 I am Vault Dweller – Fallout 1 – TNP007 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:21

Alright Wastelanders, we have arrived. We are finally stepping out of Vault 13 into the Wastes of Southern California. This is the game that started it all. It was released on 30 September 1997 and was developed by Black Isle Studios, a division of Interplay. It’s often been said that Fallout 1 was the spiritual successor to Wasteland, put out in 2987 by interplay. To be fair, though, wasteland got an actual sequel in 2015 with the crowd funded Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut.  The Divergence – TNP005 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:57

So here we are people, right on the precipice of the Fallout universe…finally. Talking about Fallout 1 is right over the next hill, however, I thought we needed to talk a little bit about some of Fallout’s possible divergences from our own time lime.  Prelude to Fallout, Part 3 – TNP004 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:10

In this last episode before we actually get into the Fallout Universe, we wanted to spend a little time talking about nuclear technology. It seems that after World War 2, instead of focusing a lot of energy into miniaturizing their tech as we did in real life with the advent of the transistor, the Fallout Universe seems to have shifted their focus on nuclear tech. That’s not to say that they did nothing in the way of miniaturizing, they did, but we see so much tech in the Fallout Universe that harnesses the power of the atom. In this episode, we’re going to talk a little bit about how nuclear fission works, and talk about some nuclear tech in and out of game.  Prelude to Fallout, Part 2 – TNP003 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:24

Last episode we talked about the political situation in Post-WW2 China, the USSR, and the United States. However, much of the pop-culture from that era also shaped the Fallout universe. After the detonation of the Trinity bomb in 1945 ushered the world into the Atomic Age. Depending on who you ask, we’re still in the Atomic Age today, but others say that it ended in 1991 with the fall of the USSR. In any case, US culture went pretty much all in on the Atom, where it permeated toys, movies, TV, and comics, among other things.  Prelude to Fallout, Part 1 – TNP002 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:21

Any serious look into the backstory and lore of the Fallout Universe has to at least include a dive into the real world post-WW2 political climate of the United States, the USSR, and China, as well as the science fiction and the whole “World of Tomorrow” aesthetic that was popular in the 1950s. On this week’s episode, we’re going to mainly focus on the politics of the era, because it basically helps set up the Fallout universe and frames pretty much the entire franchise.
