Never Give Up Hope | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:21

Just a brief reminder, I’d like to add a couple of things, very little things added to what was already said and much of what I am planning to say has already been brought by Abdul Nasir Jangda, so, I gonna keep this speech short and hope every speech I say. “I gonna make it short and not gonna be extra-long but I think I actually needed this time, I think. Only time will tell, have hope. So the first thing I wanna share with you guys is just some recommendation after this topic is done. When you get time on your own, there’s something I want you guys to watch on YouTube. The professor’s name is Professor HESHAM AL-AWADI, he has an hour long lecture on NOT LOSING HOPE and I think it’s one of the best presentations of the topic I ever heard personally. I’ll show you some of the things from that video and I’ve changed some things from his talk … but I think while watching this video, it’s wise taking notes also. It’s just personally very beneficial for Muslims, I think. It’s just … even for your family to hear… but I advise you guys to hear it yourself seriously especially the Arabic ……in sha Allahu Wa Ta’ala and try to discuss some of those things on your own with your kids instead of sneaking them in front of the TV screen or computer screen and let them hear the video that they want. So one is here a couple of things in terms of … something that students of the Prophet , the best students of the Prophet , the companions . Something they just understood about sins, something that they are very clear about and we nowadays are not getting clear about and I wanna just wanna literate them so we can refresh ourselves and our attitudes in terms of sin. The first thing is when you and I sin, we’re disappointed with ourselves. That’s a matter of fact. I mean if you have any ounce of decency left in you, when you do something wrong at the end of the day, you go back and you say, “How could I do that?” Now you lost hope in yourself in some respect and that’s what disappointment by definition is. You lost hope in yourself and you ask yourself: “How could have I done such a thing?” That’s natural, it’s normal. It’s not something bad to be disappointed in yourself. It’s not something bad to be sad about your sin ….. It’s actually a gift from Allah , because you still have a conscience. But…that disappointment will never confuse…you never confuse it and allow that disappointment that they lost hope in themselves. They are not confident in themselves anymore. They did not let that become … by itself, Allah has hope over you. Just because I don’t have hope in myself doesn’t mean Allah doesn’t have hope in me; or Allah does not expect more from me; or Allah Himself is disappointed in me. He didn’t ….. for that. Because if you’ve given up on yourself, a Muslim knew, he understood certain qualities of Allah that are permanent. You know our feelings and our temperaments; they go up and down. We have good deeds and we have bad deeds,

 Controlling Anger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:37

Dua Passage narration from the Quran (Surah Luqman 17-19) Ya bunayya Aqimissalata wa’mur blimaroofi wanha anil munkari wasbir ala maa asabaka Inna zalika min azm il umoor. Wala tusa’ir khaddaka linnasi wala tamshi filardi marahan InnaALlah la yuhibbu kulla mukhtalin fakhoor. Waqsid fi Mashyika waghdud min sautika Inna ankaral aswaati lasautul hameer Dua In Sha Allah Taala in today’s reminder I’d like to share some thoughts with you that I hope to benefit from myself and hope that they are of benefit to all of you as well in regards to a very dangerous, and at the same time a very natural, sentiment all of us have and that is Anger. Anger is very natural. It’s not an unnatural sentiment for you to be angry. There are many occasions that make you angry and make me angry. Sometimes those things are small and sometimes they are big. But this feeling is rooted in something else. It’s rooted in something else and if it’s not rooted in something healthy it can become very dangerous. It’s really a symptom of a much larger disease. I chose this passage to share with you because this is a passage in which Luqman Razi Allaho Anho is giving advice to his son and there are other occasions in the Quran where a father is talking to his son. Yaqoob ah talks to his sons you know “ya bunayya___” . gives advice to his sons also. So this idea of a father giving advice to his son is not unique in the Quran. It’s something Allah iterates multiple times. So it’s something you should pay attention to. And if you think of this picture, you see them, an older man of wisdom, Allah has given him wisdom “wa laqad aataina Luqman Al hikmah” he’s giving advice to his young and you can call inexperienced son. A lot of us are in the position. A lot of you got older and you try and give advice to your son and you’ll notice something. As you get older and wisdom kicks in or if you are fortunate enough to benefit from wisdom, what it brings also is patience. And what you’ll notice in your sons, in your young men that are growing up is impatience. And they are repulsing. They get angry very easily. So one of the very important pieces of advice for a young man to get from someone who has wisdom above him like his father is for him to calm down, to keep himself in check, to control himself. So with that in mind, you’re keeping in mind that this is a father giving advice to his son, let’s see some of the things he tells him to do. First, “Ya bunayya aqeemis salat” “my son, establish salat” and the word salah interestingly, this is of course preIslamic conversation, pre the Messenger of Allah SAW, so this salah is not just using the official sense of five daily prayers. That was given to our Messenger Alaihi salatu wassalam. Every messenger was given their own form of salah and finally the perfection of it is in our Messenger’s Sunnah (SAW). But in the original sense what the word salah comes from is “sila” which means “connection”. Maintain a connection with Allah. You know, practically this discussion from father to son this counsel began with “la yushriku billah” “do not do shirk with Allah”. Don’t associate partners with Allah. Don’t do the ultimate crime of distancing yourself from Allah by putting someone else between yourself and Allah. That’s shirk. And practically, to not do shirk. Practically. Not just theoretically, philosophically, ideologically. Practically to not do shirk one has to be connected to Allah and not connected to anything else. And the device, the mechanism by which a believer gets connected to Allah is salat itself. It literally protects our Tawheed. This salat, this connection with Allah. It doesn’t let anybody else come in between. When you and I are making salah it’s just us in conversation with Allah Azza wa jal directly. Allah azza wa jal responding to every part of the Fatiha that we recite. It’s a direct method. Aqeemis salat

