Jon Morelli - From Jock to Juicer: A Story of Becoming Enlightened and Enlivened | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:31

This Episode is with Jon Morelli, or as the instagram world knows him, Jonny Juicer. I met Jonny less than a year ago, but we have already formed a deep friendship that feels so much older than that. To those who knew him growing up, Jonny was not at all someone you’d expect to be waking up each day to make green juice, wearing colorful tye-dye t-shirts, and using the hashtag "one love". But today, that is absolutely who he is. Spending time with Jonny, you instantly feel his chill demeanor, compassion, and positive energy. He started using instagram to share his juicing journey, and it has since grown into his livelihood, through the help of his adorable dog Noah. Today, our conversation is about juicing, and how this lifestyle has transformed him as a person, as well as his overall experience of life. I hope you enjoy the conversation, and I’m sure you’ll feel his good vibes from wherever you are :) __ Follow Jonny: Instagram: @jonny_juicer YouTube: Jonny Juicer Facebook: Jonny Juicer

Adam Sud - Overcoming Drug Addiction, Food Addiction, and Type 2 Diabetes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:50:44

Adam Sud is a gem. He’s the type of person that you meet and can’t help but instantly love. The type of person who has explored his darkness, seen his rock bottom, and been humbled and strengthened by that experience. He is open in his vulnerability, in ways that invite you in and let you know that you, too, can build yourself back up, no matter how low you feel. Adam is the everyman, but also such a shining inspiration. Just a few years ago, Adam was struggling with both a drug addiction and type 2 diabetes. Today he is one of the most holistically healthy individuals you’ll meet. Adam’s story is about recovery and resilience. It is powerful and moving, and I hope that it will help you to see the light and untapped potential for healing that you, too, have within. --- Follow Adam: Facebook: Plant-Based Addict Instagram: @plantbasedaddict

Dr. Garth Davis - What Causes Obesity, What Makes Us Healthy, and Why Protein Is Overrated | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:06:01

Dr. Garth Davis is a bariatric surgeon in Houston, Texas. He’s the author of the book Proteinaholic, and he sometimes refers to himself as an "angry vegan" because he’s so fed up with the way that most Americans eat, and the way that the medical field and nutrition field--and society in general--promote this way of eating, causing people to experience unnecessary sickness in their lives. Thankfully, he uses these feelings of frustration to motivate him to do so much service. You might think that it doesn’t make sense to be interested in lifestyle medicine and also be a bariatric surgeon, but he has a perspective that I think will resonate with you. Garth has done extensive research on nutrition, and doing so has lead him to make many long Facebook rants (which he has since retired from posting) always backed up by dozens of peer-reviewed research studies, but also to preach the importance of plant-based nutrition in his daily medical practice, and eventually write the book Proteinaholic. Today, we talk about all of this. At his core, Dr. Garth Davis is not an angry person. It just hurts to see the world hurting, especially when you feel you have information that could save so many lives. Garth has a heart full of compassion, and truly wants the best for everyone. After this conversation, I hope you have a better idea of what leads to obesity, why you can stop worrying about protein, and why a plant-based diet is the best choice if you want to lead a healthy life. __ Find Garth: Facebook: Dr. Garth Davis Instagram: @drgarthdavis Twitter: @drgarthdavis His book: proteinaholic.com

Dr. Robert Ostfeld - Healing Hearts in the Bronx and Beyond | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:16:46

Dr. Robert Ostfeld is a cardiologist, the founder and director of the Cardiac Wellness Program at Montefiore, an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the Associate Director of the Cardiology Fellowship at Montefiore. I first met Rob during my time working with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and through our multiple interactions (and also just both being totally passionate and nerdy about plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine) we have become good friends. I am continuously inspired by Rob and the work that he does. I’ll let you hear the stories from him, but he’s done a LOT to help people prevent and reverse their heart disease, and in one of the biggest hospital systems in New York City, no less! The momentum of his projects just keep perpetually building. When you see that he did his schooling at upenn and yale, and his residency at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital, you know that he’s a smart dude. But he’s also a compassionate, and very funny guy as well. I know you’ll love him as much as i do. Get ready to get inspired! __ Follow Rob: Twitter: @drostfeld Facebook: Robert Ostfeld Instagram: @drostfeld Montefiore Cardiac Wellness Program: http://www.montefiore.org/cardiacwellnessprogram

