Khutbah July 27 2012 NAK Lecture In sha Allah in today’s khutba I would like to share with you a few Ayaat that belong to a very powerful surah and a short surah relatively of the Quran, Suratul Furqan! And there are many beautiful qualities of Suratul Furqan in particular these ayats and I just wanna highlight a couple of them. One of them of course is that right before we get into these Ayat Allah Azza wa jal revealed the Ayat of Sajdah. For the ayat right before this one, when a Muslim is to recite it, we are supposed to fall in Sajdah. And it’s actually a conversation with people who commit Shirq among the Mushriqun of Mecca there were people who recognized the word Allah because they were using it even before Islam. When they heard the word Ar Rahman then this was a new name of Allah to them. And even though it’s obvious that it’s referring to Allah Azza wa jal when somebody wants to act ignorant and they wanna act like you don’t know what you are talking about then they pretend like they don’t know. So they would say things like, “Who do worship – God or Allah or Ar Rahman? Who do you worship? Why do you keep talking about this Ar Rahman?” And Ar Rahman is not something new to the Arabs also from Islamic point of view because the ayat that refer to Ar Rahman partly some of the earliest revelations for example the Fatiha. Fatiha is the first complete surah to be revealed – Alhamdullillahi rabbul alamin, ar rahmanur Rahim. How many times they must have heard Bismillahir Rahmanur Rahim. They know enough Arabic to know that Ar Rahman is a describer of the word of God! But regardless when you have to dismantle or undermine somebody’s argument or somebody’s invitation, then you can say anything obnoxious that comes in your head and say, “What Ar Rahman? What do you talking about?” And so in the Ayat before not only did Allah introduce us to Ar Rahman, He introduced us in such a powerful way that the believers when they hear that they are compelled to fall into Sajdah. They can’t even continue to go about their way. Just listen on the Sura-- this is an Ayat of Sajdah. Now when one falls into Sajdah this is the most humble position that a slave of Allah can be in! Even from a point of view of a non-believer! When a non-believer sees us pray, they don’t know what salat is, they might even start talking to you because they don’t know that you are praying. They don’t know what that means. But they will notice that your hands and your eyes and the look on your face, this guy is humble before somebody. What’s going on? Something is on his mind. You know! When we go into Ruku, it’s like the expression of exhaustion. You know in scriptures and things like that when they run for a long time… what do they do? Literally, he grabbed his knees like I can’t do anymore. Our expression that we are weak before Allah Azza wa jal. And the Sajdah, there is no society in the world that doesn’t understand that, that is actually the expression of the ultimate humility. You cave in before somebody. As a matter of fact, in the most ignorant talk shows, and sports shows they will have famous athletes come and like just as a joke their fans are gonna be like doing the expression of Sajdaj. Even today in stadiums and things like that. That’s incredible! But the point I am trying to make is Sajdah is the most humble position you can possibly be in! Physically and absolutely that is supposed to be psychologically also. Psychologically you should be completely humble before Allah Azza wa jal. And when you are completely humble before Allah is the best time to declare two things – not only how low you and I are but how high Allah Azza wa jal is! So we are supposed to go into these ayats that I ...

Words Of Advice Surah Luqman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:46

As Salam Alaikum wa Rehmat Allahi Wabarakatahu, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you a couple of ayaat that belong to Surah Luqman, and they belong within the passage in which Luqman RA is giving advice to his son. Typically in a jummah khutbah or a short talk, we begin at the beginning of the passage and get through the first couple of ayaat and the time is up and there's so much more beautiful advice in this passage that, in most occasions we don't get around to them, or if we do, we don't give them enough time. There are some really beautiful pearls of wisdom that Allah Az Zawjal chose to mention in his book, and it's really beautiful that at the beginning of them he begins the ayaah by saying 'يَا بُنَيَّ' - my beloved son, my dear son, بُنَيَّ is in tasreer meaning my small son, my young boy, it's a term of endearment by the father to the son, in other words Allah wants to highlight before there's one thing for the father to be teaching his son, but another that he goes out of his way to show love before he even teaches him. He makes sure that the son understands that the father loves him. Because a lot of the time, especially for dads, it's not on auto pilot, your children don't automatically assume that you love them. Especially for fathers. They know automatically mum loves me, but they don't know automatically dad loves me. Automatically they assume dad is usually angry at me. So dad has to go out of his way to say son, I love you. Then start the advice, he can't just start the advice, and this is, you guys have experienced this in life, maybe with your own fathers and your own children. Every time we try to give them advice, 'Oh here we go again.' And when the mother just puts her arm around you, and says come sit here, come sit next to me, and then you just listen because it's mum, you just melt. So the father has to go out of his way to make sure the son listens and this father, subhanAllah the advice the gave, the thing, he just wants his son to think about something and he says: Imagine that there is a mustard seed. It's this tiny little mustard seed. Little tiny thing, and it's stick inside of a boulder. The seed is stuck inside of a boulder, and it could be any boulder. Now imagine he wants him to find that seed. He wants his son to find this little seed. And the son might ask and where... and by the way صَخْرَةٍ is a huge rock, a rock the size of the room, a rock the size of this hall, a huge rock. And what are you looking for inside that rock? A little tiny seed. The first task for the son is to see where is this rock? So his father tells him, 'It's somewhere in the universe' He tells his son this rock can be found somewhere in the skies or the earth, it could be on this planet, it could be somewhere else, in some other galaxy far away, and now that we know how big the universe is we know how many possibilities there are. Even if he said فِي الْأَرْضِ - on the earth, how many rocks are there on the earth? And now your job is to find this seed, but if you're going to find this seed what are you going to have to do with rock? If it's inside, deep inside what do you have to do to the rock? You have to smash it, you have to break it. So what kind of power would it take to break a rock, and even if you break the rock let's say you have the technology and you broke the rock. you found the right rock, which is almost impossible, and then you broke it and you broke it into two halves.

