ICP 23: Nelson Campbell- Acting with Integrity, Compassion & Sharing the Truth. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2124

As passionate as his brother Thomas and his Father T. Colin Campbell, Nelson Campbell has carved out a specialty within Plant-based nutrition through educating individuals at the grassroots level. In the Movie PlantPure Nation, he chronicles his attempt in trying to pass legislation in the state of Kentucky to help people become healthier. He and his wife Kim are also known to implement short plant-based interventions within communities or companies to show people the power of plant-based nutrition. Nelson presents a diplomatic and mature attitude with his work and a focus on the long-term picture. Like health, he realizes this societal and political struggle with policies affecting our health will take time to change. And I’m thankful that he is in it for the long haul. I’d like to thank Teresa Kopel as the newest patron of the Podcast and announce a new ranking milestone. Let me preface this by saying that the ranking for this and all podcasts do change on a daily basis, this podcast was ranked 36 out of thousands of podcasts on this particular hosting site. This is your fault, guys! I love it, and you must love it too. It brings me great satisfaction to see these numbers but also knowing that people are enjoying and hopefully learning something from the content. I hope you enjoy our conversation, on Episode 23 with Nelson Campbell. If you find these conversations valuable, there are many ways you can support this podcast.  ICP 22- Dr. Alan Goldhamer, D.C.- 'What the Health' Controversy, Water Fasting and the Pleasure Trap. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3856

Dr. Alan Goldhamer is the founder of True North Health Centers in Santa Rosa California. He’s a chiropractor who’s been successfully implementing lifestyle medicine to his patient for over 30 years. He, along with Episode #19’s Dr. Michael Klaper and many more health professionals treat the sickest of the sick, the ones who don’t respond to moderate lifestyle changes. He is the last resort, his facility is Health’s “True North”, health’s northern star. And you know what, it works. You might know Dr. Goldhamer from his appearance in the Netflix documentary What the Health, and we speak about the controversy involving some of his patients featured in the film. In essence, people claimed that his patients were paid actors, and he responds. Topics that we cover include his background and how he became interested in health, wellness and water fasting, an explanation of the ‘extreme’ nature of water fasting, cravings, The Pleasure Trap, and we also speak about the Chiropractic profession in general. He and Dr. Doug Lisle are the authors of The Pleasure Trap, which explains the hidden forces that undermine health and happiness. In the past week, I put in a lot of work revising my website to make it more user friendly and provide more content for the end user. I mainly updated the podcast sub-heading and have dedicated an entire page to each podcast that I publish. Each page now include a large headshot at the top, an embedded audio player of that episode, along with the 8 or so infographics I produce and publish on social media for each speaker, as well as a blurb on each guest and easy ways to share each episode on social media. You can check that out at plant-basedcyclist.com/podcast. I appreciate your feedback, and I hope it makes it easier for you to consume the content and get healthier.  ICP 21- Dr. Pam Popper, PhD.- Corrupt practices, Bob Harper and Jail Time. | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 4182

Dr. Pam Popper is a naturopath, an internationally recognized expert on nutrition, medicine and health, and the Executive Director of Wellness Forum Health. She has been featured on many well known nutrition documentaries like Forks Over Knives, Processed People and Making a Killing. She’s also the author of Food Over Medicine and Solving America’s Healthcare Crisis. In our conversation, we go into various topics like health habits people are engaging in that they think are healthy but really aren’t, We speak about Bob Harper, famous personal trainer of The Biggest Loser and his near fatal heart attack back in February 2017, we speak about conflicts of interest within HUGE government agencies and medical associations and organizations. We also get a laugh out of Pam’s razor-thin escape from serving jail time. It’s a crazy, interesting and somewhat depressing story of how people and organizations can be really nasty. As with any episode of the podcast, I hope you enjoy our conversation in Episode 21 and share it on your favorite social media platform. Please reach out with any health or social media questions or concerns you may have. Stay healthy. If you find these conversations valuable, there are many ways you can support this podcast. That is Registered Dietician Andy Bellatti, and this is the Podcast that’s dedicated to making you healthier by interviewing medical doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine. This is Episode #20 of the Ian Cramer Podcast. I’d like to welcome those of you who are new to this podcast and those of you who are seasoned listeners. I appreciate you listening and taking the time out of your day to learn about becoming healthier. This week, I have a conversation with Andy Bellatti. I’ve known about Andy for several years from social media and immediately liked him. He tells it like it is and isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers. From the content that he puts out, one notices that he thinks critically and has a backbone. As you’ll hear in the interview, he isn’t afraid to stand up against unjust and arguably corrupt practices, even if those practices are happening within the very organization that represents him. This episode is brought to you by the patrons of this podcast and my passion for spreading factual, evidence based information for you to live a long, disease free life.  Defying traditional medical dogmas to reverse chronic diseases. Ep. 19 Dr. Michael Klaper | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 4248

