh boy.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia; I am your host. I am so stinking excited about today’s episode. I have the distinct privilege of introducing you to the founder of one of my favorite; man, I just love what this company is up to. They’ve been a partner of mine for a while over here on the blog. I’m really excited for you guys to hear their story. Tell you a little bit of back story, and then I’m going to let him tell you in his own words Butcher Box. That’s who we invited on the show today. Founder, Mike Salguero ended up in someone’s living room picking out his very own $400 pile of meat from a cow share. Not just any cow share, either. 100% grass-fed cow. He was instantly hooked on the pure, natural taste, and was thrilled to discover the health advantages of grass-fed beef that they have over any other kind of ordinary grain-fed beef. Mike learned that not everyone has access to grass-fed beef, or their exposure is limited to products, like just ground beef. Currently only 1% of the total beef consumed in the United States is 100% grass-fed. And their goal over at Butcher Box is to make grass-fed beef; now and heritage breed pork and organic chicken, more accessible than ever. Butcher Box delivers 100% grass-fed beef, free-range, organic chicken, and heritage breed pork directly to your door. It comes directly to my door every month. And you can think of them as the neighborhood butcher for modern America. Welcome to the show, Mike! Mike Salguero: Thanks so much for having me. Cassy Joy: Oh my goodness, thank you for coming on. I really am geeking out. I’ve got some good questions for you. I know that grass-fed beef; it is a hot topic. And as people go into the New Year ready to really commit themselves to health and wellness and balance and trying to do better; know better and do better. I know this is coming up in conversations all over the place. So I’m excited for you to share a little bit about yourself. If you don’t mind, tell us a little bit more about yourself, of course. And then why you ventured to start Butcher Box. Mike Salguero: Sure, yeah. So I’m here in Boston, Massachusetts. Our office is in Cambridge in Harvard Square. And I’ve been working on this for two years.

Well first, it’s Christmas day, if you happening to be listening today. And if you are, I hope it’s because you’re traveling {laughs} and not hiding away from family reunion. My dad always says it’s not Christmas until somebody cries. What a great way to start off a podcast! {laughing} Today I brought one of my dearest friends and mentors in so many different capacities onto the show to talk about her latest project. She really doesn’t need an introduction, because I’m sure so many of you are familiar with her work. But today, we’re chatting with Diane Sanfilippo. She’s the owner and founder of Balanced Bites, a certified nutrition consultant, and the two-time New York Times’ bestselling author of Practical Paleo, the 21-Day Sugar Detox, and co-author of Mediterranean Paleo Cooking. Diane holds a BS from Syracuse University, and is certified in holistic nutrition from Bauman College; holistic lifestyle coaching from the Chek institute, and Poliquin biosignature modulation. She writes for her popular health blog, www.BalancedBites.com, and is a cohost of the top rated weekly health podcast, the Balanced Bites podcast. One of my favorite listens. Which is available for free from iTunes. In September 2016, Diane released an updated and expanded second edition of her runaway hit, Practical Paleo. Which has sold over half a million copies and spent a total of 97 weeks on the New York Times’ bestseller list. That is so incredible, every time I see that. On January 2nd, 2018, Diane will release the 21-Day Sugar Detox Daily Guide; a day by day handbook for her popular program, the 21-Day Sugar Detox, also known as #21DSD. Diane lives in San Francisco with her husband, Scott, and two fur kids. Welcome to the show, Diane! Diane Sanfilippo: Hi! Cassy Joy: {laughs} Hi. Diane Sanfilippo: Hi friend. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And I am so thrilled to bring you today’s episode. You guys have been asking for; so we’re having a baby. For those of you who don’t know. My husband and I are expecting the birth of our first baby this coming January. She’s due January 13th, which happens to be my grandfather’s birthday. Who knows if she’ll actually come on that day, but it gave me really warm fuzzies when I saw that date. So we have been researching constantly, trying to make sure. Because there’s a lot to get up to speed on when it comes to what kind of equipment do we need for this baby. What kind of medical decisions are we going to make. What kind of textiles do we want around the house. What kind of clothing do we want. What kind of crib? And the questions seem limitless. Something that I went on the hunt for was trying to find some resources that kind of helped summarize, aligned with my core values in terms of reducing total toxic load. Right? Especially for such a young person, an infant, a newborn. But also one that kind of took into consideration comfort of the baby and ease of the family. And I’m thrilled today to introduce you to a lady who has become a friend. Her name is Vera Brown. And she is the owner and creator of Real Life Baby. You can find her on the web at www.RealLifeBabyEcoShop.com. Don’t worry; of course we’re going to link up to all of that in the show notes. But I’m thrilled to invite her on the show today, because we’re going to hear a little bit about how she put together this incredible collection online. Why it’s important. Really what goes into her business. And I’ve really come to think of her as a trusted resource. So I hope that you guys find today’s episode helpful. I’m sure you will, and I’m sure that all of you moms out there and moms to be will love the website. Love the collection she’s put together. Welcome to the show, Vera! I’m so excited to have you today! Vera Brown: Oh my goodness, thank you so much Cassy for this wonderful introduction. It really is my pleasure, and it’s such an honor to be on your show. I’m a long-time listener and a follower, and I love everything that you are doing so I'm very glad that we can do this together and I can provide some value to your new baby. Cassy Joy: Oh, thank you. You're just; you guys, isn’t she the sweetest! I really adore you so much. I’m excited to jump in.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia, and I’m really excited to be back today with another listener reverse interview. These listener reverse interviews are such a treat for me. It’s when a Fed and Fit listener, or reader, writes in and asks a really good question via email. And instead of politely obliging them with an answer via email, I ask them if they’ll come on my podcast {laughs}. Normally, a lot of them are sweet enough to indulge me. So today we are chatting with one such person, her name is Jonnie. And she lives in New Orleans, Louisiana. A really neat town, and she works in fundraising for a community hospital there. Jonnie, so the way that these shows work is I’m going to pass the baton off over to her. It’s her show to ask me questions. I know that what we’re going to talk about is going to be of benefit to a lot of folks. So I’m really excited about it. Welcome to the show! Jonnie: Hi, thank you so much for having me. I’m excited. Cassy Joy: Yeah, I'm excited. The pleasure and the treat is mine. Well, tell us a little bit about yourself and then we can get to maybe some of your questions. Jonnie: Yeah, of course. I am based here in New Orleans, and I love it. I’ve been here for about 9 years. I’m originally from Arkansas. A really small town there. And I love everything about New Orleans. It’s people, it’s food, it’s atmosphere. And I do local fundraising here for a nonprofit hospital. Cassy Joy: Awesome. That sounds like such a fun, rewarding job. But I have to tell you; as soon as you said fundraising earlier before we started recording; I don’t know why this has stuck with me for however long it’s been since I was a sophomore in high school. I don’t want to do the math. {laughs} Jonnie: {laughs} Cassy Joy: But I had a Latin teacher who said “it’s fun-duh-raising!” Jonnie: {laughing} Cassy Joy: So it has nothing to do with the podcast, but that has stuck with me. And I just admire that job. I worked with PBS when I was growing up, and with the Girl Scouts. So it’s just such a neat thing that you do. That’s really cool. Jonnie: Thank you. I really love it. It is very rewarding, as you said. Cassy Joy: That’s wonderful. Well tell us a little bit about yourself, and maybe how that kind of plays into some of the questions y...

