107 Degrees - Maura Murray
Summary: We discuss the disappearance of Maura Murray, a 21 year old nursing student from Hanson, MA that left the UMass Amherst campus on February 9th, 2004 and was last seen that evening on Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire.
This is a short addendum to the fourth episode and it addresses two points. The first pertains to the response I received from the NH State Police regarding James Renner’s claim that “the police think she was pregnant” on Episode 2 of "The Disappearance of Maura Murrray" series on Oxygen. The second addresses another question I reached out to law enforcement about, which is whether Renner’s claim that Maura was about to be cited for Reckless Operation before she disappeared is true. The short answer to both questions is “No.” These distinctions are very important. Over the years, the sum total of all these instances of little fibs, warped truths, and exaggerated claims (often based on rumors and/or questionable sources) has painted a picture that in no way resembles the truth. I felt that there was no harm in providing some clarification.
Erinn and Ethan discuss Episode 2 of the Oxygen series, “The Disappearance of Maura Murray.” Topics include the interview with Erin, a fellow nursing student that Maura had borrowed scrubs from before she disappeared; evidence that Maura was pregnant; the state of Maura’s dorm room; James Renner’s “lighthouse” theory described in Episode 2; and finally, Maura’s best friend Kate and her boyfriend Bill. This episode discusses the civil suit that Fred Murray filed against the “state” of NH after the police refused to release any of the documents they had in their possession pertaining to Maura’s disappearance. Erinn and Ethan are joined by an attorney and a public defender in Brooklyn, NY, who began her career as a public defender in New Hampshire. I felt that she was the perfect person to help provide context and guide us through some of the legalese in the transcripts and the affidavits provided by Nancy Smith, Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin, and Detective Todd Landry. You can find the documents referenced in this video at the107degree.com. Ethan and I discuss the conflicting statements by the Haverhill Police Department and the NH State Police regarding what alcohol was recovered from Maura's car. I offer my theory for why there could be conflicting accounts. We also discuss the timeline and a local officer in Grafton Count, Cpl. Bruce McKay. Ethan and I discuss discrepancies in the heights between the two BOLOs put out on February 9th and 10th and whether it may suggest that two witnesses that saw Maura Murray the night she crashed. We also talk about the rag in the tailpipe and whether it seems plausible Maura was drinking before the crash.
