Ending the injustice of commercial sexual exploitation requires a response. In this episode Benjamin and Laila talk about the internal responses of love and compassion, and how those two things are central to changing the status quo.
Gene McConnell is the founder and president of Authentic Relationships International, a non-profit organization dedicated to liberating people from toxic influences and beliefs. For over 31 years, he has trained therapists, pastors, law enforcement, medical professionals, and others about domestic violence, sexual abuse, shame, and building and maintaining healthy relationships. Gene’s real life experience of brokenness and recovery has positioned him to develop highly successful programs that have helped hundreds face and overcome sexual addiction and relational brokenness. His program, The Power of Pornography, has been presented to over 80,000 college students across the country. As a sought-after speaker and program leader, Gene has been interviewed as a subject expert on several nationally televised talks shows like Montel Williams and others. His work has helped many men and women to escape the sex industry.
When fighting exploitation there are a variety of actions one can take. There are external responses and internal ones. Internal responses deal with one’s own heart posture and behaviors. Kajsa Ekis Ekman is a Swedish journalist, author, and expert on the issue of prostitution and trafficking. She is the author of “Being and Being Bought: Prostitution, Surrogacy and the Split Self,” which has been translated into French and English. She lectures across the world on sex trafficking and prostitution, and is a regular contributor for the Guardian, TruthDig and Feminist Current. Kajsa lives in Sweden. Rachel Moran is a survivor and leader in the abolition movement. She is the author of the book Paid For: My Journey Through Prostitution and is also the founder of the organization SPACE International (Survivors of Prostitution-Abuse Calling for Enlightenment). Rachel has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in creative writing and speaks globally on prostitution and sex-trafficking. She lives in Dublin, Ireland.