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. Thank you all for joining us today. I’m really excited to bring you today’s interview. We are talking with Angela Mavridis of Tribali foods. She is just such a bright, bubbly, inspiring person who has created a tremendous product. And when I first heard about this product, I was so excited. I could not wait to try it. My friend Diane Sanfilippo originally told me about it. She leads this movement, Tribali foods, their first food products that they’ve come out with are these frozen burger patties. I’m going to tell you all about them. Why she created them, what thoughtful sourcing has gone into the ingredients, how easy they are to make from home. All these wonderful things. But as a nutrition consultant, as a person who has lived this cleaner, trying to fuel my body with the best kinds of foods lifestyle for so long, there has been such a need for really clean, really easy to use, accessible proteins made responsibly. And I’m so thrilled to introduce you today to a lady who is accomplishing that, and she’s doing it so well. Welcome to the show, Angela! Angela Mavridis: Hi, thank you for having me. Cassy Joy: Thank you for coming on! I gave a very brief introduction. You know yourself better {laughs} so would you mind telling us a little bit more about yourself. And then we’ll jump into maybe some of the story of what initially inspired you to create Tribali. Angela Mavridis: Yeah, sure. So, my journey into health and nutrition was one that I call from paleo to confusion and then back again. And that’s because; I was born in Greece and lived there until I was about 6. And then subsequently spent every single summer until I was well into my teens with grandma just eating wholesome real food off the land and the sea. We lived at this beach house right by the water. Right by a fishing village. And every summer; I would spend literally three summers out of the year. Every summer I just felt like the food I was eating just made my body thrive in such a nice way. It could have been also the great vitamin D from the sun exposure. Or the 6 hours of swimming in the ocean.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. I’m really excited to bring you today’s episode. Every once in a while, we like to dive into a really geeky topic, and today’s episode is no except. If you're a new listener here, welcome to the show. It is a 30-minute nutrition, mindset, overall healthy lifestyle focused show. We publish every Monday, and I’m just thrilled to have you here. So when we jump into some of these geekier episodes, I really try to do my best to make sure that I’m boiling down some of these bigger nutrition and scientific topics into really easy, digestible pieces of information; no pun intended! Or pun intended, I’ll take that credit. So today we’re going to talk about wild seafood. So the name of the show is wild seafood 101. It’s a question I get a lot. Just like I did a podcast episode many moons ago; it’s up there if you want to look for it. But it’s about the importance of grass-fed beef. And the difference between that and conventional beef; what’s the actual difference? So today we’re talking in the same vein. What is the real importance of wild seafood? Why does it matter? Is it just another buzzword? You know, gluten free seems to be a big buzzword lately. Are these gluten free crackers actually healthier for me than another cracker? So what I’m trying to do with the show and some of these especially science-y episodes, is to give you some tools to where you can better navigate and make decisions for yourself and your family. Alrighty! Knowledge is power, right? So let’s jump in and get some knowledge nuggets. Ok, so we’re going to talk about why wild is important. We’re going to talk about why it’s important for our health. What seafood actually does for our health in general. Whether it’s sourced from a wild or a farmed capacity. And then we’re also going to talk about the sustainability piece of the equation. What does that even mean? What is sustainable seafood?

