Mountain Bike Design – Behind the Scenes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:29

On this week’s episode, I’m chatting mountain bike design with Aaron Kerson and Adam Hammerman from PNW Components. These guys have got a lot of experience in the industry, working for brands like Specialized and Marin before getting together at PNW. We sat down to find out what goes on behind the scenes to bring us the amazing products that we get to ride. We chat about the difference between engineering and design, the stages that products go through before they get to us, what happens when it goes wrong, and how something as simple as product finish can affect how it performs. This is an area that doesn’t get spoken about that much, and I hope you enjoy finding out more. Hit play and give this episode a listen. Check out PNW’s April fool’s video here. You can join their mailing list at the bottom of their homepage here. You can listen to my previous episode with Aaron here. This episode of the podcast is supported by PNW Components. I’ve been using a PNW dropper post and their fabulous Loam Lever remote for a year and they have been absolutely faultless, which makes them the only dropper set up I’ve ever had that hasn’t caused me any issues at all in that time period! They have recently launched their new Rainier dropper which has lots of adjustability and a shorter overall length, allowing you to maximise your drop. Check out what they have to offer at www.pnwcomponents.com and for you lucky Downtime listeners you get 15% off during May using the code ‘pnwdowntime‘ at the checkout. We are going LIVE again on Wednesday 20th May with coach to the stars, Chris Kilmurray from Point1Athletic. You can watch the chat and ask your own questions by heading to youtube.com/downtimemountainbikepodcast at 8pm BST.  Talking Tech with Fabien Barel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:59

Fancy a bit of tech talk with one of the most tech-savvy mountain bike racers of all time? Well it’s finally here, the part 2 of my conversation with Fabien Barel. Last time we spoke (listen to part 1 here) we covered the more emotional and psychological side of mountain biking, so this time I thought we should get technical. Fabien has always been a rider who likes to get into the detail of things, and so when you ask his opinion on something, you know that it’s been well researched and thought out. We talk about how far ahead of the game they were with the Sunn team in the 90s, and why that level of technological progression wasn’t seen for a good while during the 2000s. We get Fabien’s thoughts on longer geometry, mixed wheel size bikes, and tyre insert too. So if you want some technical insight then you need to hit play and give this episode a listen. You can follow Fabien on Instagram @fabienbarel This episode of the podcast is supported by PNW Components. We Are One have been big supporters of what I’m doing from the start, and for that I’m really grateful. They also make amazing carbon fibre wheels which are hand made in Canada, and have recently added their DaPackage bar and stem to their line up. They hooked me up with a set of Agent 29er wheels which I’ve had on my bike for nearly 2 years now, and I literally haven’t had to touch them. They have remained tight and true through 2 years of use, and are an absolute joy to ride. They track and hold a line amazingly well, but aren’t punishingly stiff like some carbon wheels I’ve tried. They’ve got a whole line up of wheels, so there is always something to suit your needs. Head to weareonecomposites.com and check out what they have to offer.  World Cups and Coronavirus – with Eliot Jackson & Neko Mulally | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:46

Coronavirus has already taken out the first World Cup round of the year, and it looks like rounds 2 and 3 are going to follow. I was scheduled to record a pre-season show with Eliot Jackson and Neko Mulally, and we decided that even though there was no racing taking place in the near future, it would be great to have some race focussed content for you lot to listen to. So we hopped on a call this Saturday, had a good catch up, and chatted 2020 World Cup racing. Who know’s when the racing will start, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about and be excited by it! I hope you enjoy listening. This month, We Are One Composites are back to support the podcast. We Are One have been big supporters of what I’m doing from the start, and for that I’m really grateful.  Making a Movie – Robbie Meade | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:51

Alright, this week I’m joined by Robbie Meade. Robbie spent most of the 2019 season following the downhill, enduro and cross country teams from Trek Factory Racing around the globe, and documenting their season for a new feature film from Trek called ‘Going In’. That film will be dropping in the next few days over on Red Bull TV, so keep an eye out for that. It’s a great watch, giving some behind the scenes insight to the racing calendar. At the end of last year, I sat down with Robbie to find out more about how he went from full time builder to full time filmer, and how his career led to making this movie. We chat about what goes into a project like this, from concept, through filming, editing, and getting it out into the world. I have to admit that I never realised how much work something like this really is. Head to the player below and give it a listen. If you want to follow Robbie, then you’ll find him on Instagram @robbie_meade This month, We Are One Composites are back to support the podcast.  Misspent Summers – James McKnight | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:08

Alright, this week I’m joined by James McKnight. Along with his business partner Ben Winder, and a host of amazingly talented designers, photographers and writers, James runs Misspent Summers and is responsible for putting out the awesome Downhill yearbook, Hurly Burly, and the equally great EWS yearbook, The World Stage. James is a passionate mountain biker who has really let that passion take control of his life, and as you’ll hear from this interview, it has very much shaped his career. From the early days as a seasonnaire in Morzine, through finding his feet in the world of journalism, his time at the legendary Dirt magazine, and on to the creation of Misspent Summers, James’ story is one that shows what you can achieve when you let your passion guide you. If you want to experience James and the team’s work for yourself, then as a downtime listener you can get 10% off anything from their bookstore by heading to misspentsummers.com and using the code ‘downtime‘ at the checkout before 15th March 2020. To listen to James’ story, just scroll down to the player below.  An Operating System For Going Fast – Ian Warby of Firecrest MTB | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:31:59

This week I’m joined by someone who has put a huge amount into the sport, opening one of the first UK bike parks, supporting the creation of many others, and offering a forward thinking coaching service for over 20 years. Ian Warby of Firecrest MTB has been a super fan of the sport for a long time, and was racing at a high level before downhill even became a thing. Over the years he has raced at World Cup level, built a bike park, created an ever developing coaching system, and generally just poured his heart and soul into the sport that we all love. We chat about his background, what it took to get the bike park off the ground, and get into some of the detail behind his coaching system, which was inspired by Bruce Lee! The way that Ian looks at coaching like a computer operating system is really interesting, and I definitely learned some things to take away and try in order to improve my own riding. I hope that you get something out of it too… hit play below and give it a listen. You can find out more about Ian and Firecrest MTB at firecrestmtb.com, on Instagram @firecrest_mtb and on Facebook @FirecrestMTB The podcast needs your help, so if you want to support the podcast and help me keep it going, then there are two options.  Combining Your Passions – Euan Speirits | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:08

This week, I’m joined by Euan Speirits. Euan is a 4x racer and a doctor who has managed to combine his love of riding and medicine to help provide racers with the level of care that he feels they deserve, and an area that certainly feels lacking in racing today. We chat about his background in riding, how Gee Atherton led him to setting up Action Sports Medical, and how he intends to support racers. We also talk a lot about concussion and Euan gives us some help on what to look out for. This episode is a bit different, but I think it’s really important for the sport that we talk more about the medical side of things, and work towards ensuring that we have the right support in place for those who are risking it to make competition as great as it is. So give it a listen in the player below. You can follow Euan on Instagram @actionsportsmedical and you can find more information on concussions over on Euan’s website actionsportsmedical.com The podcast needs your help, so if you want to support the podcast and help me keep it going, then there are two options. This week, I’m joined by Sean Leader. Sean has been a driving force behind developing the riding scene on the east coast of America, and along with Neko Mulally is the man behind Windrock Bike Park. We sat down to find out more about Sean’s own race career where he competed at a high level in many disciplines, we chat about how investing has helped him live the kind of lifestyle he wants, what it took to build the track for the Snowshoe world cup and plenty more.
