Citizens' Climate Lobby

One of the more troubling aspects of climate change is its impact on oceans, which are a major source of food and also affect our weather patterns. Joining us for the May call to discuss that impact is Julia Roberson, VP of Communications for Ocean Conservancy. Her passion is communicating about the people and stories behind big environmental issues in a way that leads to action. Roberson is a skilled writer and media relations professional deeply committed to ocean issues and to finding the intersections between serving nature and people’s needs in our rapidly growing world. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, from Appalachian State University.

Mark Reynolds, CCL's Executive Director, shares several transformative moments for him from the early days of CCL's international conferences during a recent call with emerging CCL group leaders. During the call, Mark highlights how CCL from the very beginning has been an organization for climate advocates that believe they can make a difference, that are willing to engage in a non-cynical view of our government, and not just resign themselves to the status quo because everyone says the changes we need for federal climate policy are impossible.

Mark Reynolds, CCL's Executive Director, shares personal reflections and three recommendations for group development he learned from the early days of CCL:   1. Approach recruitment through deciding ahead of time each person matters deeply to you rather than evaluating everyone's immediate potential 2. Celebrate your group's accomplishments (big and small) with a zeal for connecting how important each action is to our larger goals 3. Create a culture of relatedness by authentically investing in your group members and being there for them when they need a listening ear

How do extreme weather events impact our mental health? What can we do to protect ourselves and our family from the mental health risks that come with extreme weather? How can climate advocates avoid being overwhelmed by the work and address the anxiety, the anger, and the despair? Art House Artist Fritz Horstman talks about his trip to the Arctic Circle to take underwater photographs. The visual landscape of the frozen and thawing North captivated him, but the sounds really inspired him. He asked his fellow artists on the voyage to recreate the creaks and groans of the glaciers for his video, Ice Voices.