 Importance of Jumu'ah(Friday) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:09

Assalamualaikum! In sha Allahu ta’ala in today’s brief khutba I would like to share with you some reflections from Suratul Jum’a. I chose this Sura on purpose because a lot of times actually most of the times Muslims we come to jum’a over and over again and very few times we get an opportunity to talk about what makes jum’a itself and the prayer, itself, important. And even when we have a conversation about why it is important most of the time we have the conversation in terms of how to make the most of your Friday in terms of the practices of the Messenger Sallellahu Alaihe wa sallam of the morning, the night before, what part of the Quran to recite, how we should try and get to the prayer earlier, all of those other kinds of etiquette of the prayer itself. And that is important but that’s not what I want to share with you today. What I want to share with you today-is the spirit, the wisdom. And really the fundamental strategy of Allah aza auzal in pulling this program inside the Muslim community and making it a permanent feature of the Muslim community. I want to start with a very simple observation. You know, Muslims all over the world, they have halaqa, they have study circles, they have conferences and programs just like what we do here in the United States. And when we do, we have to advertise those programs. We have to make announcements, tell people to come, there is gonna be a program in the evening, there’s gonna be a program on the weekend. Now a days we have to put the facebook page up and twitter and mass e-mail. May be make YouTube videos to get the word out etc.etc Whatever means we can we advertise programs, even if they are religious in nature, we advertise them. Here’s one program every single week on Friday afternoon that you don’t get any e-mail or you don’t get any text message, you don’t have to mark it in your calendar. It doesn’t matter how religious you are or you are not religious at all. May be there are some of you in the audience, you don’t know this place, this masjid or any masjid for that matter except for Friday afternoon. That’s the only time you see this place. But you don’t have to be told. You just come on your own. And that’s something incredible. That the Muslim Ummah all together, it gathers on this day without invitation. Without even reminder. We have been programmed, Subhan Allah, the very knowledgeable of us and not the very knowledgeable of us , the extremely committed and practicing of us and those who are far from deen also a good majority of them as well show up on this day. And you will notice a bigger community gathers and some of them even lost their way even on jumma, you will see them on their Eid prayer, right? You will those people that you don’t see any other time of the year. But regardless I wanna focu on Friday. There is something Allah put inside this day. And this gathering in specific. That’s very important. And you know the Arab spring is not too old now, and it’s something that is still taking place and you guys are hearing in the news all the time. You know one of the scariest times for regimes, was right after jum’a as salah! Because they knew automatically people are gonna be gathered in all the Masajid any way so as they are leaving they are gonna give more momentum to the protest and more people will be out on the streets. So the things that will terrify the regimes, was salatul jum’a! Think about that. Because they knew this is time when the Muslims will show their strength, their numbers, you know! But what is the spirit of this particular day? And this activity itself that gives its power, this communal activity that all of us have the blessing to enjoy week after week after week.

Why And How To Give Advice? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:40

