Ep. 34: The Fed+Fit College Student: Part 2 This is the Fed and Fit podcast starting your week off with motivational thoughts on real food and fun fitness activities with Cassy Joy Garcia and co-host, Charissa Talbot. Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. Today we’re going to talk about the Fed and Fit college student hydration plan, tips to navigating the alcohol scene, and how to have a healthy relationship with caffeine. Cassy Joy: And we’re back! Today I’m joined once again by my lovely sister, Samantha Garcia. Hey Sam! Samantha Garcia: Hello! Cassy Joy: {laughs} I think today we might have a little bit better audio quality. Sam and I are working out some kinks, but we’re getting there. Samantha Garcia: Ye-haw! Cassy Joy: Ye-haw! So we’re excited about today’s episode. If you caught last weeks’ episode, which was number 33 of the Fed and Fit podcast, we launched a series called the Fed and Fit college student. And this is going to be a mini-series, 5-6 episodes that we’re doing that, while it’s directed at providing the information that will empower somebody that is either entering college or somebody that is going through any kind of a big transition in their life. Providing them with the information that they might need to make it as seamless and healthy as possible. So we’ve broke all of that out; we’ve got some fun facts and fun information for you guys, and I hope, even if you may not be going to college, or you don’t have someone near and dear to you that is in that part of their life, you are able to get something out of today’s episode. Sam and I, while we’ve been writing the content out, we’ve been going through memories and having some self discovery, so I think we’ve got a good show ahead. So today we’re going to talk about, leading into part 2 of this mini-series, we’re going to talk about all the liquids. {laughs} Samantha Garcia: {laughs} Cassy Joy: We’re going to talk about, while part 1 we decided was priority number 1 in terms of the pillars of health is sleep, and that’s something that we talk about a lot in the Fed and Fit project. But priority number 1 being sleep, and we talked all about the reasons why, how to get better sleep, and what it can really do for you in your college career, in your professional career, in your life in general and your health overall. Today we’re turning our attention to water. We’re going to talk about hydration and what that really means. And because they’re so closely associated, we’re going to expand the water conversation and talk about a couple of other liquids to include caffeine and alcohol. And this is an especially interesting topic when you’re talking to college students, because caffeine and alcohol tend to be the focus more so than regular water. So we’re going to address those, and we’re going to talk briefly about them and just realistically sort of just lay out the facts for you, what caffeine really does to your body,

Cassy Joy: {laughs} And we hope you can hear us ok. We’re trying a slightly different audio system. I wanted to bring Samantha on for a number of reasons; I’ll get to those in a second. A little bit of housekeeping first. I wanted to let all of you guys know that if you are having trouble accessing the older podcast episodes, those are now available. I received an email from a listener saying they wanted to go back and listen, and I had no idea that not all of the previous episodes were still loaded on iTunes! So we’ve gotten that fixed, so you are more than welcome to scroll back and listen to all of those straight from your podcast app on your phone! So there’s that. Second piece of housekeeping, is that the enrollment in the September project is now open. I know a lot of you wanted to jump in in August, and it was a little bit late. So now is the time, you can log onto FedandFit.com, and go on the top menu bar, all the way to the right, there’s a tab called the project. Click on that, and it will take you right to the page with more information. We are accepting, once again like last time, there are 5 spots available with one on one coaching with your truly, I am doing the coaching for these first couple of ones. That means that you get me on the phone for 30 minutes once a week during the 4 weeks. So, anyways, that’s available. I would love to have you. And I think that’s about it. 1.

 Ep. 29: Paleo on the Road with Kimberly Dunn | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:25

Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." Episode 29 Topics: Welcome Cassy Joy's sister, Kimberly Dunn! [1:39] Foods to prepare for the road [9:09] Food to buy when traveling [17:27] Navigating a menu and tips on ordering [20:46] Convenience store options [33:18] We would LOVE some feedback, so feel free to leave a review in iTunes, comment below, or even give us a shout on social media! Some more of Kimberly Dunn's tips for traveling: How to keep things cool: Yeti!!! Love the Yeti, but if you're looking for more variety in colors check out the Orca's!. They do the same kinda job as the Yeti!!Both Orca and Yeti make a portable soft side cooler that are amazing for travel. They're an investment, but think about how much money you'll save by eating in out on the road with your prepared goods! http://www.shoporca.com/default.asp http://yeticoolers.com/ Fitness: I always have a hard time working out on show days. It's not always easy to get to a shower after a work out in a parking lot so here are my three options for working out on the road. Find the nearest gym, maybe you have a membership with them, maybe you don't. I have found that when traveling most gyms will either charge you a day rate or give just let you come on in and give there facilities a try! You can even take a shower if need be. There was an Anytime fitness right down the road in Stephenville Texas and my band and I were looking for a place to get out of the hot Summer sun and work out. Anytime took us in and we had a great work out. It depends on the staff at the gym location, I would stick to Anytimes, Golds, 24 Hours, or Planet Fitness.  Yoga: You can practice near anywhere! I've done it in parking lots, parks, venues, during load in, sounds check. Yoga is a great go to on the road. You can make the intensity what ever you like, so if there isn't a shower near by don't go so hard :)  Daily WOD: This is my main go to. It's fast, tough, and easy all at the same time. For 5 times repeat these below:          40: jumping jacks (for higher intensity squat jacks)          30: squats (for higher intensity hold your medium weight travel bag, for me this is my back pack)          20: sit ups or crunches (Mix it up to keep it interesting)          10: push-ups REPEAT 5 times :) you'll be feeling good, and you can get that beer at the bar that has been calling your name all afternoon! Snacking: Sitting a in a van or car for hours on end make it pretty boring at times. Even if the conversations are flowing my natural go to is to snack. It's so so easy to do. SO I have a couple of options to help curve the urge. WATER: Drink water, water, water. By having something to hold and consume you're giving yourself something to do with your interesting conversation about the pot holes in the road. ICE BERG Lettuce: this was a trick I learned from a touring buddy from the rock band FlyLeaf. Ice Burg lettuce allows you to chew on something and again gives your body something to do while you talk about the number of cows vs calfs in the field yonder way. Carrots: eating carrots and hummus are a tasty snack. And believe me after 10 baby carrots you'll want to throw the bag out the window because you jaw has been not only chewing forever but talking about that new Taylor Swift song that you just can't figure out what it's about.

It’s tough to watch the calendar tick by. I’m in a slightly different mindset, because I want it to tick by faster almost. Charissa Talbot: Right. Cassy Joy: Because I want to be married! Charissa Talbot: Yep. 1. Cassy’s News Real [2:09] Cassy Joy: I want to marry my best friend. And that’s going to happen this October. Which takes me right into today’s news real. Together, they’ve authored four books, the most recent was Make it Paleo II. They run a fabulous food blog that allows others in the Paleo world to contribute, they have an app, cookie dough that you can purchase through Cappellos, and, really what I admire most, they have found a way to juggle such great successes with a tremendous amount of grace. They post regular peeks into their real life via Instagram, which constantly works to inspire and provide support to people looking to pursue a healthier and tastier lifestyle. It seems like they’ve never met a stranger, and are truly welcoming to all who cross their paths! So, if you can’t tell, I’m a big fan and I’m so thrilled to have you guys on the show today. Cassy Joy: Aww! I love writing them. I really think that’s one of my favorite parts of having a podcast, when I get to invite people I really care about on, I get to write them a little intro. {laughs} Bill Staley: Well thanks for having us, we’re so excited to be here. Everything you do, I’ve admired, and I’m so excited to tell folks what you're up to right now. Just to cover our introduction bases, I’d love for you guys to tell listeners; rewind the clock, I know it was a while ago, but what originally brought you to a paleo lifestyle. And you can get as detailed as you want to or not. And then what first inspired you to be content creators in this field, to start a blog and start putting some stuff out. Haley Staley: Yeah, so I was doing paleo first before I met Bill, and I had really struggled with my weight for a long time, like ever since middle school. When I came upon paleo, it was the first thing that I had ever done that really worked. I was sort of able to heal my relationship with food through that. When I met Bill, I told him about it, and he was really the first guy,