Disagreements And Divisions In Our Ummah

Dawah And You | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:00

In sha Allah the Khutba today is revolved around the idea of presenting the message of Islam in the United Sates. And how of us share our responsibility in delivering and sharing that message. But I want to begin with three at least major obstacles that lie between us and sharing that message. This universal message of submission to Allah and this universal message that Muhammad Sallellahu Alaihe wa sallam is the last of the messengers, not that we reject any of them. We accept all of them but we accept him as the final one and the Quran is the final revelation, the final testament, sent to humanity that applies to all human beings. This is something we have to share with all humanity and if we live in the United States we have to share with people that live in the United States. But there are some obstacles in our path. One of those obstacles that you guys talk about all the time even and I do too, is how we are portrayed in the media. How Islam is talked about as something evil. How it is a threat! How your Muslim neighbour might be crazy. How they have actual footage of people picking against Muslim children going to public school in some parts of this country because I don’t want my child sitting next to all the Muslims. Right? Because there is fear! Why are people so scared of Islam because Islam is being portrayed as something evil, something scary, something alien, might as well be from another planet. Is that far off how it is presented. And of course, what is used to make Islam alien? Look at some of the arguments that are used in popular discourse to make Islam seem such a strange thing. One of the first things that is presented especially in bible dealt in this country is that Islam is very much against the principles of Christianity. Right? This is an evil religion! These people practice evil things and our systems of morals and values, they have nothing on them. Which in itself a very hollow claim! You see, if you ever make da’wa to a Christian you will know, that if you make da’wa to them on the front of morality, that we are against shamelessness, we are against abuse of this and that, they will agree with you 100%. Our major problem with their theology is not with their morality but with their theology, with their belief system. So if you talk to them about Jesus, they will run out of arguments. And then they will have to go to something else. So this is in itself is a myth and much of the things, one of thing to consider is so controversial like the women having to cover! They will make an entire documentary on the veil of the women, right? Does the Old Testament not talk about giving veiling? You know, the Talmud, the Jewish text even says, if a woman so much as shows her pinkie, the short finger then this is tantamount to exposing her entire body. That’s how shameless it is! That’s the Talmud! That’s not even an Islamic text but nobody turns the Jewish text and says, “How barbaric, how backward!’ Nothing! There is even as far as today on the news I was listening and there was a commentator you know a supposedly a neutral commentator even said, ‘How are we supposed to deal with this people in business, when we have the perception that they oppress their women! And these husbands they oppress their wives and that’s just part of their religion.” Subhan Allah! We are living in times when by the way, we abuse the women is a reality in the world. It’s the reality in the world not only in the Muslim world, in the non-Muslim world also. But you have societies even in the world like today in the elite of Japanese culture for example, the wife doesn’t eat food unless the husband has finished eating and she has to stand behind him while he is eatin...