Dr. Michael Klaper is a legend in the whole-foods, lifestyle medicine community. He’s a general practitioner who has been treating patients for over 30 years. But not all of that time was spent prescribing lifestyle medicine. Early in his career, he employed the traditional methods he was taught in medical school to treat chronic diseases like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. But he felt frustrated that his patients weren’t getting better. No matter what modern treatment or prescription he recommended, they continued to come back sicker than when they had left him. To make the long story short, Dr. Klaper saw the light, or rather as you will hear in the interview, saw the chicken fat. He did some critical thinking, realized what was happening and recognized not only the etiology of these chronic diseases, but the power inherent in lifestyle medicine. Since that point, Dr. Klaper has successfully treated thousands of patients and reversed their chronic diseases. In our conversation he makes it sound so simple, because it is. Health is a choice, and he explains that what we eat every day makes a profound impact on our health. Dr. Klaper speaks with the spark and vigor of a teenager along with the eloquence of a seasoned scholar which made this conversation particularly enjoyable for me. I hope you find it equally as beneficial and pleasant. He is one of the most thoughtful doctors I have interviewed. In our e-mail correspondence setting up the interview date and time, he and I wrote at some length about our families, our hobbies his appearance in the movie “What the Health” and even our recent weddings. Because of that exchange, Dr. Klaper has earned a special place in my heart and in the history of the podcast.  We are Anatomically, Physiologically and Psychologically Plant Eaters! Ep. 18: Dr. Milton Mills | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4134

In Episode 18, I speak with Dr. Milton Mills, who is a critical care physician in Washington D.C. You may recognize his name as he was recently featured on the health documentary "What The Health" which as of June 2017, is on Netflix. What a great film! Incredibly eye opening. It will broaden your horizons and make you think differently about the health care system in this country. We speak mainly about 2 topics: the evolutionary reasons why we should eat plant based and racial bias affecting nutritional policies in the US. Both of which I knew very little about, which made this interview very interesting and enlightening. One house keeping item to take care of this week: I'd like to extend a big thank you to Kendra Walling. She’s the newest Patron of the podcast and is a huge supporter the PBC Facebook page, too. She enjoys the podcasts coming out every other week and I appreciate your support, Kendra.  Ep. 17: Dr. Heather Shenkman- 90% of what I see as a cardiologist is diet or lifestyle related. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3064

Dr. Heather Shenkman is an interventional cardiologist practicing in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Shenkman was exposed to vegetarianism early on via her brother and soon followed in his footsteps. But as time went on, she learned that what she was doing still wasn’t the best lifestyle she could be living. As a doctor who truly practices what she preaches and who is doing as much as she possibly can for her patients and their wellbeing, Dr. Shenkman in our conversation was able to succinctly put her finger on many reasons why more doctors aren’t prescribing lifestyle medicine. Her answers made me shake my head in disbelief, but , like she said the medical establishment is trending in the right direction and we are seeing progress. Our conversation goes in several directions: her specialty as a cardiologist, her diet, her views and philosophies on certain myths and misconceptions and her experience as a plant-based triathlete and how she is able to train and compete on a 100% vegan lifestyle without negatively affecting her fitness or recovery. I hope you enjoy and learn something from our conversation on Episode #17 with Dr. Healther Shenkman. If you find these conversations valuable, there are many ways you can support this podcast.  Ep. 16: Dr. Terry Mason- What we have is different manifestations of one disease. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4137

The artist of the intro song is Birocratic who is also responsible for the last intro song I've played in the previous 15 episodes. His music can be found at http://birocratic.bandcamp.com. Every other Saturday, pressing the publish button makes me feel especially good, and today is no different. I am honored to bring you my conversation with a Forks Over Knives featured physician, Urologist, Dr. Terry Mason. At this point, you may be asking yourself “What does a Urologist have to do with Lifestyle medicine, or making me healthier”? Good question. Dr. Mason understands the relationships of functions and diseases in the human body. He says, “What I’ve come to believe is that we don’t have a bunch of different diseases. We have different manifestations of one disease.”. As a former practicing Urologist, Dr. Mason is a global authority on erectile dysfunction research, but he’s also a champion of educating about diet and emphasizing the power of diet and lifestyle choices on the progression and manifestation of chronic disease. YES! erectile dysfunction is a manifestation of a chronic disease. Please stay tuned. Man or woman, young or old, I PROMISE, you will learn something from this episode and come away with at least one more tool to add to your ‘health’ tool box.  Ep. 15: Dr. Brooke Goldner- Reversing Autoimmune Disorders with Diet and Lifestyle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4091