Today we’re going to talk about the evolution of beauty standards, what true beauty really means today, some post workout meal ideas, and another no equipment body weight exercise that you can do anywhere. 1. Fed and Fit: what’s in-season and group classes [32:30] 7. Fit: Bodyweight exercise [35:49] Cassy Joy: Good morning everybody! Cassy and Charissa back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Good morning Charissa! Charissa Talbot: Good morning Cassy. Cassy Joy: So, today we have decided we’re switching a couple of things up. Instead of Girl Chat, we’re going to call it the News Real. How do you feel about that? Charissa Talbot: I love it. It’s our newsreel. Cassy Joy: It is. Charissa Talbot: Stuff we want to talk about. And I feel like it opens us up to a few things I want to talk about today, too, so I think it’s kind of cool. I like the News Real. We’ll try it out. Let us know if you guys like it. Cassy Joy: Yeah. Let us know if you like it. We’ve been reading your reviews in iTunes, really appreciate them all. We’ve been lucky so far, you guys have given us all 5 stars; we’re so flattered! That’s so nice. Charissa Talbot: Amazing! So nice, thank you guys. 1. Cassy’s News Real [1:50] Cassy Joy: So nice. But we’re taking your feedback and we’re going to keep incorporating that. So keep those reviews coming. So today on my newsreel, I’ve got my top 3. Number one, the podcasts are now transcribed, you guys! So if you are driving or listening while you wash the dishes, and you hear something that you like or you want to go back and reread, you don’t have to listen to the whole episode all over again. You can just pull up the show notes and scroll to the bottom for the complete transcription. I hope you really enjoy that. I think the lady who is doing out transcriptions is really talented, so I think you’ll enjoy that. Number 2; I’m going to start posting more recipes on social media, so watch out for those. And feel free to share them if you like. When I first started out as a blogger, we only posted recipes on our blogs. There was not an Instagram, and Facebook was very different than it is now, and I’ve just realized that I can reach more of you guys with these health recipes by posting them on social media. And at the end of the day, I just want to help as many people as possible eat better. If they happen to eventually land on my websit...

Wait, you’re in my car right now? Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Cassy Joy: In case anyone is wondering, Charissa is hands free, because she’s driving and I’m holding the phone. Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Cassy Joy: The official title of this episode is, that one time we forgot to record an episode. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Because we were actually together, and enjoying ourselves, and having a good time. I’m sure everyone can understand. So I drove up to San Antonio today to come to Cassy’s engagement party. We both had such a crazy week, we’re like, we’ll just record a podcast while we’re there together, and one thing leads to another, and here we are driving on the way to dinner. We have reservations, we can’t be late, but we’re squeezing this one in! Cassy Joy: We are. We honor our commitments! Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Cassy Joy: I’m like a dog with a bone with a schedule. It may not be exactly what we were going to talk about, but we can save that for the next one and at least we’re dropping by to say hi. Charissa Talbot: Yes. Cassy Joy: It’s been a crazy week. Austin and I just threw an engagement/house warming party at our casa, and it was a good time. We had all kinds of yummy, tasty, paleo foods, and I tried some new recipes on my friends and family. They’re the guinea pigs, just so you guys know. Charissa Talbot: Oh my gosh, that pudding! The toffee and the chocolate? Oh my god. Cassy Joy: The pudding. I was pretty excited about the pudding. I kept going back to test it to make sure it was still good, Charissa Talbot: Yeah, I had to eat the whole, you know. Yeah, I did a lot of testing today. Cassy Joy: In case you’re wondering, it’s a chocolate pudding, a dark chocolate pudding with a pistachio toffee on top. Charissa Talbot: Mm-mmm. It was so good. Cassy Joy: It was yummy. Charissa Talbot: And Cassy made her sangria recipe from the blog. Oh my gosh, it was amazing. Cassy Joy: It was good. It’s one of my favorites. It’s a sparkling peach sangria, and we’ll link to it in the show notes but you should definitely look it up...

Ep. 24: From Idea to Reality: a 5-step process This is the Fed and Fit podcast starting your week off with motivational thoughts on real food and fun fitness activities with Cassy Joy Garcia and co-host, Charissa Talbot. Remember our disclaimer; the information and opinions shared in this podcast are solely those of any given individual, and not a substitute for medical advice. Here are the ladies. On the episode of the Fed and Fit podcast, we talk about how to turn ideas into reality via our 5 step process, the foods that are in season right now, and ideas on budget friendly outdoor workouts. Cassy Joy: Good morning Charissa! Charissa Talbot: Good morning! And it actually is morning. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: Sometimes we record, and it’s not the morning. But I’m drinking coffee, its morning time. Cassy Joy: I have an empty coffee cup sitting next to me, I’m kind of wishing it had more in it. Charissa Talbot: That’s kind of sad. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yeah. I’m glad to have you back; I want to hear all about your vacation and Martha’s Vineyard. I saw some photos and it just looked beautiful. Charissa Talbot: It was very picturesque. Very, very nice. I had an interesting, I had a rough start to my vacation. You know I really needed the break and to relax, and I had a couple of flight changes I had to make, and each flight I was on, one had maintenance issues, and another one got stuck on the runway for a long period of time, so instead of being able to walk from one plane change to the other, all day long I was on a plane, and then running. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Charissa Talbot: On a plane, and then running, and then on a plane. And then when I got to Martha’s Vineyard, they had left my luggage in New York City. So I didn’t get my luggage until the next day at like 4 o'clock, which was a little rough. But I will say, having a good attitude and being friendly and happy goes a long way. The flight attendant at the airport was so pleasant, and you could tell she was having a rough day, and I was just patient and kind and nice, and it paid off. She made sure I got my bag, and when I came back to get on my flight home, she asked me to save my receipts from stuff I needed to buy, because of course I didn’t have anything with me. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. Charissa Talbot: And she went ahead and just put in my refund, and I’m going to be getting a check in a couple of days, so. I don’t know, it just, you know there are some people that are just so, you see them in the airport, they’re really stressed out, and they’re frustrated, and they’re snappy, and it’s like, it doesn’t serve you or the people around you or your purpose or your goal. Everything is going to be what it’s going to be, just relax people. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Yeah! Charissa Talbot: And be kind. Because being a flight attendant or working behind the counter or any of those jobs, it’s very taxing and I can’t imagine. Ugh, man those girls, they go through a lot. And boys. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. Charissa Talbot: So just be nice. Everyone, just be nice.

