Murder, Alaska

Summary: The Murder, Alaska podcast covers crime and the law in Alaska and mysteries all over the world. I am Leo Helmar, a paralegal and researcher. I have been doing long-term research into the Benolken murders, a 1982 double homicide in my hometown of Juneau, Alaska for which I believe defendant Newton Lambert was falsely convicted.

Interview with Dr. Jack Cashill about his book "Ron Brown's Body" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:03:14

Dr. Jack Cashill and I talk about his book "Ron Brown's Body: How One Man's Death Saved the Clinton Presidency and Hillary's Future". The book focuses on the April 3rd, 1996 plane crash that killed sitting Secretary of Commerce Brown and 34 others on a mysterious trade mission in Croatia. In this interview we talk about the lead up to the plane crash and the multiple fronts of trouble facing Brown before the crash including an ongoing Independent Counsel review and a complicated natural gas deal in Oklahoma that allowed Clinton mega-fundraisers Gene and Nora Lum to siphon off tens of millions of dollars from consumers by overcharging for natural gas. This natural gas theft was being abetted and protected by members of the Clinton white house including Chief of Staff Thomas "Mac" McLarty and Ron Brown as well as Ron Brown's son Michael Brown.  Interview with Mike Campbell about his book Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last - Part II | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:20

In part two of my interview with author Mike Campbell about his book "Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last" we briefly cover again the circumstances of Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan's disappearance. Mike then recounts the timeline of the official narrative and the mainstream acceptance of other ideas like the crashed-and-sank hypothesis and the Gardner Island or Nikumaroro-landing hypothesis and why they have no merit. Mike then talks about the work of TIGHAR and Ric Gillespie and the almost performance art-like expeditions that they've engaged in including using cadaver dogs to try and unearth evidence of Earhart on Nikumaroro many years after her disappearance. Mike also details the dearth of evidence for these ideas and analyzes why the media continues to support them despite their lack of substance.  Interview with Mike Campbell about his book Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last - Part I | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:22

Part one of my interview with author Mike Campbell, a researcher who has written the definitive book about Amelia Earhart's disappearance "Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last" and also writes a blog at earharttruth.com that contains articles full of pictures and reference materials about Earhart and her final flight. We discuss Amelia Earhart's flying career and how she got to the point where she attempted her fateful flight in 1937, a world record attempt to fly around the globe. We then get into the evidence that exists of what became to Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan after they took off from Lae, New Guinea and  disappeared according to the mainstream account. These include witnesses who saw Earhart come down near Mili Atoll in the Marshall Islands, witnesses on Saipan which had been occupied by the Japanese until the end of World War II and where Earhart was said by witnesses to have kept as a prisoner, and military personnel involved in the U.S. takeover of Saipan in 1944 who saw evidence of Earhart's presence on Saipan including seeing her plane which was destroyed by the U.S. military and her briefcase and other personal effects. Part two of this series examines other ideas that continue to be propagated by the mainstream media of what happened to Earhart and Noonan and will be released next Monday. Mike Campbell and I talk about the crash-and-sank theory and the Nikumaroro or Gardner Island theory both of which have been thoroughly debunked as well as the recent History documentary about a photo that is alleged to depict Earhart and Noonan on a dock in Saipan that was apparently recently discovered.  Episode 9: Dr. Graeme MacQueen on 9/11 truth and the Anthrax attacks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:15

One of the leading lights of the 9/11 truth movement, Dr. Graeme MacQueen has a PhD in comparative religion from Harvard. He taught in the Religious Studies department of McMaster University based in Hamilton, Ontario for 30 years. MacQueen, now retired from his post at McMaster, was formerly the co-editor of the Journal of 9/11 Studies and published The 2001 Anthrax Deception: The Case for a Domestic Conspiracy in October of 2014, a book deconstructing the official story of the Anthrax attacks that followed closely the events of 9/11 and made a powerful case that the Anthrax attacks must've been concocted in the deep recesses of the military industrial complex of the American government.  Dr. MacQueen has written a pair of deeply interesting articles on the topic of 9/11 this year. The "Inside Job" Hypothesis of the 9/11 Attacks: JFK, 9/11 and the American Left which addresses the left's reluctance to seriously consider issues like 9/11 and the JFK assassination and just this past week his article 9/11: The Pentagon's B-Movie was published, a piece that illustrates the peculiar unreality and filmic nature of the 9/11 attacks.  Show notes and links: Dr. MacQueen's 2014 book The 2001 Anthrax Deception: The Case for a Domestic Conspiracy: https://www.amazon.com/2001-Anthrax-Deception-Domestic-Conspiracy/dp/0986073121/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Dr. MacQueen's March 2017 article The "Inside Job" Hypothesis of the 9/11 Attacks: JFK, 9/11 and the American Left: https://www.globalresearch.ca/the-inside-job-hypothesis-of-the-911-attacks-911-and-the-american-left/5579911 Dr. MacQueen's article published on September 10th of 2017 9/11: The Pentagon's B-Movie: https://dissidentvoice.org/2017/09/911-the-pentagons-b-movie/ The Department of Justice's report Amerithrax Investigative Summary: https://www.justice.gov/archive/amerithrax/docs/amx-investigative-summary.pdf Other recent radio and podcast appearances by Dr. MacQueen: MacQueen and Robbie Martin on A Very Heavy Agenda podcast (The 9/11 Bulletin Episode 4: The 2001 Anthrax Attacks w/ Graeme MacQueen published on youtube 3/30/17): https://youtu.be/1hudD6TB9kk MacQueen and Tim Kelly on Our Interesting Times podcast (Graeme MacQueen on 9/11: The Pentagon's B-Movie published on youtube 9/18/17): https://youtu.be/C-69ABnSKqY MacQueen on Public Radio Exchange - Progressive Spirit show: https://beta.prx.org/stories/215294

