027: Summer ’16 And Other Things | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Guess who’s back?! This summer has been one of the busiest I’ve had in a long time, but it has been full of learning, building relationships, pushing myself beyond my comfort zone, and more humidity than I care for.  In this episode, I talk about the #blackgirlmagic happening at the Olympics in Rio, and why people feel the need to criticize Gabby Douglas for her hair. Meanwhile, she’s winning gold medals and being fly. And….How Does She Do It? was featured by iTunes!  026: 10 Life Principles For Living (more) On Purpose | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

It’s so easy in these days of snaps, tweets, and likes to live day to day without much serious thought to how we are living. I recently revisited Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Happiness Project, and was inspired by Gretchen’s purposeful approach to happiness.  She made a list of personal “commandments,” but I decided to write out a list of life principles instead: things I want to keep in mind and ground me as move through this phase of my life.  Today’s episode is a quick recap of those principles with a brief explanation of what each one means to me. I hope you are able to take my list as inspiration to create a your own list of life principles.  Here are a few highlights from the episode: [spp-tweet tweet=”Tiffany shares 10 life principles for living more on purpose, on this episode of #HowDoesSheDoIt”] Life Principle #3: Love Myself First We all want to be blessings to the people around us, especially those to whom we are closest. Too often we think that means we must give and give to the point of neglecting our own needs in the process. I have learned (sometimes the hard way) that if I don’t take care of myself first, I won’t have anything left to give to others.  Life Principle #4: Express Gratitude Daily There’s no denying that life is full of bumps and bruises and each of us receives our fair share. It is easy to focus on the negative things rather than be grateful for the positive things that may go unseen, or that we take for granted. But when I am mindful to express gratitude for the little things throughout the day, I feel someone fortified against the negativity that can come so easily. Gratitude lightens the load and helps you recenter your thoughts on what really matters.  [spp-tweet tweet=”How daily #gratitude keeps you from focusing on the negative aspects of life”] Life Principle #7: Don’t Miss the Forest for the Trees Life is about more than how many people liked (or didn’t like) your latest Facebook or IG post, or the criticism you received on the project your worked so hard on for The Man. It is so easy to get caught up in the minute details of the issues and challenges of the moment, that we lose sight of the big picture. We are all headed toward something greater than where we are right now. Sure, the details and struggles – the trees – matter.  But there’s too much at stake to allow ourselves to forgot that today’s baby steps and challenges are part of a much bigger picture. Life Principle #10: My Steps Are Ordered For My Own Path While there are many things that connect us, no two journeys or paths, even to the same desired destination, are the same.  Still, we fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others. We make assumptions about what they have or how they go there, and end up diminishing ourselves in the process.  To avoid the temptation to compare yourself to others, remind yourself that the steps you takes each day on the road of your life are the steps you need to be taking. It doesn’t matter what somebody else is doing or how he or she are going about navigating his or her own life. YOUR steps are ordered for YOUR path.  [spp-tweet tweet=”Why loving yourself first sets you up to be a greater blessing to the world, on this episode”] Outline of this great episode 1:19 My introduction to the podcast and this episode. 2:48 How you can ask a question or suggest a topic for the show. 3:16 My 10 year reunion at Cornell. 5:20 The significance of Juneteenth and thoughts on mass murders and terrorism. 11:32 The O.J.  025: The Power of (Your) Words | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The power of words is something we often underestimate and seldom take advantage. That’s my main topic on this episode and I’m thankful that you’ve joined me. You can make an incredible difference, in your own life and in the lives of others by paying closer attention to the words you speak. I was recently inspired by a sermon that focused on the words individuals spoke to themselves in response to God’s activity in their lives. I wanted to share how I’m applying what I learned to my own life and give you some tools that you might be able to apply to your own. I think you’ll enjoy the topic and find something that will enable you to be blessed and to be a blessing.  [spp-tweet tweet=”On this episode: The power of words and 5 kinds of words you can use to speak power into your life”] The Gorilla and The Child  The energy and passion in response to the regrettable killing of an endangered gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo after to a boy climbing into its cage has been surprising in some ways. While we should work to protect species that are endangered, I also understand the those who are concerned for the safety and life of child. When it comes to comparing the value of a human life and that of an animal, I have a very clear opinion on what the choice should be. You can hear my thoughts on the situation and the way I believe we should think about similar incidents on this episode. Roots, The Series, and The Roots, The Band I promise didn’t plan this: I have two stories related to the word “roots” – the upcoming television drama based on Alex Haley’s amazing book, and the band, “The Roots” who play nightly on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show. I wanted to share my thoughts on the issue of slavery and the importance of dramas and presentations that clearly depict that portion of our history, and the incredible experience it was to attend the Roots Picnic where the band played with Usher (who was amazing!).  [spp-tweet tweet=”It’s easy to be weighed down when things aren’t going right. It takes energy to find what you can gain from it”] The Power of Words and What I’ve Decided about MY Words Your words are powerful, whether you realize it or not. Think back to the things significant adults said to you growing up – negative or positive. Now, take a moment to consider the impact those words had on you. I suspect you are able to find instances where both helpful and hurtful words were spoken, and some of those may still have a significant impact in your life for good or ill. The power of words can’t be underestimated. I’ve recently come to a decision about how I am going to speak words that create greater opportunities for success in my own life and bring about greater blessing in the lives of others. I hope you’ll take the time to listen to what I’m learning and find how you can apply the concept to your own life. 5 Kinds Of Powerful Words You Should Choose For Your Life I wanted to offer 5 kinds of words I believe each of us need to learn to speak to ourselves put us into a place of opportunity rather than a place of disadvantage. Those 5 kinds of words are: #1 Words that remind you to check yourself. #2 Words of strength. #3 Words that soothe. #4 Words of joy. #5 Words that acknowledge the blessing of the struggle. Curious? On this episode of How Does She Do It I unpack each of those and give scriptural examples of those kinds of words that I use in my personal life to strengthen my faith and encourage me so that I can face both joyful and difficult times with strength and confidence. [spp-tweet tweet=”When you are looking for opportunities to grow, you cannot lose ~ hear more on this episode”] Outline Of This Episode  1:00 Welcome and ways you can connect to me or the How Does She Do It community. 1:56 How to leave a rating and review on iTunes. 3:12 JUST MY THOUGHTS:

020: Traveling Taught Me | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

I am back from vacation and feel like I missed so much! Thankfully, my plane landed in time for me to see Chris Rock’s opening monologue at this year’s 88th Academy Awards.  And yeah, it was about as awkward as I expected it to be.  He made some good points, but he brought out Stacey Dash and I don’t know that I’m sophisticated enough to understand that joke.  But back to vacation. Going away makes me extra reflective, so this week, I share 5 things I realized about traveling and vacation, while I was on vacation. Mentioned In This Episode * Chris Rock’s Monologue * Melissa Harris Perry’s exit from MSNBC and her impact on coverage and discussion of social justice, race, and politics on television Join the Email List!  017: Clueless about Privilege and How To Talk About Race | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:18

This week has been just...a lot. In this second Just My Thoughts episode, I discuss the government and public health crisis happening in Flint; the several seats Stacey Dash should have; Sam Smith's brush with racism; Macklemore's new song, White Privilege II; and how we talk about race, or don't, in this country. In short, I think we need more uncomfortable and open dialogue across and about our differences if we want to impact change in race relations.

 016: Being Black At Work | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:01

Being a racial or ethnic minority in a predominately white workplace can have its share of challenges.  In this episode, I share some questions I think people of color may ask themselves, or think about as they navigate corporate America, and some ways to deal. Just My Thoughts Last week, the Oscar nominations were announced, and soon after, #OscarsSoWhite was trending (again) on Twitter.  Some (Jada Pinkett Smith, for example) are calling for people to boycott the show, while others (for example, Janet Hubert, also know as Aunt Viv)…uh…fervently disagree with that direction.  Note: I recorded the episode right before I learned of Aunt Viv’s take on the whole thing, so I didn’t get to comment on the episode.