Could not get what was said before this as the Al-Qur’an was being read 0:52 Dedication is important, u know that is important, yes I know it is important. But does she take it on time or no? I have to call, I have to go, I have to make sure she takes it, because, something’s missing. I know this is good. It’s different. Than saying I know that this is something I have to do, I must do it, I don’t have a choice. Allah didn’t just teach Lukman (RA) that he should be grateful to Allah, tone coloro show gratitude. Showing gratitude is one thing, He understands that It’s an Amal, I have to do it, in everything that I do in life I have to show gratitude to Allah. It must invade all of my action, all of my thoughts, all of them have to be tinted with one thing, in one color and that’s the color of being grateful to Allah. I have to find excuses to thanks Allah, in everything I do. And, so when we read this advice that Lukman is giving his son, you must to understand that I must remind myself, he is not trying to benefit anybody else first, he is trying to be grateful to Allah. And what we learn from that is when you and I try to help our own family, when the father is in audience, trying to help their sons, when the brother is trying to help another brother, the first motivation of dad is that to help your brother. The first motivation for me is to be grateful to Allah. It’s not about someone else, it’s about me first. I’m doing it only because, I want to show first and foremost gratitude to Allah. This is an idea I will come back to towards to end of my khutba, because the end of this advice is tied to this concept. You might think it’s a very simple thing, but it can get very complicated very fast and we can lose sight of it very easily. So I take you towards the tail end of this advice. “Ya Bunayya Akhimi Salah”, you heard these words a thousand times, “My beloved son, the son that I love”, Yabni in Arabic or Yabna even, “Ya Bunayya” “My beloved son, my dear son” Its like he is giving him a hug, patting him on the back, showing him love and then saying “Son, Listen”, you know a lot of times fathers give sons advice, actually, fathers all that they do is give sons advice. Right? Your son calls you on the phone and all he gets is “Did you do this? Did you do that? Did you finish this? Did you finish that? How come you didn’t do this? How come you didn’t do that? Ok I gotta go” Right? Your son is not even like calling you anymore because all that he hears is advice on the other end. Right? A lot of times especially as sons get older, they have a hard time talking to their dad because dad is always correcting them and they have, you know, young men, they have short tempers, so there is always a tension between father and son. All the time. All the time. So this father is wise right, right? Allah told this in the beginning, he taught him wisdom, part of his wisdom is when he talks to his son, he talks to him with love. How many fathers here that have teenage boys, that talk to their boys with love, that talk to them in a loving fashion that they are not threatened, allright, here he goes again, he is going to start his lecture again, I know what’s coming now, I see that look on his face, completely disarms his son. He says, “Ya Bunayya” there is a difference between say “hey, go read salath, its Maghrib time”, he says, “hey son, come here, you know its Maghrib time, lets pray together”, there is a difference in tone isn’t it? What is hard in the heart, he will say “ok fine, I will pray because you are telling me to” and other will say “ya you are right dad, I should pray lets go to the masjid together. Different results. Different results entirely. So he says “Ya Bunayya Akhimi Salath” And I will just give you one of the Fawaidh, One of the benefits of salath that are part of this conversation. You know, Our salawath our prayers, literally the Arabic word salath is from silah which is to ...

Chronicles of the Sahaba in their Youth | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:14

Salaamu alaykom wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu. In shaa Allah, I’d like to share with you a few section of the Qur’an, and instead of sharing with you detailed accounts of a number of sahaba, I’ll share with you the accounts of one particular sahabi that we can draw specific lessons from in shaa Allah. But before I do, I’d like to share with you another type of sahabi; a different type of companion, not one that’s a role model, but one that you would look down upon. We find in the Qur’an another messenger mentioned, and his companions mentioned in detail. And the amazing thing is, because these are people that have passed, Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) speaks to the sons of Israel at the time of Mohammad (ﷺ), but He speaks to them in second person: “wadthkuru”, and “na’amat Allahi ‘alaykom”, “idth ja’atkom Musa bil bayinaat” - “when Musa came upon YOU”. Now notice, he didn’t come upon ‘them’, who did he come on? He came on their forefathers. But He speaks of them in the second person only to make it highlighted, just as Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) speaks to those who have iman: “ya ayuhaladhina aamanu” is also in second person – “O those of you who believe”. So all of those ayat you find in second person, particularly in surah Al-Baqarah. And so I’d like to begin with the negative and move towards the positive, in shaa Allah ta’ala. For all of us, we have not seen Mohammad Rasool Allah (ﷺ), and for the sahaba that were seeing him, they had not seen Allah. They had not seen miracles from the sky, or anything supernatural, save a few of them who saw some particular incidents that we can pinpoint. But for these specific companions of Musa (‘alayhee salaat wa salaam), imagine this; you’re about to be executed by a tyrant ruler, you’re lost in the desert with this man who promises that he can save you, and you’re crying to him saying, ‘you lied to us – here the army is coming upon us to destroy us and you brought us in the middle of this desert to be slaughtered like sheep!’, and he strikes his staff and a body of water parts, and you walk right through it. If you were an atheist before, or if you were just tagging along for the ride before, thinking, ‘hey, maybe he’s right, maybe he’s wrong, I’ll take my chances. If I stay in Egypt, then for sure I’ll be slaughtered”. So notice in the Qur’an, Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) doesn’t say “wallannu’mina bika” – Bani Israel don’t say ‘we’re not gonna believe you’, they say “wallannu’mina laka”, “nu’minu bee”, and “nu’mina la”. Big difference…“nu’minu bee” is “to believe in”, to confirm that he brought the truth. “Nu’minu la” in the Arabic terminology refers to “to accept” – “we’ll go along with what you’re saying”. The same thing Firaun said to Musa (‘alayhee salaam). He said, ‘I’m not gonna let them go’, and he said, “walannu’mina laka”. The chiefs of Firaun said, ‘we’re not gonna accept what you’re saying. Your demands are to let these people go, we’re not gonna accept what you’re saying’. Their statement wasn’t, ‘we’re not gonna believe in you’ – they had already given that as a statement before, ‘we’re not gonna believe in you no matter what’. So the point was now to accept what he’s saying, to follow him. So among the Bani Israel there are those who might have been in doubt: ‘maybe this guy’s crazy, maybe he’s right, maybe he’s wrong, why not take our chances, because for sure we’re gonna die here’. They go, they see a body of water part, they pass right through it, and that Firaun – who they saw people make sajda to, that armies used to crumble before him – they saw him perish before their own eyes. So if nothing else made you believe in Allah before that, and if it didn’t make you take Musa (‘alayhee salaam) seriously before that, I would think this incident would open your eyes, right? This is a pretty big thing to watch, to see a body of water just open up!

