 Episode 100 : SOMETHING WILD / Top 3 Chance Encounters in Movies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:39

This week we pull out   SOMETHING WILD!   The wildly inventive and entertaining comic nightmare from former Roger Corman prodigy Jonathan Demme. This screwball odyssey is a ride to remember. Jeff Daniels plays clean-cut New York bond trader Charlie Driggs, who accepts a ride home from a strange but attractive lower-class woman named Lulu (Melanie Griffith). The sexy Louise Brooks lookalike doesn't take him home, but shanghais him for a bizarre road trip to Virginia that includes kinky bondage sex, destruction of property, and robbery. Things get stranger when Lulu tells Charlie that her real name is Audrey and takes him home to meet her mother, asking him to pose as her husband. The charade continues until her high-school reunion, where the road trip (and the entire film) takes a sharp U-turn into psycho-thriller territory. Audrey's dangerously psychotic ex-con husband, Ray Sinclair (Ray Liotta), shows up. What had been a liberating fling for Charlie turns into a bloody and vicious battle for survival... We'll tell ya what we got out of it, plus our Top 3 "Chance Encounters" in movies.

 Episode 99 : A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night / Top 3 Directorial Debuts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:47

A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT    The first Iranian Vampire western ever made is what we pull from the Q this week! Director Ana Lily Amirpour basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp with this blistering mash-up genre. Full of archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian new wave, and it goes a bit like this... Bad City, a quasi ghost town wasteland populated with oil drilling machines and a palpable sense of being.  Here, Arash (a lonely teenager) lives with his drug addicted father who consistently owes money to his dealer. Arash tries his best to make a living working as a gardener for a rich family, where he’s managed to keep the wolves at bay, as well as save enough for a sweet ride! Unknown to him though, the city is inhabited by an equally lonely young vampire whose name we never learn. She acts as a sort of vigilante, choosing to feed from those who she considers "bad", killing them without mercy. When one night she runs into Arash, she will finally know the possibilities that love offers, and that even in Bad City, a small glimmer of hope can shine. Inspired by "new talent to talk about" Amirpour, we also get into our Top 3 Directorial Debuts.

 Episode 98 : THE BOXTROLLS / Top 3 “Cheesy” Movies (In Adam’s Movie Collection) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:41

It's time to give a nod to a little stop animation with this weeks selection, THE BOXTROLLS  Adam knows some things about cheese, so perhaps it's fitting he queued this one up... This 2014 feature from Laika Entertainment tells the story of the Boxtrolls, a subterranean race of underground box wearing dwellers who live beneath the fictional Victorian town of Cheesebridge, and although they may look a bit fearsome, they're actually quite friendly. Having previously adopted an orphaned infant boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright), the diminutive tinkerers raise him as one of their own even as the rumors above swirl about whether or not he was STOLEN from them by the impish creatures below. The two things the people of this posh town treasure most are their children and their cheeses, which is without a doubt the status of choice - in this town, the size of your brie determines the size of your clout!  When the unsavory Archibald Snatcher (Kingsly) finds himself unable to break into the upper class of the cheese hierarchy, he vows to destroy every last BoxTroll in the hopes that a hero status will unlock the door to the towns most coveted cheese tasting rooms. Little does the villainous Snatcher realize that Eggs has a wealthy friend named Winnie (voiced by Ellie Fanning), and that Winnie may be the key to solving the longstanding feud between the people above, and the benevolent creatures below... Listen to see where the four of us land on this well crafted tale by the same people who brought you Coraline and ParNorman. To conclude (you gotta hear this) we offer up our Top 3 "Cheesy" films from Adam's movie collection.

 Episode 97 : BLUE RUIN / Top 3 Movie Drifters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:41

This week we wander into BLUE RUIN, the Award winning American revenge story from writer/director Jeremy Saulnier. The film brings to us the harrowing story of Dwight (Macon Blair), a homeless drifter who’s dropped out of society after the wake of a brutal crime that has left him emotionally incapacitated. But when he learns the man responsible for his tragic past is about to be released from prison, Dwight returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family Blue Ruin received mainly positive reviews from critics. Most describing it as "Smart, stripped-down, and thrillingly grim. The film also received a bit of accolade for its well shot cinematography and impactful performance from Macon Blair... Along with our breakdown, we also offer up our "Top 3 Drifters in Movies"

Episode 96: HOT FUZZ / Top 3 Buddy Cops in Movies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:41

This week we turn The Q over to one of of our preferred customers! Kevin Dillon, the Wizzard of Wexford takes the reigns and pulls out a personal favorite,  HOT FUZZ  the 2007 film from writer/director Edgar Wright. Goes something like this... Top London cop Nicholas Angel is good! SO good in fact, he’s too good! And unfortunately making the rest of the force look bad! To remedy the situation, he’s reassigned to the quiet and crime free town of Sandford. There he’s paired with new partner Danny Butterman, who endlessly questions him on the action lifestyle, something he’s only seen in movies. Everything seems dull for Angel, until two actors are found decapitated. It’s called an accident, but Angel isn't going to accept that, especially when more and more people turn up dead. Soon, Angel and Danny clash with everyone, whilst trying to uncover the truth behind the mystery of the apparent "accidents", and maybe the boring town of Sandford needs him more than anyone originally thought. Upon it’s release in 2007, Hot Fuzz was met with rather good reviews from fans and critics alike – and is generally regarded in equal esteem as Shaun of the Dead – the film that opened the door for this sophomore effort from Write and Pegg.. We know Kevin Dillon likes this, listen to see if we agreed. That, plus our Top 3 "Buddy Cops" in  movies.