I’m very excited to bring you my interview with Dr. Brooke Goldner. This has been one of my favorite interviews to date because of Dr. Goldner's enthusiasm, her confidence and the hope that she exudes through the following personal and professional health-related experiences. If you or someone you know has a chronic disease or an autoimmune disorder, this is the podcast for you! As you listen to Dr. Goldner, you will soon realize this isn’t her first rodeo. She’s successfully treated countless patients and educated many medical professionals on the subject of preventing and reversing chronic diseases with diet and lifestyle changes. She has the science squarely behind her yet is able to articulate her knowledge in language for the lay person. Dr. Goldner is the author of Goodbye Lupus, a first person account of her struggle with and ultimate victory over an autoimmune disorder that consumed her for more than 10 years of her life. But, she was able to maintain a laser-like focus on her long-term goal of becoming a doctor. Helped by a loving, supportive family and, after marriage, by her husband, Dr. Goldner conquered this disorder, went on to have 2 children, which doctors said would never happen, and is now educating and helping others become healthier. A couple of house keeping items this week. I’d like to extend a big thank you to our newest patron, Jesse Cramer. If that name sounds familiar to you, it's familiar to me too! Like other supportive patrons, Jesse saw the value and long-term vision of this podcast as something he wanted to invest in. If donating to the creative tip jar of Patreon isn’t in the cards for you at this point, not a big deal.  Ep. 14: Dr. John McDougall- It's the Food! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4281

Dr. John McDougall is a pioneer in the lifestyle and preventative medicine movement having successfully treated his patients this way for nearly 50 years. If you like hearing someone in a position of authority who doesn’t mince words, this is the interview for you. Dr. McDougall made me laugh many times during our talk because he was so candid and truthful and spoke with such passion. In the realm of health and nutrition, if you’ve ever had questions about protein, carbs, fats, paleo, low carb, high carb or potatoes, Dr. McDougall presents what he has learned and experienced on these topics including what the body of evidence says. But Dr. McDougall wasn’t always this outspoken and confident about what he did. Very early in his career, he couldn’t get his patients with chronic diseases to get well, and thought he was a bad doctor. He did everything he was taught in medical school and nothing was working. It took another 3 years of education in internal medicine and a realization of what the root causes of these chronic diseases were to finally make his patients better and pave the way for the rest of his long and successful career. I’d like to plug my Facebook page, Plant-Based Cyclist, as another resource for you to use to get healthier. I post about the foods I’m eating, as well as additional podcast content, 2-3 minute preview videos of upcoming podcasts and information on cycling and fueling your body with a plant-centered diet. As a heads up, at a few points in this interview, the sound quality is a bit poor and I apologize about that. I hope it’s possible to, one day, interview every doctor and scholar in person to make the content more personal and the audio quality crystal clear for your listening pleasure. I hope you enjoy and learn something from this podcast, Episode #14 with Dr. John McDougall.  Ep. 13: Dr. Kim Williams- Vegan Cardiologist Influencing Patients, Doctors and Medicine | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3914

Before we begin today's interview, I have one housekeeping item to take care of this week. I recently received an extremely generous donation to the Patreon account of this podcast. As a testament to the power of social media, I extend a big Thank You to Julian from South Korea who became the newest patron and the first member of the Board of Directors for the Ian Cramer Podcast. Why does he choose to be a patron? Because he sees the value of these podcasts. He recognizes the work that goes into them and the enjoyment and value they provide to his life, and he wants to chip in to affirm that message. These podcasts are free and always will be, but I appreciate any donation you care to make to demonstrate your support. Check out Patreon.com/IanCramerPodcast for more information. Thank you! Dr. Kim Williams is the chief cardiologist in the Division of Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He’s also a professor of heart research within Rush University’s medical school. Dr. Williams has treated thousands of heart patients, the vast majority of whom suffered chronic, preventable conditions. Over the course of his stellar career, he realized that much of what he was doing was mitigating symptoms. The standard treatments he was prescribing helped but he wasn’t getting to the root causes. Over time he re-considered many questions: why did so many of his patients need these medications? Why did they suffer heart attacks in the first place? And were stents or bypass surgery their only recourse? When he realized his own LDL cholesterol was creeping up, Dr. Williams made important dietary changes based on what he knew about diet and its effects on cholesterol and he saw nearly a 50% decrease in his LDL number. He said “Wait a minute, if changing my diet can lower my high cholesterol by 50% and lower my risk of chronic diseases, why am I not prescribing this to my patients? It's this powerful shift in his thinking -- from treating illness to fostering wellness -- that we focus on today. Receiving one of the highest honors for a cardiologist in the world, he was elected by his peers to serve as President of the American College of Cardiology in 2015. Trust me, he’s not trying to ruffle any feathers, but as a seasoned cardiologist who is now prescribing lifestyle medicine and dietary changes to his patients, his methods are certainly viewed as unorthodox and going against the grain within the current medical paradigm. But as you will hear in the podcast, we talk about how these recommendations are firmly based in peer-reviewed research. What's more, they’re evidence based treatments shown to prevent or reverse chronic diseases of the heart and, finally....they work better and are safer than surgeries or prescriptions. I hope you enjoy our conversation, Episode #13 with Dr. Kim Williams.  Ep. 11: T. Colin Campbell, PhD: Protein, Cancer and Re-Evaluating Personal Beliefs. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4982