Fearing Allah Swt | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:14

I wanna talk about the fear of Allah ‘Azzawajal in this thirty minute or less session that we have together, but before I do, I wanna share with you some obstacles that you & I face in dealing with this subject in a healthy way. First & foremost there are different kinds of people in the audience & obviously within the Muslim community also, there are people at different levels in their relationship with Allah. There are youth that are maybe here at this conference, my guess is, most them aren’t here, that aren’t even remotely religiously affiliated; that, you know, as they were coming up even if they were coming up in a Muslim household, the religion wasn’t emphasized that much & they don’t see the need not even for the Jumu’ah prayer, even on the Fridays that they are off of school, they don’t see the need to go. And their parents, as these kids are becoming teenagers & growing a little older, they are starting to feel the need to bring religion to the lives of these children because they realize the impact it’s having on their character now than they ever did before. So it’s a state of emergency in certain families. That’s one kind of person. But another kind of our category of Muslims, especially younger Muslims, are Muslims that had some sort of an awakening & you started turning towards the religion & one of the things that brought you here to this conference is perhaps may be, a lot of you even came without your family, you came on your own, you came with a bunch of friends because you wanted to feel connected to a larger Muslim community, you wanted to be part of our meet with scholars & speakers & feel rejuvenated; it’s a, it’s a way of refreshing your Iman & I really appreciate that about conferences. At the end of a con….I have been coming to conference since I can remember, my entire life adult life & people complain sometimes “Well, you know in conferences, you only get a twenty minute speech or a thirty minute speech & there is too many programs going on, you don’t even learn anything because the topics are all over the place” & I have always believed that’s not the point; it’s the halal party of the year. That is what a conference is. So if you are coming here with friends & you attend, OK you heard a little bit of good advice, you didn’t come here to learn. Please don’t be offended. Other people Shuyookh have great wisdom in knowledge to offer, but really guys you are sitting here, half the time you are on your phone, so you are not here to learn, let’s be honest with ourselves. We are here to get a little bit of good advice in shaa Allahu t’aala, get a good vibe & feel good about being Muslims that have come together for something good & in shaa Allahu t’aala, they’ll have a positive spirit to do something more with our lives, after we leave. And that in of itself is a worthy goal. It’s a worthy goal. I don’t think that the only goal for Muslims is to learn. I don’t think that. I do think coming together & feeling inspired, I bring my kids every year because I want them to see all kinds of weird Muslims walking around. And then say “That’s one Muslim too?” & I say “Yup, that one too.” I want them to feel that. But, as we grow in our religion, one of the things that starts happening is, we start talking about problems of the Muslims, the problem of the Masjid, the problem of the world, the problem of politics, the problem of, you know, d’awah in America, the problem of some brothers & sisters on my college campus, who don’t do this, who don’t do that & “Brother I was talking to that one Musl...

As-salamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. (Arabic). So I realize that it’s Friday and it’s 4:30 or so, which means you are extremely sleepy. We have already, you know, ‘survived’ a khutbah this afternoon and, you know, now there are 3 speakers that are going to come before you, so I understand the challenge that I have and, actually more so, that you have because I can stay awake because I am talking but you have to stay awake by listening, which is a lot harder. But what I want to share is not very complicated, inshaAllah wa Ta’ala, and I don’t think it will take even the whole 20 minutes. It’s really a heart-to-heart that I want to have with all of you and something that I’ve been thinking about for the past few weeks personally in my life and the life of my family and my children, and that is that the very fundamental premise on which all of our faith is based, the fitrah, which is the subject matter of this session, is under attack, and that we are building an artificial picture of Islam, personally for ourselves and our communities oftentimes, that is really very hollow at its core, and this is a very dangerous trend. An ayah that really makes me shiver when I think about the way Allah expresses this problem, “A’udhu Billahi min ash-shaytaan-ir-rajeem (etc., in Arabic).” The Prophet (saw) is warned about a dangerous group of people within the ranks of those who call themselves Muslim and the big crime that Allah describes they have is that they say they believe with their mouths, but their hearts haven’t come to believe; their hearts have not yet experienced something called faith. This problem is a very serious one, and I want to start in this conversation with something very, very basic: The fitrah is not something that is sound after you become Muslim. All human beings enjoy this predisposed sense of decency that Allah (A’zza Wa Jal) put and preprogrammed in all of us, a sense of commitment to truth, to fairness, to mercy, to courtesy, to respect for others, you know, of gratitude, of appreciation, of having regard. These are things that aren’t just some things Muslims are concerned with; these are things that humanity was gifted with. And these are things that the Prophet (saw) excelled in even before the revelation starting coming to him. He was already at the height of his fitrah. And actually we would consider, at least in my limited understanding of the seerah of the Prophet (saw), in the life of our Messenger (‘alayhi’l-salat wa’l-salam) that that predisposed decency that the Prophet lived up to (‘alayhi’l-salat wa’l-salam) even before revelation came, gave him his credibility to carry the message of Islam. Not anybody can just carry any message and it will have weight. People can give good speeches and people can talk, but when their character is not there to back up what they’re saying and people know them personally and say, “Well, you may be impressed with his or her speech because you know him only from YouTube or you know her only from that public forum, but I know them personally and I don’t want to hear anything they have to say, because I know what they’re like in their personal life.” Which means there is something hollow. That wasn’t the case with our Prophet (saw). There is a very deep introspection that all of us need and, actually, people that are up on this podium and the people that are sitting in the audience, none of us are the exception to this introspection; we all really carefully have to look deep inside and see what kind of people we have become. I want to get a little more specific. I want to leave generalities, inshaAllah wa Ta’ala. I’m really worried, personally, about preserving my own fitrah and the fitrah of my children. They are growing up. My oldest daughter is 10 now, and I literally, I said this in khutbah today, I talked to her just a couple of days ago and I said I miss you. And she says, baba, I’m sitting right here, why do you miss me? I was like,