Characteristics of Believers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:27

Characteristics of Believers (DUAs and praise to Allah) I am sure, if you have probably heard the reminder about the Ayahs that start of the beautiful Surah Al Muhminoon (23rd Surah of the Quran) very famous words What I wanted to use this rare opportunity that I have and I personally feel am very honoured to be here Allahomdolia and have the opportunity to speak to you and the first sentiment that I wanted to share with you before I share the remainder of the Ayahs is that I don’t feel like a stranger. When you walk into the house of Allah this is a bond that Allah has created between Muslims. Once they share that bond is thicker than blood. So you feel home and one you enter the house of Allah you say Asalam and they say Asalam back. You smile on their face and they smile back. You fulfil the Sunnah of Prophet (PBUH) and they fulfil their part. You know at that point there is tranquillity in our house and there is a unity that does not needs to be talked about it. You don’t have to give speeches about it, you have to feel it in your heart. May Allah put that genuine kind of sincere unity in all of our hearts and remove itch feeling, remove harshness, remove Jealousy, anger and frustration judgments between each other. May Allah remove those tabas and really make us a true brother hood. Allah (SWT) said in the Surah Ayah. . Those who know or are familiar with Arabic is used to emphasis on something. That is also use to say and communicate the meaning of already. So whatever is going to be said is already the case. That is not like that it is going to be the case, it already the case. Then Allah uses a word in particular for success . Before we go further a really shallow translation would suggest. True believers have already attained success or they have already succeeded. That a very particular flavour of success is what mentioned in the Ayah and word is related to the Arabic term (the farmer) and the farmer in Arabic has interestingly tons of words, lots of words that depict the farmer, because farming was so very important to the Arabs that most of their region was not really something that you grow anything on, so the few places that you can grow something on are very very important. Incidentally, things that were really important to the Ancient Arabs had a lot of words for them. Like the sword, there a lot of words for the swords, so the farmer of farming has lot of terminologies surrounding this process. Like Agriculture that sustain the entire region. At the end of the farming season, harvest season when the farmer is finally done with his labour and sees the crops are tall and harvest are tall. He is going to go and is going to cut all of his labour down. He is going to collect and is going to make his yearly income and the way we think of our income now a days we have jobs of most of us. We get paid weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. I don’t think anyone here gets a year, once pay cheque a year. No one has that situation but that’s what a farmer situation is. He puts the work in all year, he puts seed into the ground, he waters it, he begs for the rain, he moves his animals around the land then he hopes the insects don’t come and destroy his crops and frustration don’t happen or weeds don’t come in and he has to basically be on this high strong stressful labour; majority of the year. And finally, eventually at the end of the year he sees the fruits of his labour. By the way that’s not eventually happening in the Arab world, it’s what happening all over the world. If you see any agricultural society you find the same thing. When they get to the crops season, when they get to the season when they harvest, then they all have festival they all celebrate. They will decorate their entire villages they will be singing going on there going to be, Why; there going to be one pay cheque in the entire year. All that year labour in that one day, in that one week.

And when that is said, societal pressure, we usually think of bigger things but really it boils down to even those microscopic details in our life. Those of you that have children will notice your children want a certain toy & more than anything else sometimes they want that toy because someone else at school has it. They wanna get what somebody else has. That’s a formal societal pressure. Your children start getting a little bit older & they wanna dress a certain way & the idea of them wanting to dress that certain way didn’t come from their own imagination; it came from something they saw on TV that was defined to them as “THE WAY TO DRESS” or someone they saw dressed that way at school & is popular & that sort of becomes the defining thing for them & they wanna dress that way or look that way or buy that gadget or have a phone, little kids wanting to have a phone, right? “What you need a phone for?”, “I don’t know, my friends have it too, why can’t I have it?” You probably parents have heard that logic before, “they have it, why can’t I have it.” When you get a little bit older, the same societal pressure, it takes different forms. It can be something as simple as you parking your car at your office in the parking lot & your co-worker has a nicer car & you go “Man! I need to get ahead. Look at what these guys are driving.” You know, the neighborhood you live in, & you go visit one of your friend’s house who lives in a nicer neighborhood & the thought is running in your mind “Man! When am I gonna get to this point? I need to be where this guy is at or better.” We are always comparing ourselves to what other people have & we are constantly vying consciously or subconsciously to get what the other people have also. This is what I mean by societal pressure. Whether it comes in the form of you dressing, or it comes in the form of what you purchase, where you put your money, what kind of career you want to pursue. A lot of times our parents, they are giving this societal pressure, so whether their children are made for that or not, they will make sure they say to their children “You better become a medical doctor, because if you don’t, you are a failure in life.” Everybody else that are around as that are successful they are all doctors, so that’s the only thing in life to do. And I am not saying being a physician is a bad practice, but if your son or daughter becomes a doctor & they didn’t want to be,