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host for the show; for today’s show and all the shows here {laughs}. Fed and Fit podcast is a weekly, 30-minute, mindset, food, fitness, nutrition, all those good things. All those good topics kind of show. And today we are zeroing in on really, overall mindset. But we’re going to touch on food. We’re going to touch on nutrition. We’re going to touch on fitness. And then circle back around to mindset. So what we’re going to talk about today specifically is all about having a healthy mindset for the holidays. This can be a really tricky time period. We roll into the holidays thinking; well, it goes both ways. Maybe three ways. {laughs} Some people approach the holidays, and they think; “ok. Let’s go ahead and take that healthy hat off that I’ve strapped on all year long. We’re going to sit back. We’re going to enjoy the holidays. It will be what it will be. And then come January, we’ll do damage control.” That’s one approach, and I’m not going to say that I haven’t been in that driver’s seat before. Another approach is, we go into the holidays and we think, “Oh, I’ve got my healthy hat strapped on real tight. And I’m just going to keep trucking through. We’re going to have ourselves a healthy, healthy, healthy holiday. And nothing’s going to get in my way.” And then your grandmother makes a piece of pumpkin pie, puts it in front of you, and says, “But I made this for you. It’s your favorite.” And then you eat it, and you feel like your whole plan went out the window. You feel like somebody ripped that healthy hat off your head and threw it away. Now you don’t quite know what to do with yourself. You don’t know; either guilt is introduced. All kinds of ugly, yucky feelings. So that’s one way. And then I would say a third way is; “Well, I never wore a healthy hat so why start now?” {laughs}. You know. It’s the folks who, maybe they haven’t ever really tried to be super conscious about having a healthy holiday and the year prior wasn’t necessarily one where they were focused on a healthy mindset, or nutrition, or fitness, or anything like that. So they look at the holidays, and they think; “why start now? I’ll start that in January when pumpkin pie season is over.”

I want to give people something a little more unconventional. A little more practical. If you're listening to this, and you're thinking; I just want to find a way to harness a little more joy. Maybe stay on the upper cut of just having a good day. Right? At the end of the day, we all know here that that’s our choice. How we feel about the day. And at the end of the day, how we respond to things that happen to us. In a lot of ways, we do have a lot of control. That doesn’t mean that our natural emotions don’t have a place. They absolutely have a place, and it’s important to acknowledge those. But there are things that we can do. If you find yourself just kind of in a rut, right? Maybe you're uninspired or you're just finding it really easy to be offended by certain things or people in your life. Goodness; things are just getting to you more than you really feel like they would in certain circumstances. Maybe we’re just due to shake things up, right? So that’s what today’s episode is all about, is to really help you shake things up a little bit. Maybe dust out some corners that we hadn’t thought about in a while. And hopefully what ends up is a little more joy in the day. A little more freshness, you know. An obvious thing that I’m not going to share would be like go out and buy yourself a new pair of stretchy pants; workout pants. I’m not going to give you that kind of advice today. But you know that feeling when you come home with a new pair of tennis sh...

