Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Clayton Beerman and Kelvin Barker, author of 'Celery: Representing Chelsea in the '80's' to look back at the 1983-84 season. Having escaped relegation to Division 3 by the skin of their teeth the previous season, manager John Neal makes big changes bringing in Eddie Niedzwiecki, Pat Nevin, Joe McLaughlin, Nigel Spackman and Kerry Dixon to shake things up. Neal's new look Blues make an immediate impact with a 5-0 win against promotion rivals Derby County and the rest as they say, is history, as Chelsea embark on one of the most memorable seasons in the their history. Matches against Brighton, Fulham, Newcastle, Swansea, Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff, the 5-0 against Leeds at home to confirm promotion and then Grimsby away to clinch the title live long in the memory. Along the way, 34 goals from Kerry Dixon, Pat Nevin's wizardry on the wing, Mickey Thomas buzzing around everywhere and Joe McLaughin and Colin Pates calm leadership from the back combined to give Chelsea fans one of the most entertaining seasons of all time, with great free flowing and attacking football. "The Boys in Blue in Division Two, but we won't be here for long!" In John Neal's second season in charge, Chelsea are still in Division 2 and the supporters as ever are optimistic of a swift return to Division 1. However, after a promising start, Chelsea sleep walk toward relegation to Division 3. It all boils down to the penultimate match against Bolton at Burnden Park; arguably the most important match in Chelsea's history. Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Dan Silver to look back at the 1981-82 season. With John Neal now ensconced as Chelsea manager, can he lead the team back to Division One or was this to be a more transitional season? So it proved, although in many ways a typical Chelsea season of the time with the infamous 6-0 thrashing away to Rotherham being balanced by knocking then European Champions Liverpool out of the FA Cup. All set against a background of ferocious football violence leading to the attempt to ban Chelsea fans ("You Can;t Ban a Chelsea Fan") and the club so broke it couldn't pay the players! Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Kelvin Barker to look back at the 1980-81 season. Kelvin Barker writes for cfcuk and is the author of 'Celery: Representing Chelsea in the 80's', the definitive book on Chelsea in the 1980's and 'Chelsea Here; Chelsea There' about Chelsea's first match back in Division One in 1984 against Arsenal at Highbury. Chelsea enter a new decade stuck in Division Two and with a new manager, World Cup hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst. Will some of his magic rub off on his Chelsea players and help them to get back to Division One? Another up and down season follows with the 6-0 win against Newcastle United early in the season a highlight, but after Christmas we were singing "All we are saying, is give us a goal" as Chelsea endured their worst goal drought ever, scoring in only 3 of their last 22 matches. Signing Alan Mayes certainly did not help!
