This is the second in a series of episodes of Movember Radio raising awareness in the lead up to World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th with the powerful message of “Men, let’s talk when things get tough”. We talk to Mo Bro Allan Sparkes CV, a decorated police officer and one of only five Australian heroes to be awarded the highest bravery decoration, the Cross of Valour. Through Al’s service he developed chronic post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated chronic depression and became suicidal. He spent a lot of time recovering from these illnesses. Al has been an ambassador for beyondblue and Soldier On for the past three years and regularly speaks about suicide and mental health. His Twitter handle is @allansparkes.

In this episode of Movember Radio, we chat to Kieran Ryan, a passionate Mo Bro from Stawell, Australia who first got involved with Movember in 2009 when he was 21 years old, after losing two close mates to suicide. Kieran has been a champion for men’s health, running 100km for Movember back in 2012 and his team helped raise more than $50,000 over seven years. Kieran then went on to trek the Kokoda Trail with Mo Bro Ambassador and Paralympian Kurt Fearnley for the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC Day in 2014. Kieran now works for the Movember Foundation development team.

In this episode of Movember Radio, we chat to Andy Puddicombe, a meditation and mindfulness expert and founder of the hugely popular mindfulness app “Headspace”. In 2013, Andy was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Mindfulness has helped him to cope with the physical, emotional and mental impact of the illness. Prior to this, Andy undertook a ten-year journey, which took him around the world, culminating with ordination as a Tibetan Buddhist monk in Northern India.

In this episode of Movember Radio, we chat to Jonny Imerman, the founder of Imerman Angels and a testicular cancer survivor who was diagnosed at the age of 26. Jonny talks openly about the challenges he faced going through surgery and chemotherapy and the support he received on his journey from family and friends, but never met anyone his age that was a cancer survivor. He decided to set up Imerman Angels to introduce each cancer fighter to one survivor who can inspire them to know that they can overcome their cancer.

In this episode of Movember Radio, we chat to Sam Gledhill, Testicular Cancer Programs Lead at the Movember Foundation. Sam explains why its important for every bloke to getting to know what’s normal for your nuts as part of the “Know thy nuts” campaign by the Movember Foundation for testicular cancer awareness month in April. Early detection is key as testicular cancer is a highly treatable disease. Sam also shares the progress of testicular cancer programs funded by the Foundation.

In this episode of Movember Radio, we chat to Niiobli Armah IV, Program Manager at Prevention Institute in the U.S on promoting mental health and wellbeing. Niiobli also works with the Movember Foundation team on the groundbreaking new initiative called “Making Connections”. This will develop and implement actionable, community-level prevention plans to improve mental health for men and boys. Niiobli hopes to encourage more positive notions of masculinity in the community and effectively utilize social connectedness as a preventative measure to decrease the risk of suicide in men.

In this episode of Movember Radio, we chat to Jonny Benjamin - a mental health campaigner who spends his life visiting schools, universities, prisons, hospitals and corporations talking about his experience. In 2008, Jonny was about to jump off a bridge over the river Thames before a stranger stepped in and talked him back from the brink. This experience led to a personal transformation for Jonny and a television documentary about that moment which has been viewed by 300 million people online. Jonny now works to inspire people with the message that mental health problems can get better.