Distinctions and Responsibilities of Muslim ummah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:00

“Walakal Hamdu.. (Dua)” On today’s brief khutbah, I would like to share with you a couple of reminders from the middle of surahtul Bakarah. These ayats are of particular interest to me and I believe to all muslims because they inaugurate us, they congratulate us from Allah that we have become a distinct nation, a distinct ummah. And before I get into those ayat where Allah congratulates us that we are a nation by ourselves, that we are an ummah by ourselves, with a unique identity, let me share with you what happens before these ayats come. Allah (az:) leads up to this argument, or this inauguration and before this there is lot of conversation in this beautiful surah. The main conversation before this is a long track record of Bani Israel. In suratul Bakarah Allah called out sons of Israel, He called them out. He started by saying, (othkurooniAAmatiya allatee anAAamtu AAalaykum waannee faddaltukumAAala alAAalameen - 2:122) “Make mention of my favor on you. and that I have given you preference over all other nations in the world. and if you are forgetting that favor, how about I remind you.” So Allah dedicates several passages in surahtul Bakarah reminding the Israelites what He has done for them time and time after time again. They messed up and Allah helped them out. They messed up again and Allah helped them out again and again and again. They even messed up with their messenger, they even started insulting their messenger, they even started questioning instruction of Musa (a:) in his face. They even said most obnoxious things like (lan nu’mina laka hatta naraAllaha jahra - 2:55) “We won’t believe anything that you have to say, we won’t accept any of your demands unless we see Allah face to face.” Imagine saying that to a messenger! Then they went further. Later on Allah (az:) mentions, when the word were given to them directly, a group among them, the leaders of Bani Israel were taken and they heard the words of Allah, and they were told directly by Allah (khuthooma ataynakum biquwwatin - 2:63) Allah held the mountain above them and told them hold on to whatever We have given you and take might, with all the strength you have, hold on the instruction of Tawrat that We are giving you. And then Allah mentions, that right after that they forgot, they turned around and they disobeyed. So Allah makes a list of crimes, a list of mistakes that Bani Israel made. Then after all of that Allah starts talking about Ibrahim (a:). After making a huge list of their errors, He starts talking about Ibrahim (a:). The question arises, why? You know one of the main reasons that the Jews of Medina didn’t accept the Prophet (s:) as the final messenger is because he was not from the children of Israel. He wasn’t from among them. And Allah makes the argument, Yes he is. because even your father is Ibrahim (a:) and this is also a son of Ibrahim (a:) and He takes us back to their common origin. He takes Bani Israel back to their common beginning. Because if you argue he is not from the family, well you are from the family of Ibrahim and so is he. So Allah takes them back to the origin. [6:00] Then Allah (az:) mentions what Ibrahim (a:) has told his son Ishac (a:), okey? and He said this to, what Ishac (a:) then told to his children (mataAAbudoona min baAAdee - 2:133) “What are you going to worship after I am gone? What are you going to obaying after I am gone?” And they said (naAAbudu ilahakawa-ilaha aba-ika ibraheema wa-ismaAAeelawa-ishaqa - 2:133) They said Ibrahim (a:), Ismail (a:) and Ishac (a:), the sons of Israel were being asked, Israel (a:) himself, Ya’qub (a:) by the way, his other name is Israel. He was asking his sons, what are you going to worship after I am gone? and his sons by the way you know what we call them, the sons of Israel, these are the original sons of Israel.

