Most of the Klamath River (see algae map) looks like pea soup of late. A toxic algae bloom is affecting the river on both sides of the state line. Oregon ended, then reissued an algae warning for the Link River and the Klamath River above Keno Dam. On the California side, warnings are in effect for much of the main stem of the river and for Copco and Iron Gate reservoirs. Andromeda and Venus sound like great characters to build a dance around. Now add wheelchairs. That is exactly what the art/architecture/social justice group Kinetic Light is doing with its work "DESCENT." The piece will have its West Coast debut at the Britt Festivals on Friday (September 29), after Kinetic Light spends five days in residence at Crater Renaissance Academy in Central Point.

Stories of immigration in the United States--both legal and not--tend to focus on numbers and generalities. Journalist Lauren Markham went looking for a personal tale behind the facts and figures. She found a pair of brothers who were forced to flee gang violence in El Salvador and headed north. Markham tells the story in the book The Far Away Brothers , an examination of the brothers' situation and immigration policy more broadly.

California's far North recently gained some clout in the state legislature. First District Assembly Member Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) was chosen by fellow Republicans to be the party's leader in the house. The GOP is in the minority in a chamber where Democrats hold a super-majority. And Dahle has some ideas about reducing the Democratic edge in the 2018 elections.

Families moving from place to place for seasonal work can put a strain on their childrens' schooling. And the Medford School District addresses the issue with its Migrant Summer School program. It allows students whose education has been disrupted to catch up on school work, especially their language skills. This summer's session serves a record number of students, around 320.

Oregon U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley is getting well known outside the state he represents. Merkley has been outspoken in his criticism and opposition to the Trump administration, including a true talking-marathon filibuster in opposition to the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Senators are heading back to their home states for a delayed August recess, and a chance to meet with constituents.

Smoke has been a more regular feature of the region's skies of late. Up until the beginning of August, the fire season did not feature the huge outbreaks of fires of recent years. But it may just be a matter of time. Whatever happens, crews and equipment from Oregon Department of Forestry and other agencies are ready for lightning or human-caused fires, or whatever comes their way.

Oregon's tax system ensures that school budgets are relatively tight every year. Recessions make them worse. Several years ago, the Medford School District was forced to cut special education funding, essentially telling the department to do more with less. It did. Outcomes have improved, by several measures.
