Grizzly Kiki | Pop Culture & Interviews With Queer Artists
Summary: Grizzly Kiki began in April 2014 as a pop culture and drag-centric podcast hosted by Robert Lechuga & Daniel Silva. We launched with recaps of RuPaul’s Drag Race and other reality programming. Shortly after releasing the first few episodes, we narrowed our focus to create a podcast that was unique in concept and would serve a community near and dear to us: DRAG QUEENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The podcast is equal parts oral history and good old-fashioned kiki. We found that there were few platforms where Drag and Nightlife Artists could talk about their art and themselves in an open and honest way. Most of what is known about these artists comes from videos posted on the Internet or what they experience in bars and clubs. It was clear that there were stories to be told and shared with the world. Our mission is to create a comfortable and safe environment, where these artists can share their histories and experiences. Ours is a podcast that is meant to serve the drag and nightlife community by capturing the artists’ voices and making them available to the public. All Hail Queen Bey & La Reina Cardi B! This week, Beyoncé became the first black woman to headline Coachella - or "Beychella," as it is being called. Always at the top of her game, Queen Bey took the stage by storm with an epic performance inspired by Historically Black Colleges & Universities. Needless to say, she left us with all the feels! Cardi B made her debut at Coachella this year on the heels on her debut album release & pregnancy reveal on SNL. Renaming the festival "Boachella," Cardi performed with an army of white-clad dance & aerial artists. The Switch 2 is in full gear & we recap Ep. 5 of Chile's version of RuPaul's Drag Race. This week, the girls shared a sumptuous Chilean feast & the International Queens had to walk a high-risk fashion runway. Chile's version of RuPaul's Drag Race is quickly gaining traction on its namesake, especially with Episode 4's epic "Prueba Artistica." The Chilean Queens have to perform in a choreographed outdoor number to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance"...all while personifying classic Hollywood villains! "Don't Hinder Your Blessings." On Episode 3 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10, the challenges take a backseat to the escalating conflict between The Vixen & Aquaria. Building tensions come to ahead during Untucked & some of the other girls step in to help resolve the argument. However, will it be enough in the end? Aside from The Vixen vs. Aquaria drama, the Queens had to market RuPaul's chocolate bar in a casting couch-themed mini challenge & market new dating apps to a variety of underserved people. May The Best Queen Win! RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 premiered on the heels of All Stars Season 3, which many thought was too soon. However, the premier did no disappoint. Fourteen new queens were inducted into the Drag Race Queendom & introduced to the world! On the first episode, we got to know all 14 contestants, 5 of which are from NYC. The ethnic diversity (8 of the girls are POC) was a welcome shift, as were the variety of styles of drag. Among the cast are pageants queens, broadway babies, comedy queens, & an activist! Joining us on this episode is Season 9 star, Alexis Michelle, who's debut album, "Lovefool, " is being released in May!
2018 Is The Year Of FEMME! On this episode, we welcome back Corey Camperchioli, the creator, writer, & lead actor of FEMME: The Film. When we last spoke with Corey, the film's Kickstarter campaign has just been launched. Within weeks, the goal had been met two times over! Joining us to talk about the film's upcoming release is Producer, Benno Rosenwald. The film's impact is palpable, as it challenges outdated concepts of masculinity & gender performance within the LGBT community. Corey used his own experiences as a single gay man in New York City to explore the challenges faced by those who are Femme when up against the Masc4Masc culture. And The Winner Is... On the finale of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 3, a new "Current Motherf&@king Reigning" was crowned. However, since the episode's airing, the win & Top 2 lip sync have been surrounded by controversy. After making it through one of the most confusing seasons to date, the Top 4 have to write their own verses in a remix of RuPaul's "Kitty Girl." Then, they have to perform them in a live music video in ONE TAKE, with the eliminated queens among an army of backup dancers. Three of the queens give it their all, & the fourth gets her own Brother Sewing Studio. The final runway theme was "Best Drag Eleganza Extravaganza." The looks were decidedly high-end & truly spectacular...for the most part. Three of the girls left us breathless, while the fourth was a solid "Meh." Always a fan of a twist, RuPaul enlisted the help of the eliminated queens & had them choose the Top 2. Did they choose fairly or was it RuPaul's Best Friends Race? What's That Smell? On this episode: Fart Fetishism, also known as Eproctophilia , has been explored primarily via online forums & videos. However, a recent Vice article profiles several men who open up about about their passion for farts. Canadian psychiatrist Dr. Melvyn Iscove has his license revoked after years of sexual misconduct came to light. Dr. Iscove specialized in the "treatment of patients with problems related to homosexuality," yet caused them more pain & anguish by engaging in sex acts with them to cure their "disorder." We discuss the effects of RuPaul’s interview reflected in a CBS Sunday Morning segment that misgendered Drag Race contestants. A Florida woman is suing Hamburger Mary's of Tampa for $1.5 Million Dollars, after claiming that a Drag Queen's breasts caused her severe head & neck injuries. Red For Filth? Ben's jaw-dropping self-elimination on Episode 6 left audiences shook!. Episode 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars finds the new Top 5 Queens wondering why she took herself out of the running and, more importantly, who's lipstick did Bebe pick. Not one prone to participating, Bebe refuses to reveal her choice, much to the annoyance of the other Queens. On this episode, the Queens are assigned roles in “My Best Squirrelfriend’s Dragsmaids Wedding Trip." While each of the characters is inspired by powerful actresses whose work earned them awards, the "Girls Trip"-style movie trailer was less than inspiring and somewhat unresolved. Thankfully, this week's runway theme was a much-needed palette cleanse. While "Red To Filth" didn't really describe a theme, the Queens presented very strong looks. They donned beads, fringe, inflatable cones, latex, & Highland couture to turn the runway into a true fashion moment! Joining us from London is Meth! On Episode 6 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, the eliminated Queens return and compete against Top 5 in a Spice Girls style girl group challenge. It was Sitting On A Secret (eliminated Queens) versus Drag Up Your Life (Top 5), with the winner of the Lipsync For Your Legacy picking one girl to stay and one to go home. Although Sitting On A Secret performed the best, Drag Up Your Life won the Maxi Challenge (Surprise Surprise!) The top 2 were Bebe & Ben (Again!), with Ben being declared the winner. Who Ben picks to come back is no surprise. However, the Queen Ben chooses to send home left Ru in disbelief & polarized the Drag Race fandom!
