Bleeding Dodger Blue with Jason Turbow | Unplugged #186 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:33:49

Brandon Steiner chats with author and freelance sportswriter Jason Turbow, set to release his third book "They Bled Blue" about the 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers. About Jason: Jason Turbow is the author of They Bled Blue (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, June 2019); Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017); and The Baseball Codes (Pantheon, 2010). He's written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated, among other publications. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. About They Bled Blue: In the Halberstam tradition of capturing a season through its unforgettable figures, They Bled Blue is a sprawling, mad tale of excess and exuberance, the likes of which could only have occurred in that place, at that time. That it culminated in an unlikely World Series win—during a campaign split by the longest player strike in baseball history—is not even the most interesting thing about this team. The Dodgers were led by the garrulous Tommy Lasorda—part manager, part cheerleader—who unyieldingly proclaimed devotion to the franchise through monologues about bleeding Dodger blue and worshiping the “Big Dodger in the Sky,” and whose office hosted a regular stream of Hollywood celebrities. Steve Garvey, the All-American, All-Star first baseman, had anchored the most durable infield in major league history, and, along with Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey, was glaringly aware that 1981 would represent the end of their run together. The season’s real story, however, was one that nobody expected at the outset: a chubby lefthander nearly straight out of Mexico, twenty years old with a wild delivery and a screwball as his flippin’ out pitch. The Dodgers had been trying for decades to find a Hispanic star to activate the local Mexican population; Fernando Valenzuela was the first to succeed, and it didn’t take long for Fernandomania to sweep far beyond the boundaries of Chavez Ravine. They Bled Blue is the rollicking yarn of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ crazy 1981 season. Purchase a copy today: https://www.amazon.com/They-Bled-Blue-Fernandomania-Strike-Season/dp/1328715531

Dear George, Dear Mary: A Novel of George Washington's First Love A novel about heiress Mary Philipse's relationship with George Washington, based on historical accounts, letters, and personal journals by nine-time New York Emmy Award-winning journalist Mary Calvi. “Love is said to be an involuntary passion, and it is, therefore, contended that it cannot be resisted.” ―George Washington Did unrequited love spark a flame that ignited a cause that became the American Revolution? Never before has this story about George Washington been told. Crafted from hundreds of letters, witness accounts, and journal entries, Dear George, Dear Mary explores George’s relationship with his first love, New York heiress Mary Philipse, the richest belle in Colonial America.  Creating the Ultimate Gameday Experience with Daina Falk, The Hungry Fan | Unplugged #175 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:52

She grew up at sporting events and around professional athletes who were clients of her father, David Falk, a pioneer of the sports agent industry. At a very young age, Daina fell in love with game day and the sports fan experience. So much so, in fact, that she only did one college application—it was Duke University or bust. Her goal: to be a Cameron Crazy. While at Duke, Daina traveled extensively and studied cooking. After college, she was still obsessed with sports and sports fandom so she worked for teams and produced and hosted network segments around major sporting events. But she kept coming back to the idea of the sports fan's experience and how it lacked an arbiter of taste—a curator à la Martha Stewart. Always wanting to be authentic and wake up everyday excited to go work, Daina decided to create a platform for the tailgaters, homegaters, sports- bar-goers and sporting event attendees of the world. Thus, Hungry Fan® was born. As the founder and face of Hungry Fan®, Daina can often be seen hosting events, TV shows and segments or promoting her cookbook. She has appeared on shows such as Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Today Show; and she hosted Toughest Tailgate, which highlight NFL tailgating traditions, on CBS Sports. She has done celebrity chef appearances for teams such as the New York Giants and Yankees. And her first cookbook hit bookshelves in August 2016 and was a bestseller on Amazon.com in Tailgate Cooking. Published by Oxmoor House (of Time Inc.), the game day cookbook features Daina's own Fangating™recipes and those she collected from Olympians and professional athletes such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Andre Agassi, Boomer Esiason and Robert Griffin III.