Struggling with optimism [23:23] Cassy Joy: Today on the podcast, I’m so thrilled for this 23rd episode to have a friend of mine join me today while Charissa is on vacation. Today I’m introducing you guys to Mary, AKA the Paleo Chef, AKA Mer. She is a tremendous chef and lifestyle coach. She is the creative force behind http://paleochef.com/, phat fudge, that’s P-H-A-T in case you were wondering {laughs}, which may be available for order, I’ll let her tell you more about that in a little bit, and the 5-day guide, Eat, Play, Crush. This is really one of those interviews where I personally identify with our topic so much so that I’m just going to put it out there, and I know you guys will get something from it. I came to know Mary a few years back at PaleoFx. I was just telling her about this, how I remembered meeting her. We were sitting down, there was a group of us at Lamberts in Austin, and we were going to have barbecue on the patio. And I distinctly remember this waiter walking up, and he was like, “hey guys! Can I tell you about the special today?” And she took the reins immediately, and she was like, ok, here’s the thing. We’re all following a grain-free lifestyle, so tell what’s on your menu that you can actually eat. Oh me? I’ll have a bourbon meat. {laughs} Mary Shenouda: {laughs} Cassy Joy: In very few words, she won my heart. She is a lady who cuts the crap, really gets real, and she’s always provided some meaningful feedback and inspiration. She reached out a few months back when I was caught in the should or shouldn’t I’s of launching the Fed and Fit project, and she literally lit the fire under my backside to push me into motion. She gave me a schedule, and it wouldn’t have happened without her. So I wanted to bring her on the show today so that one, you could meet this wonderful woman, and two, she can share a little bit about her magic. Mary, I’m so excited to have you! 1. Introducing our guest, Mary Shenouda [2:45] Mary Shenouda: Thank you! Thank you for saying I lit a fire, I’ve always wanted to be a magician. A little fire starter. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Mission accomplished. I told everybody that. They were like, wow, it’s like you just woke up one day and you decided to start doing this. I was like, well my friend Mary asked me for a deliverable schedule and I really don’t want to disappoint her. {laughing}

I was fully prepared to have to wing it so you could start on your vacation a little bit early. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: It’s totally fine. Totally fine. Cassy Joy: That’s great. Charissa, for those of you who don’t know why she is so le’ pooped, just finished, if you saw that autoimmune wellness bundle, she was the little Oz behind the curtain that was helping to keep all the engines running constantly during that really intense 5 days. Charissa Talbot: Yeah. Cassy Joy: Thank you for all of your hard work. Charissa Talbot: Aw, thanks. Yeah I got really good feedback from everybody, and we did really well and a lot of people are going to have so much information now in one place to really help them get started, you know for those who have to look at the possibility of them getting a little more strict with their eating to help them heal a little bit faster. It’s good. It’s all over really positive, and it was a really god experience. Now I know. The thing is, when you go through something, whatever it may be, you’re always learning, you know? Whether it be a relationship, a friendship, a work project, an event. Whatever it is, whatever you’re doing, you just kind of have to be grateful for the opportunity to figure out how to do it better if you decide it’s something that you want to do again. I’m feeling super, super grateful about the whole experience, but I’m just a little tired. {laughs} Cassy Joy: That’s really sweet. That’s a great perspective, and it definitely plays true to your character.

I started everything from seeds, and if you’re a first time listener, this past spring I decided, I live in suburbia of San Antonio, and Austin, my fiancé, built me 3 raised beds that are, what are they, 4 x 8 each. So they’re pretty good sized, and we filled them with organic soil and I sprouted seeds, I was so excited, and things are doing really well. My spaghetti squash is enormous. I have a cabbage patch full of kale and collards, and I have a nightshade patch, which is something that probably only a nutritionist would think about. {laughs} Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Right.
