Encore Episode - Change Your Brain: ADHD to Alzheimer's, Tips from Dr. Perlmutter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Lifestyle choices do in fact contribute to dementia, Alzheimer's and other brain-related diseases.According to acclaimed physician and researcher, Dr. David Perlmutter, one of the most compelling ideas that has evolved over the past decade is that Alzheimer's is by and large preventable.  Unfortunately, the current model for addressing Alzheimer's is reactive, not proactive. As Dr. Perlmutter says, it's a "diagnose and adios" situation. Get farm to table ingredients and recipes delivered right to your door every week with Sun Basket. What he found to be most problematic is lack of exercise, elevated blood sugar, and obesity. The lesson is that lifestyle choices do in fact contribute to dementia, Alzheimer's and other brain-related diseases. Research has shown that diabetes increases your risk for Alzheimer's by up to four times. The problem is, the common person doesn't get this information. Instead, the solution often comes in the form of a pharmaceutical advertisement.  The risk factors that are most modifiable are: Keep blood sugar at an even keel, even within the womb. Exercise, exercise, exercise. Aerobic exercise has a profound impact on brain health (as much as 50% reduced risk for dementia). Dr. Perlmutter also has done extensive research on how the brain and microbiome are connected, particularly in terms of childhood conditions such as ADHD, autism, celiac disease, type-2 diabetes, and health concerns that appear later in life. Listen as Dr. Perlmutter joins Dr. Taz to share viable ways you can change your brain to prevent a number of diseases.  Sponsor: Get farm to table ingredients and recipes delivered right to your door every week with Sun Basket.  EP 53 - Dynamic Running Therapy: New Tool for Managing Anxiety & Depression | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

There’s a highly effective new way to leave anxiety, anger, fearfulness and depression behind, called Dynamic Running Therapy (DRT).Anxiety, anger, fearfulness, depression... there are many forms of emotional turmoil that get us down, and just as many forms of therapy to try and help. Some just aren’t effective: after a few sessions on the couch, the problems return. That’s one reason 18.1 million of American adults are afflicted with anxiety today, and why the U.S. is among the most depressed countries in the world. But, there’s a highly effective new way to leave our blues behind, called Dynamic Running Therapy (DRT). It combines moving and mindfulness, harnessing the freeing energy of exercise and the healing power of self-awareness. DRT isn’t just for fitness-minded: You don’t even have to run to do it. The combination of thought exercises and moving can be done at a walk or a run; whatever works for each person. As you move, there are plenty of chances to reflect and see how far you’ve come. The sense of accomplishment brings with it a newfound energy and confidence, and that, in turn, builds the strength to keep moving... farther and farther away from emotional pain. Organifi. Save 20% NOW! Use code WHOLEHEALTH. Click here to order. Here are five key steps to get moving, get mindful, and lift yourself out of low moods, depression, anxiety and stress: 1. Make room for your feelings. As you move, you will reconnect with feelings you may have hidden deep down. That sensation of “emotion in motion” can be very powerful. So prepare yourself to welcome these feelings, and become aware of them as you move. That way you’ll be able to understand them and more easily process them as they emerge. 2. Work at your own pace. It’s not important whether you run or walk, but that you move. DRT can and should be adapted to whatever level of fitness you have. They key is simply to challenge yourself physically to some degree, some of the time. If you struggle with taking a half a mile walk, set that as your first pace. If you love to sprint, go for it. Your goal is to be moving enough where the blood flowers a little faster. And you don’t need to push yourself too hard, or to maintain the same pace throughout the whole session. 3. Listen to your body. Mindful running isn’t complicated or particularly challenging. You are not actively changing anything – merely noticing the tone of your inner dialogue and meeting whatever you find there with acceptance and patience, letting it pass on by naturally. It is an open-ended practice, continuing until you decide to stop. As you begin your walk or run, pay attention to what your body is communicating as well: is it slumped with the weight of the world, or is there’s a spring in your step? 4. Be mindful of your movement. How you run or walk may indicate how you move in the wider world, such as in your relationships or work life. Are you quick to start but tire rapidly? Do you keep to a consistent paced but just can’t let go of it? Do you save it all for a sprint at the finish, and then forget the rest of the run that came before it? Part of mindful movement is understanding and learning what your moving style says about how you address the rest of your life. 5. Don’t strive too hard. Mindful movement, whether it’s running or walking, is not like conventional exercise. It’s actually important to avoid working too hard. Don’t strive: it can create far more stress and anxiety. Don’t try to run your first or fastest four miles ever at the same time as you’re also trying to understand your feelings. The key is finding your pace, finding your footing, and finding yourself. It will happen on its own if you stay present. Movement is a part our lives. It’s in our DNA, and it’s hardwired into our own behaviors. Returning to that essential state can help us overcome so many emotional hurdles. It gives us a physical context — a sense of truly passing through time and space — that make it easier to shift our per

EP 49 - Making Mindfulness Practical: Tips & Tricks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Through a conscious relationship with your failures, you can internalize a new set of beliefs and behaviors. When we think about making changes, a lot of us naturally gravitate toward quick fixes: a diet, a detox, some online relationship or self help advice. But, we may start to feel thwarted quickly when our desire to change doesn’t yield the results we want or when we fail, not realizing that failure is an essential part of the process. There’s no growth without failure, but many individuals devalue failure and want to bypass the work and the discomfort involved. Ironically, it’s exactly through a conscious relationship with our failures that we can internalize a new set of beliefs and behaviors. Changing deeply-entrenched behavioral patterns -- even with the solid knowledge base about what steps to take -- can be extremely daunting. It’s in this moment of failure that you get to look under the hood and examine what’s the disconnect between your intention, your resistance and corrective action. Good intentions simply don’t go very far without practices that can anchor you in your intentions. You need to be able to have a conversation with yourself that can help you get past the emotional reactivity you’re experiencing, and into the heart of the resistance you’re encountering. There are two aspects to this process. The underlying beliefs, narratives and values that function as the foundation of your sense of self and how you move in the world. Then, the external layer of behaviors and habits that reinforce them. The underlying beliefs are often unconscious or not in your immediate field of awareness and that’s where most of us get stuck. Mindfulness and meditation practice can be powerful allies in your pursuit of change and self awareness. They enable you to become present with your thoughts and feelings and sensations, in a non-judgmental, compassionate position. Once you can step back and move into more of an observer role, you can uncover the deeper roots of what prevents you from making meaningful, tangible shifts in your life. Mindfulness and meditation can also support you on your journey of change. They are daily practices that can help you reset when you flounder and they allow you to gently re-align with your intentions and values. Self compassion is also a critical component to the process. It creates a softening within yourself and a receptivity and sensitivity to the difficulty involved. It’s far less punishing than a top-down approach or trying to muster vast amounts of will power as a motivation for long term change. Listen as Shira Myrow, mindfulness-based psychotherapist, relationship expert and meditation teacher, shares mindful solutions for meaningful change.