The Qur’an is incredible literature, incredible literature from many, many different angles. You could study this subject from many different points of view. Actually, I'm working on a seminar that's launching in February dedicated to each angle, each perspective from which we can study and appreciate the eloquence and the precision and beauty of the Qur’an. I'm only going to present probably three dimensions to you today of the twenty or so that I have compiled thus far. At least three dimensions I’ll try to present to you today in shaa` Allah. And the first of them is precision in word choice or accurate word choice. When you and I speak, we put words together but we don't necessarily give too much thought to each and every word we say. The central focus when we communicate isn't the words it's the actual idea. When you sit down and write something though then what do you do? You write something and you say: “No, I want to edit it. I want to say it better.” And you go back and you change a word or two or you reorganize your sentence, right? So writing is way more careful than what? Than speaking. Speaking is spontaneous. It's on the spot. There's no time to edit your words. It just comes out. But writing is very well thought-out because there's an editorial process. Now, we already said that the disbeliever says that the Qur’an is the speech of Muhammad while the believer knows that it's the speech of Allah. The speech of a human being is not necessarily calculated down to the word, it's not calculated down to the word. But the speech of Allah is perfect because it comes from a source that is perfect. And that is illustrated with hundreds of thousands of examples in the Qur’an. This is a subject in of itself - precision of words in the Qur’an. It's a subject in and of itself. I'll give you some very brief examples. Shu’ayb, ‘alayhi salyam , ‘alayhi salyam, , you know he's a messenger, right? Now, as a messenger , ‘alayhi salyam, he is mentioned numerous times in the Qur’an. Allah, ‘azza wa jal, says to us: “Wa ilyaa madyanaa akhaakhum Shu’ayba” – to madyans we sent their brother Shu’ayb. Now what I want to tell you is what is the name of the nation to which he belonged? Madyan. Now Madyan is the name of two things at the same time you gotta remember this, ok? Madyan is two things. Madyan is the name of a place and it's the name of the people. The people are called Madyan and the place is also called Madyan. And Allah says to Madyan we sent their brother Shu’ayb. In surat Shu’araa`, surah number 26, Allah, ‘azza wa jal, gives us the stories of different prophets. He says: “Idh qaala lahum akhuhum Lootun; idh qaala lahum akhuhum Saalihun; idh qaala lahum akhuhum Hoodun; idh qaala lahum akhuhum Noohun” – when their brother Nooh said to them; when their brother Nooh said to his nation. The next story goes to another prophet. When their brother Saalih said to them, to his own nation. Then it goes to Hood. When their brother Hood said to them. Then when their brother Saalih, Hood, Nooh, ‘alayhim salyam and Loot - four of them: their brother, their brother, their brother. The fifth one mentioned is Shu’ayb. Allah says when Shu’ayb said to them. He just says: “Idh qaala lahum Shu’aybun” – when Shu’ayb says to them. With all the other prophets in that very surah what did he say? Their brother Nooh, their brother Saalih, their brother Loot, their brother Hood. But when it came to Shu’ayb he said Shu’ab – no brother. What's really interesting is other places in the Qur’an Allah says: “Wa ilyaa Madyana”, like I told you, “Wa ilyaa Madyana akhaahum Shu’ayba” – to Madyana, especially, we sent their brother Shu’ayb. In the surah in which everybody was declared the brother of their nation you would expect that when Shu’ayb’s turn comes what are you gonna see? Their brother. But the word “brother” taken out. It's the only one that's been taken out. Everybody else retained and what we find that's really interesting is ...

NOUMAN ALI KHAN – DIVINE SPEECH PROLOGUE – PART I Our speaker today is Nouman Ali Khan. He is the head of Bayyinah Institute – the largest and fastest growing Arabic studies programme in the country. He has previously served as Islamic studies teacher at Muslim Center, chaplain for the Adelphi University, Arabic professor at Nassau community college and director of education at Masjidaru-l-Qur’an. Currently, brother Nouman is busy ensuring the growth and sustainability of Bayyinah which has crossed a 6000-students mark – alhamdulillah! He is involved in numerous translations and research projects all revolving around classic Arabic curriculum development, linguistic analysis and tafseer of the Qur’an. Brother Nouman’s understanding of the language and tafseer has been influenced by numerous scholars, scholarly resources: both classical and contemporary. He has retained his focus on the Qur’an related studies for a number of years and considers himself as an intermediate student of the language and a beginner student of the Qur’an. Without further due I would give you brother Nouman Assalyamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu Alhamdulillahi Rabbi-l-‘alameen, wa-S-Salyatu wa-s-salyam ‘ala ashrafi-l-anbiyai wa mursaleen wa ‘ala aalihi wa sahbihi wa maa nistanna bihi sunnatihi ilya yaumi-d-deen Allahumma j’alna minhum wa mina-l-ladheena aamanu wa ‘aamilu-S-Salihat wa tawasaw bi-l-Haqq wa tawasaw bi-S-Sabr.. amin ya rabbi-l-‘alameen Thumma amma ba’d fa a’uudhu biLlahi mina-sh-shayTaani rajeem Haadha balyaaghu li-n-nas wa li yundhiru bihi wa li yaghlamu annamaa ilaahun waaHid wa li yaddakara uulu-l-albaab Rabbi shrah lee Sadri wa yassirli amri wahlul ‘uqdatan min lisaani yafqahu qaulee Wa Allahumma thabitna ‘inda-l-maut bi la ilaha illa Allah.. amin ya rabbi-l-‘alameen I have a monumental task before me today to share with you in two parts – two parts of this presentation broken up with a break in the middle – a huge subject. And I was given a different title before and I requested it to be changed even though the subject is very similar. I was given the title “Miracles of the Qur’an” and that’s too big a title for me to handle. So I changed it to “Literary characteristics of the Qur’an” those of you who saw the advertising materials. There is a reason for which I’ve chosen this title and I’d like to share with you why in this introductory phase of my talk. I’ll center it around one thing. I’ve taken the Arabic portion, small portion of the ayah that I recited to you in the beginning: “haadha balyaaghu li-n-nas” – Allah speaks about the Qur’an. And he says: “This is a “balyaagh”, and I am not gonna translate that yet, it is a “balyaagh” for people, “balyaagh”. “Balyaagh” in Arabic means that which reaches someone else, a communication, a communicate. This Qur’an is meant to reach people. It is a message to people. Now, because Allah calls it a means of communication or a communicate, a message. I want to speak to you today first, about the essential components of communication. I want to keep this very-very simple. I am not going to try to bother you with heavy grammatical terms or Arabic terminology because that’s not my intention today. What I want you to be exposed to is this dimension of an appreciation of the Qur’an that is almost lost entirely upon people who are not students of the Qur’an and Arabic which is the majority of Muslims and, perhaps, all of mankind in addition. They don’t appreciate one dimension of the Qur’an that I’d like to highlight for you. When we communicate, there are essentially three components that you have to keep in mind. There are three aspects to communicating. The first of them is the speaker himself. You know, when I am talking to you there is already, before I even open my mouse, because of my appearance, my gender, my age, all of that which you see with your eyes,