My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host. This is a weekly, 30-minute mindset, health, food, all those good things show. And I’m really excited today to bring you another reverse interview. And a reverse interview is where I invite a Fed and Fit listener or reader to come onto the show to ask some questions that maybe they wrote in to ask them directly over a conversation, so we can have a nice chat. Hopefully other folks can benefit from the conversation. So today I am welcoming Amanda to the show. She lives in Jacksonville, Florida. She works at an ad agency, and she has two small kids. Welcome to the show, Amanda! Amanda: Thanks, Cassy! Really, really excited. Cassy Joy: Oh, I’m happy to have you here. This is going to be so fun. Feel free to tell folks a little bit more about yourself, and maybe a little background information before we lead into your question. And then really, the show is yours! Amanda: Ok, awesome. So like Cassy said, my name is Amanda. And I live in Jacksonville. My husband is in the military, so we move around kind of a lot. I have two small kids. I also work at an advertising agency, so I am definitely busy, busy, busy all the time. Always running around after my little ones. So I emailed Cassy originally because I have; first of all I have celiac. So I found that out about probably 6 or 7 years ago now. So I’ve always had stomach issues from starting in middle school, probably. And no doctor ever took the time to really figure out what was wrong with me until I got a new doctor. That doctor referred me to a GI doctor, which is the person that found out that I had celiac. So I stopped eating gluten, and my stomach issues, essentially went away. But now, I’m having this issue where now sometimes when I eat I get like an empty burning sensation in the pit of my stomach. And I know that I haven’t eaten any gluten leading up, because I will have made all of my food leading up to that. So I know that it’s not gluten that’s hurting me. And my stomach gets kind of bubbly and I just don’t know if maybe my stomach needs some healing or w...

I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. Owner, author, nutritionist, all those good things, blogger, podcaster behind the brand Fed and Fit. And today, we’re back with another reader reverse interview. And for the hundredth time; I apologize to longtime listeners. But I’m going to explain briefly what a reverse interview is. A Fed and Fit listener/reader will write in with a great question, and instead of obliging them via email, I invite them to come on the show to ask their questions so we can have a nice little dialogue with the hopes that somebody out there can also benefit from the conversation. So today, I’m welcoming Brigid onto the show. She lives in a small town in Alabama where she is a research assistant. Welcome to the show! Brigid: Thank you Cassy! I am super excited to be here. And I’m just super pumped to jump into these questions. Cassy Joy: Yeah, me too! I know you’ve got a list of them. So let’s get after it. Feel free to tell folks a little bit about yourself if you want beforehand so they kind of know where you're coming from. And I’d love to dive into a little bit deeper conversation. Brigid: Yeah, of course. So, I’m originally from Virginia. I went to Virginia Tech; go Hokies! {laughs} And I basically, my senior year of college I was really struggling with the food that I was trying to eat. I thought that I was eating healthy during the week. I was in a weight training class. And then on the weekends, I just; you know, what every typical college student does. Just drank way too much, and ate way too much. It was honestly making me feel horrible. I thought that it was normal for my stomach to hurt, like 24/7. Basically after every single meal. Once I graduated and got a job, and kind of had to learn to cook for myself, and do things pretty much independently, I decided that that lifestyle was over with, and I needed to figure out kind of what was causing my stomach issues...

Ep. 127: Are gluten-free grains right for you? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:01

I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today is another wonderful reverse interview with the lovely Fed and Fit listener. And if you're unfamiliar; if you're new here, with the reverse interview concept, it’s pretty simple. Fed and Fit listeners and readers write in with really great questions, and when I get an especially good question, instead of responding to their email the way that they’ve asked, or however they’ve contacted me. I’ll ask them if they’ll come on the show so we can chat about it, in the hopes that maybe it helps other folks. So today I’m joined by Elena. She lives in Brooklyn, and she works in communications. She’s also applying for nursing school. Welcome to the show, Elena! Elena: Hi! Thank you so much. I’m very excited to be on this podcast. Cassy Joy: Yay! I’m very excited to have you. Well if you don’t mind telling folks a little bit more about yourself. Your background, and what you wanted to chat about today. Elena: Yeah, absolutely. So I guess in terms of my background and why I contacted you. I have had eczema my whole life, and I’ve also had IBS for most of it, as well. And for the whole time, I’ve had doctors be like, “Your skin has nothing to do with what you eat. We’ll just give you some steroid creams. Take antihistamines, and that will help.” But it has never really helped. And the same thing with the IBS stuff. They’re like, “Well you don’t have celiac, and you don’t have Crohn’s, so just eat a high fiber diet and that will fix it.” But it didn’t, as you will probably not be shocked to know. And so recently I sort of stumbled into; I started reading Practical Paleo, and found this whole scene of wonderful people who have provided so much educational information. And I also found an integrative doctor that I started going to. So I have been doing a low FODMAP paleo-ish diet. And my skin got so much better, it was amazing. It wasn’t perfect, and my doctor was still like,
