Rescue the Rescuer host, Stephen Kavalkovich, introduced us to first responders Ben Vernon and Jared Cheselske. We sat down for a live interview to discuss their journey as fire fighters and first responders who are advocating for everyone in their field to take mental health seriously.  On June 24, 2015, Ben Vernon's life changed. While responding to a “routine medical assistance” call, he was stabbed multiple times by a bystander. The incident and the ensuing ordeal left Ben with a changed perspective. Ben shares his story so that others, who may be going through a similar situation, can know that what they are experiencing is not their fault and that they are not alone. He wants others to know the impact this kind of event can have on a person, and how best to help someone who is going through crisis. Jared Cheselske sits down for the first interview he's done on radio to discuss the multiple trauma's he's endured in his career and how they eventually took their tole on his mental well being. His story is like many other first responders who don't have appropriate access to mental healthcare or understanding around how to effectively handle the stress of their work.  Full article here.

Savage’s career has spanned healthcare across the private, non-profit, and governmental sectors. Most recently, she served as Chief Privacy Officer at the   U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.  At ONC, Lucia and her team advised the National Coordinator, HHS offices, and other federal agencies about appropriate electronic health information privacy and security policies and technologies. Issues included HIPAA, state privacy law, research on human subjects, the Privacy Act, and security engineering. In that role, Savage collaborated regularly with other federal and state agencies; independent commissions including the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commissions; and foreign countries. Prior to joining ONC, Lucia served as the Senior Associate General Counsel at United Healthcare, where she supervised a team that represented United on its work with large data transactions related to health information exchanges, healthcare transparency projects, academic research, and other data-driven health care innovation projects. Lucia has a B.A. from Mills College in Oakland, CA, and received her Juris Doctor summa cum laude from New York University School of Law in May 1989, where she was awarded the Order of the Coif. Cheryl Sharp joins us at National Council for Behavioral Health's annual conference #NatCon18 to discuss her presentation and role with the council.  Cheryl S. Sharp, MSW, ALWF is an Exclusive Consultant to the National Council for Behavioral Health Trauma-Informed Services and Suicide Prevention Efforts.  As part of the trauma-informed care (TIC) team, Cheryl works nationally to facilitate TIC Learning Communities and is a content expert on trauma, resilience and TIC implementation.  Her role as Exclusive Consultant for Suicide Prevention is to work nationally with National Council partners engaged in moving the needle on preventing suicide.  Cheryl is a person in long term recovery from mental health and addiction challenges.  She is a nine time suicide attempt survivor who believes that understanding what happened to people changes the conversation from what is wrong with them.  Sharp has worked with adult trauma survivors for over 30 years and is passionate about the fact that people can and do recover and go on to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Prior to becoming an exclusive consultant for the National Council, Cheryl started and led all of the National Council’s trauma-informed initiatives.  She led On Our Own of Maryland’s Statewide Consumer Networks as the WRAP Outreach Coordinator and was the Executive Director of the STAR Process located in Arizona as well as serving on their Board of Directors.  Sharp received her BA in Psychology and a BA in Women’s Studies, followed by her Masters Degree in Social Work from East Carolina University in North Carolina. Dr. Ron Manderscheid joins Kristin Walker to discuss his presentation at the 18th Annual Behavioral Health Informatics Conference and Exposition in May 2018.  Ron Manderscheid, Ph.D., serves as the Executive Director of the National Association of County Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Directors. The Association represents county and local authorities in Washington, D.C., and provides a national program of technical assistance and support.  Concurrently, he is Executive Director of the National Association for Rural Mental Health, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Mental Health, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, and Adjunct Professor, School of Social Work, University of Southern California. Dr. Manderscheid serves on the boards of the Cosmos Club, the Employee Assistance Research Foundation, the Danya Institute,  the Council on Quality and Leadership, the NASMHPD Research Institute, and the Nation Register of Health Service psychologists. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Coalition for Whole Health. Previously, he served as the Director of Mental Health and Substance Use Programs at the Global Health Sector of SRA International and in several federal leadership roles in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Santopietro joins host Kristin Walker to discuss the panel presentation he moderated at The National Council for Behavioral Health's annual conference #NatCon18. Dr. Santopietro is the new President and Medical Director of Silver Hill Hospital. He graduated from Yale University, Northwestern University Medical School, and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He serves on multiple national boards including the American Association of Community Psychiatrists, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the American Hospital Association’s Governing Council of the Section for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services. He was president of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society in 2012 where he earned an award for his leadership during the Sandy Hook tragedy. Dr. Santopietro was appointed by governors in both North Carolina and Connecticut to serve on mental health commissions and co-chaired a task force on mental health convened by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine.