Amanda Sevilla - Getting Back Her Period, Body Positivity, Self-Love, and Nutrition Musings | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:46:46

Amanda Sevilla is a nutrition student at Loma Linda University, which is where I will be starting grad school in the Fall. You may know amanda as "applesandamandas" on YouTube and Instagram, where she’s really active in promoting a plant-based diet. Amanda is great for lots of reasons, but what I wanted to talk to her about in particular is her experience with getting her period back after dealing with an eating disorder. It is sadly somewhat common for young girls to lose their period (amenorrhea when they begin eating a plant-based diet. For Amanda, this happened not when she made that dietary change, but as an effect of her previous eating disorder. However, that too is a relatable experience for many people, myself included. We also ended up delving into some specific nutrition talk, covering topics like iron, protein, calcium, the importance of focusing on whole foods rather than specific nutrients, etc. When you put two nutrition nerds together, it’s bound to happen. Here's the thing, though: I want to make a disclaimer that this is more of a conversation than an interview. Listening back through the recording, I cringe at how much i took over that conversation at times--so much so that I questioned whether i should even post this. But I do think Amanda’s story is one that will resonate with many people, and it’s an important topic. So I’m sharing it despite these downsides to the recording. (Amanda, I am sorry. I will record another interview with you again in the future, and showcase YOU in the spotlight more - i know how much you have to share!) This is a learning process, I am learning, and I will be better in the future. I hope you gain something from our exchange.

Sam Lallas - Healing Crohn's Disease with a Raw Vegan Diet | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:26

After suffering from stomach problems for her entire childhood, Sam was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when she was 14 years old. She was put on a “white diet”—the standard protocol for people suffering from Crohn’s and other digestive disorders—which consisted of white, fiberless foods like white bread, sugary cereals, egg whites, etc. She also began taking over a dozen prescription medications aimed to relieve her of the painful symptoms she was experiencing. This protocol helped Sam to feel better, and to be able to live a “normal” life (in which she didn’t need to spend half the day in the bathroom). But it didn’t make her feel particularly great, and it also didn’t do anything to HEAL the disease—it simply abated the symptoms. After years of eating and living this way, she started playing around with her diet and eventually found veganism, and then finally raw veganism. Most doctors would say that eating fruits and vegetables is a suicidal act for your digestive health if you have Crohn’s disease—these foods are FULL of fiber! But she had faith in what she was doing and followed that trust, truly giving the diet a try. Within weeks, she started noticing big differences in the way that she felt. Within a few months, she was completely symptom free and was eventually able to stop taking all of her medications. She has an amazing story. And the best part is that I truly believe it’s just the beginning. I’m excited to share this conversation. It’s the first that I ever recorded for the podcast! I know that I have grown a lot in my interviewing skills since recording this, so the perfectionist in me is a little upset about that. But I still want to share it. We all have to start somewhere! And honestly, there’s a lot of really good content in this conversation, and Sam’s story deserves to be shared far and wide! So here you go. I hope you enjoy it! Get in touch with Sam!  Dr. Michelle McMacken - Woman on a Mission, Powered by a Passion for Plant-Based Nutrition | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:19

Michelle McMacken, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician and an assistant professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine. An honors graduate of Yale University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, she has more than ten years of experience practicing primary care, directing a medical weight-loss program, and teaching doctors-in-training at Bellevue Hospital Center in NYC. Michelle is an amazing human being. This was the first time that she and I had really sat down to have a full conversation, and I instantly fell in love with her enthusiasm for, and dedication to, spreading a message of health to those in need. In this podcast, we talk about how she first began promoting plant-based nutrition to her patients, and why she is committed to educating patients, medical students, and doctors about the power of healthy eating and lifestyle modification. Michelle works with a unique population, and has been impressively successful in her work - not only with her own patients, but also in getting her colleagues to embrace the healing power of plant-based nutrition as well. I had a lot of fun sharing in this conversation with Michelle - you will probably be able to tell. She has a vibrant energy about her that is infectious, and she's such a source of knowledge, compassion, and enthusiasm. I hope you enjoy it and are inspired by the work that she does - I most certainly was! To follow or contact Michelle: instagram @veg_md twitter @veg_md