Episode 5: The murder of Maggie Wigen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:51:26

In the spring of 2003, Maggie Wigen went missing from the small town of Tenakee Springs. Two years later, James Harmon was convicted of the murder of Wigen. In 2016, Harmon's request for Post-Conviction Relief was sent back to Superior Court from the Alaska Court of Appeals to further investigate if Harmon had adequate representation at his trial. Harmon alleges that his trial attorneys and his first PCR attorney failed to adequately represent him. The Alaska Court of Appeals agreed with Harmon that there was at least some basis to further investigate the circumstances of Harmon's representation. There is a hearing scheduled on 4.17.17 in the PCR to determine scheduling for this matter. Episode 5 of the podcast summarizes what transpired from the moment Wigen went missing up until this week. In early April of 1982 James and Ann Benolken were murdered in their apartment in downtown Juneau, Alaska. This podcast recounts the story of the Benolken murders and the two subsequent trials that occurred in the aftermath of the brutal stabbings. In episode 4 of the Murder, Alaska podcast we examine the Juneau Police investigation and a handful of the police that testified in State of Alaska v. Newton Lambert. We also focus on a liquor store clerk and a bank manager's testimony at the trial of Newton Lambert. Lambert was one of two co-defendants who were tried for the murders. Finally we focus on Special Agent Michael Malone of the FBI who was the State's hair expert at the trial of Newton Lambert.  Episode 1 – The Rachelle Waterman case | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:41:51

Rachelle Waterman was a 16 year old high school Junior in Craig, Alaska in November of 2004 when she conspired with two local 24 year old men to kill her mother Lauri Waterman. This is the first episode of a new podcast series by local Alaskan paralegal Leo Helmar. Please visit murderalaska.com for more info and keep checking back for new episodes! On November 14th, 2004, a hunter found a smoking minivan on a logging road in Craig, a small logging and fishing town in Southeast Alaska, and reported the find to local authorities. Also in the van was a badly burned corpse which would later be identified as Lauri Waterman. Sgt. Randy McPherron, a renowned homicide investigator for the Alaska State Troopers, was dispatched to Craig and within three days Sgt. McPherron had all three principle conspirators in the murder of Lauri Waterman in custody. They were Rachelle, her 16 year old daughter who had been at a volleyball tournament up North in Anchorage, Alaska, and two 24 year old men with whom Rachelle had had sexual relationships with named Jason Arrant and Brian Radel. The ghoulish details of their crime would become clear in the subsequent murder trials. This episode goes into further detail about how the crime went down and the fallout in the intervening years.  Murder, Alaska podcast Episode 2 – Introduction to The Benolken Murders | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:35:16

In April of 1982 the bodies of James and Ann Benolken were found in their apartment on South Franklin Street in Juneau, Alaska. They had been tied up and brutally stabbed to death. Two men were subsequently tried for the foul crime: Newton Lambert and Emanuel Telles. Lambert was convicted of the murder of Ann Benolken and Telles was acquitted of both murders and walked free from the court room. Just over a year later, though, Telles was in turn murdered. We pick up the story somewhere in 2008 or 2009 when I was working at the Public Defender Agency in Juneau as a law office assistant. One day I opened a letter Newton Lambert had sent asking for help looking into his case and I began falling into the rabbit hole of the Benolken murders that day and haven’t stopped. Please join me for this introductory episode about the Benolken murders where we will set the stage for a future series of episodes centering around the April 1982 double murder case.