It gives me great pleasure to bring you an interview with Dr. T. Colin Campbell, PhD. Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, Dr. Campbell held the highest position within the Department of Nutrition Studies. He also taught and conducted research at Virginia Tech as well as MIT. With a background in toxicology, biochemistry and nutrition, he has conducted many studies on the interaction of various nutrients in the body, namely protein, and how those nutrients contribute to health or play a role in diseases. His crowning achievement, The China Study, was hailed by the New York Times as the “most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease” . We mention many times in this interview that he has no conflicts of interest and that his research has not been Influenced by any industry. Dr. Campbell followed where the research led him and never stopped asking questions. He also followed his heart, conducting his studies free of bias, in an effort to do the greatest amount of good for the public. I’ve known of Dr. Campbell’s story ever since I watched Forks Over Knives in 2011 and what strikes me, as a rarity in this world, is the fact that he could change his position on topics 180 degrees based on evidence. In today's podcast we speak about the evolution of his studies. As a young researcher, he had preconceived notions and hypotheses that protein was the most important nutrient and that the more people ate from animal sources, the better. But as time went on...as he made more critical observations...as he read literature and conducted his own peer-reviewed experiments, he was forced to re-evaluate his own personal beliefs. He grew up on a dairy farm and once touted dairy as nature's perfect food, yet now he can’t emphasize enough how people should re-think that familiar idea. It’s that ability to re-evaluate his beliefs, admit he was wrong, and change his position when better evidence presented itself that makes me admire Dr. Campbell and respect the arc of his comprehensive studies. I am confident you will too. I hope you enjoy this interview and look forward to many more with highly respected MD’s and PhD’s within this movement. Thank you for listening to Episode 11 with Dr. T. Colin Campbell. If you enjoyed this Podcast, you can be a part of the movement and help spread the message by sharing the Podcast or contributing to its Patreon page.  Ep. 10: Dr. Laurie Marbas- How 3 patients changed her medical destiny | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4036

Dr. Laurie Marbas is a family practice physician currently based in Boca Raton, Florida. In her position as Medical Director of Dr. Joel Furhman’s Health Oasis, an outpatient clinic, she helps people regain their health and reverse chronic diseases with diet and lifestyle changes. While an Active Duty Medical doctor with the air force, Dr. Marbas served abroad in various countries and is well traveled in the US, having worked and lived in New Mexico, Oregon, Maryland, Texas, Colorado, and Florida. Dr. Marbas's insightful approach perpetuates a theme you may be recognizing more and more in various interviews on my podcasts: Like several other dedicated doctors, she was able and willing to rethink the efficacy of standard practice methods in the medical paradigm when it came to treating chronic ailments such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. But she had serious homework to do on lifestyle medicine because when she started treating her patients in this new way, there wasn’t that much information out there, which goes to show how extraordinary she is. Find out how 3 separate patients with three seemingly unrelated conditions including a stomach ache, ADHD and Lupus along with a story about a refrigerator led Dr. Marbas to fundamentally change the way she treats patients, as well as totally revamp the way she feeds her family and ultimately deliver her to her dream job. Dr. Marbas also interviewed me as part of her podcast, which you can find on sound cloud.  Ep. 9: Dr. Ted Barnett-High Tech Doctor with Low Tech Solutions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4002

In this weeks episode, I speak to Dr. Ted Barnett, aka. Dr. Veggie. Ted is an Interventional Radiologist in Rochester, NY. By and large, a lot of what he does day in and day out is an attempt to counter the bad effects of people’s diets and lifestyles. He is the high tech doctor with low tech solutions and believes all doctors, especially those who perform procedures, should spend at least part of each day trying to put themselves out of business. Dr. Barnett is one of those doctors who’s done so much for lifestyle medicine yet you’ve probably never heard of him. I’m so glad I am able to bring a guy like Dr. Barnett onto the Podcast because he deserves more recognition than he has gotten. He’s a self-less individual driven to make people healthier by providing evidenced based information and by treating the root cause of their chronic ailments. He is leading the charge in putting Rochester, NY on the map as a hub for plant-based and lifestyle medicine and wants to ultimately make Lifestyle Medicine mainstream medicine.