7:171 "And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them, [and Allah said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allah." 7:171 ربي اشرح لي صدري ويسر لي أمري واحلل عقدة من لساني يفقهوا قولي. اللهم ثبتنا عند الموت بـ لا اله الا الله, امين يا رب العالمين. All of you have been reminded multiple times that Ramadan is approaching, and we cannot take enough precaution to take most advanage of this month. It's probabl a tragedy in all our lives that year after year we look back and say we could've done more. And so it's only apprppriate that we take this opportunity to remind ourselves and I remind myself that one of the greatest obstacles that comes before a person (a muslim) is taking full advantage of this month of forgiveness, this month of mercy, this month of blessings, this month of starting your life fresh, of a new beginning. That obstacle that lies before us, that is a personal obstacle, is the obstacle of Ghaflah, commonly described as heedlessness, but it's a little bit more. it's the attitude of doing something without realizing what you're doing. Not really thinking about what you're involved in. Not really thinking or caring about how you're time is spent, or what comes out of your mouth, or what actions you perform, or how your actions impact other people, or how they impact your own self, your own personality. This sickness is sickness of "Ghaflah". And you know if you reflect and I reflect on my own life, you'll find that sometimes we're making Salah but we're not really making Salah. Standing in front of Allah (azza wa jaal) we're reciting Quraan but we have no idea what we're doing, our mind is somewhere else. We are physically in prayer, but in our hearts we are Ghafil. We're completely heedless. And so it happens that we come in the month of Ramadan and we're fasting, yet we're not conscious of the fact that we're fasting. We're feeling hungry and we're feeling thirsty but at the same time we're in a state of Ghaflah. And this Ghaflah that Allah (azza wa jahl) mentions is in the hearts of people: "وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا" The messenger is told (PBUH) in this aya, talking about the disbelievers, the messenger is told not to listen to them, not follow them, not to pay attention to them. But instead of Allah (azza wa jal) saying ولا تطع المكذبن (don't follow the liers) or ولا تطع الكافرين (don't follow the disbelievers) or ولا تطع المشكرين. He doesn't say moshirkeen or kafireen, he uses a specific term for these disbelievers and he says: وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا 18:28 Don't follow the one whose heart we have made empty or void or made it neglect the rememberance of Allah and follows own pathetic empty desires.

The Legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:21

In shaa Allahu taala' tonight's topic is something that I feel very personally hurt about. By Allah's permission and His favor I have had the opportunity to travel to about 80 or so communities all over the United States in the last 5 years and I have made about 2 weeks stops in each community alhumdulillah. And I was the youth that was raised in New York and you know when you live in one place for a long time you kind of you don't know what is going on in the world outside of that little bubble of yours you know. So as I travelled a lot outside, in some ways it was a very eye opening experience in some respects it was something that I had never expected on the other side it the end was very positive. But at the other hand at the same time I came to observe that there are certain problems that the Muslim community has that it doesn't matter if they are in California or they are in Boston or they are in Texas or they are in Arkansas, they are the same. And one of those problems thats probably to me atleast the most pressing issue of all of the issues is the problem of how rapidly we are losing our youth. how rapidly we are losing connection with our kids. And in shaa Allahu taala in this talk though I want to start with the importance of this topic from the point of view of Allah's book Himself. I want to share with you the legacy of Ibrahim as just to give us an overview of the importance of this matter and towards the end I will share with you something from my experience and some faqs that I have on this subject I do not claim to have solutions. Honestly I do not claim to say anything that probably hasn't been said before. But my hopes are really in the end you can not hope to even solve the problem until you are aware of the problem. So the first step really is we have to be cautious and aware and accept that ther eis infact a problem. And the next step is we have to put our heads together and we have to seek out solutions of course in the light of Allah's book and the sunnah of His Messenger (saw). But then among ourselves the people of share concrened how do we take the next step, how do we take conclusions. But the very first step for you to talk even about medicine is you have to convince the patient that he is sick. He doesn't think he is sick, he doesn't need any medicine that does not make him concerned itself, finding what prescription I should be on you know. So now I began with these few ayat of Surah AlBaqarah and I wan to go with the very quick dars on these ayat, a reminder, by no means an elaborate tafseer of these ayaat. Some brief reminder. Ibrahim (as) went through many many many trials. When ever Hajj season comes close you hear the Khutbah about Ibrahim (as). And many enormous feats he has accomplished. And when he accomplished all those incredible things at the end of all of them, Allah gave him a certificate. And this ayah is about the certificate. Allah says to him tells us تل َُّبهُ ب ِيَم ر إِْبرَاه َٰى وَإِذِ اْبَ كِ َ اتٍ ف َِمل َ أَت َ َّمه َّن ُ When His lord tested Ibrahim (as) especially ibrahim (as) thoroughly, بتْا َ َٰى ل , and at the end of all those tests he completed all of them, ف َ أَت َ َّمه َّن , ُ he completed every last one of those tests ق َ ل ِ َ اع ِّي ج الَ إِن ُ ناسِ إَِماًما َّ ِلل , كَ at the end of passing all those tests, Allah says to Ibrahim (as), There is no doubt I am installing you Imam over people. I am making you a leader over people.I am making you a role model for humanity. This is the certificate, this is the honor, this is the

Who Are the People of Taqwa | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:09

In shA Allah , in today's breif khutbah Im gonna share with you a reminder. And the reminder is from a passage of surah imran. The third surah of the Quran. First and foremost a very important thing that all of us already know.Allah az zawajal calls us to the friday prayer. The commandment occurs in surah al jumma'h.And he says to us that when the call is made : “fas'au ala zikr i Allah” rush to the remembrance of Allah”(62:9) So instead of calling it a khutbah or prayer he calls it a remembrance of Allah. The essence is to remind ourselves of the commitment. It's a means of refreshing an individual as well as refreshing an entire community. And the best means to do that is the remembrance of Allah .And speaking of remembrance, there are many different ways of remembering Allah . But the best of them, the ultimate remembrance of Allah is what Allah calls himself the ultimate reminder :the Qur'an. Wa zakkir bil Quran. And remind with Quran.(reference not located) kalla inaha tazkirah:no, it is no doubt a powerful means of reminder. (80:11)in huwa ila zikrun wa qura'num mubeen.it is nothing but a reminder.(36:69) One of the central that the Quran plays in the life of a believer and in the life of a community is that it is a reminder. And by definition, a reminder is something you already know. A reminder is not new information. If I remind you , you have a flight at 7'o clock , it's something you knew but you forgot. So Allah reminds us in the Quran and this explains why there is so much repetition in the book of Allah. Allah az zawajal says the same thing many times. many many times he mentions taqwa for example. And the proportions to which something is mentioned more, it illustrates that how quickly people forget that which is more. So if Allah mentions taqwa over 200 times, it is because even if you know about taqwa, you forget to apply it. You forget to think about it,you forget to realize it when the time comes. So u need to be reminded over and over again as do I. So reminder from surah al imran , Allah says “wa ateeu Allah wa ateeu ar rasool, la alla kum turhamun”.obey Allah and the Messenger SAW so that you may be shown mercy”(3:132) So that all of you may be shown mercy. In this ayah Allah has attributed the obedience of Himself and His Messenger SAW with the one who is hopeful of getting mercy. “oola ika yarjoona rahmat Allah”.Those are the ones who are hopeful of the mercy of Allah”.(2:218) So anyone hoping to obtain mercy of Allah needs to first change his attitude towards the obedience of Allah and his Messenger SAW.There is no mercy outside the obedience. And by the way a couple of ayaat before there is a prohibition.”ya ayyuhal azeena amanoo la ta'kulur riba, ad'aafun mud'aafa”. (3:130) A couple of ayaat before, Allah says, those of you who believe, don't consume riba” Dont consume any form of this detestable form of earning. The most common occurrence of which is limited to interest. Well at least its the most common form. Don't consume it even if it multiplies your wealth. And by saying “ada'afun mud'aa'fa”, Allah illustrates something. Why would people get involved in riba anyway. What's the incentive. So you get something out of it. you worked so hard to earn this money. and the banker comes to you and says , “let it work for you now”, let it multiply on top of itself.so you wanna do it so you succeed. Allah gives an alternative in the same ayah.”ittaqu Allah”, the alternative is “be conscious of Allah”. Now when you say, “an alternative”, I was thinking of an alternative way of investment.some where else that I should put money, Allah az zawajal offers the alternative, “have taqwa of Allah”. And then He adds ,