 Episode 95: TRAINSPOTTING / Top 3 Drug Induced Movie Scenes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:46

This week it's Savage's turn to pull his "Perfect 10" from the vastness of Netflix Instant, what we get is   TRAINSPOTTING  the Danny Boyle directed film from 1996. Just to recap, the movie tells the story of Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug's blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. Renton's two best friends are also junkies: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond, and Spud (Ewan Bremner), a guileless nerd who suggests Pee Wee Herman's debauched cousin. Renton and his pals also hang out with Begbie (Robert Carlyle), a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish. After one too many brushes with the law, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Spud all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime. The film was also the debut of Kelly McDonald, who plays the Diane, the young love interest and sometimes voice of reason to McGregor. Listen to see if we can follow suit with Savage's perfect score as well as our "Top 3 Drug Induced Scenes in Movies"

When Regan gets completely out of hand, and slides deeper into darkness, the doctors are left clueless. With no other place to turn, Chris calls in young priest Father Karras (Jason Miller), who becomes convinced that the girl is possessed by the Devil and that they must call in an exorcist, namely, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow). His foe proves to be no run-of-the-mill demon, and both the priest and the girl suffer numerous horrors during their struggles – requiring sacrifices of the deepest order where only the struggle of good and evil can exist. The Exorcist received a theatrical re-release in 2000, in a special edition that added 11 minutes of footage trimmed from the film's original release and digitally enhanced Chris Newman's Oscar-winning sound work.  Often considered a culture landmark of cinema, The Exorcist is regarded as one of the greatest film achievements of all time.  We round it out with our "Top 3 Practical Effects in Film"

 Episode 88 : SERPICO / Top 3 Movie Beards! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:45

Grow a beard, grow a conscience. This week it's 1973's    Serpico   Sidney Lumets portrayal of an honest real-life New York City cop against a corrupt system. Neophyte officer Frank Serpico (Al Pacino) is determined not to let his job get in the way of his individuality. Despite his colleagues' leery reactions, he keeps one foot firmly planted in the counterculture, sporting a beard and love beads while living in bohemian Greenwich Village. Serpico's peers genuinely ostracize him, however, when he refuses to take bribes like everybody else. Appalled by the extent of police corruption, Serpico goes to his superiors, but when he discovers that they have ignored his charges, he takes the potentially fatal step of breaking the blue wall of silence and going public. Serpico's revelations trigger an independent investigation by the Knapp Commission, making him a marked man, and permanently changing his life. Shot on location with a gritty emphasis on documentary-style realism, Serpico presents a city in decay both literally and morally, as everybody is in on the take, and the cops and criminals are almost interchangeable. Released in late 1973, Serpico's true story of bureaucratic depravity touched a cultural nerve, and the film became a hit with both critics and audiences, particularly for Pacino's complex performance as the honest, long-haired whistleblower. How do we end this one? TOP 3 MOVIE BEARDS! Absolutely.

Episode 87 : RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS / Top 3 Evil Headmasters in Movies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:43

One particular example is by government decree, where every Indian child under the age of 16 must attend residential school. In the kingdom of the Crow, that means imprisonment at St. Dymphna's, where you’re left at the mercy of "Popper", the sadistic Indian agent who runs the school. At 15, Aila is the weed princess of Red Crow. Hustling with her uncle Burner, she sells enough dope to pay Popper her "truancy tax", keeping her out of St. D's. But when Aila's drug money is stolen and her father Joseph returns from prison, the precarious balance of Aila's world is destroyed. Her only options are to run or fight... and Mi'gMaq don't run.Rhymes for Young Ghouls had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept 9th, 2013.  Episode 86 : LET THE RIGHT ONE IN / Top 3 Undead Movie Characters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:40

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN   This week in THE Q we delve deeply into the very affecting Swedish film from 2008... It goes something like this. Oskar, a fragile, anxious boy, living in a small Swedish town, is regularly bullied but never strikes back. The lonely boy's wishes daily for a friend and one day (just like the snow) that wish seems to fall upon him when he meets 12 year old Eli, the girl who moves in next door.. A pale, serious young thing who ONLY comes out at night, seems wise beyond her years, and not at all affected by the freezing temperatures. Coinciding with Eli's arrival is a series of inexplicable disappearances and murders. One man is found tied to a tree, another frozen in the lake, a woman bitten on the neck. Blood seems to be the common denominator – and for an introverted boy like Oskar, who’s FASCINATED by gruesome stories, it doesn't take long before he figures out that Eli may just be the things that horror stories are made from. But soon their fascination with each other leads to a subtle romance, one that gives Oskar the strength to fight back against his aggressors. As they grow closer though, Oskar becomes increasingly aware of the tragic, inhuman dimension of Eli, and of what her existence may lead to - still, Oskar cannot bring himself to forsake her, and with all the burgeoning feelings and confused emotions of a young adolescent, he KNOWS that Eli can only continue to live if she continually moves on, but when Oskar is suddenly faced with his darkest hour, Eli returns to defend him the only way she can… After it’s (2008) release, Let the Right one In received widespread critical praise. In 2010, Empire magazines ranked it #15 on it’s  "Top 100 Films Of World Cinema” and has recently been placed # 28 On TIME OUT’S poll of the most important horror films of all time – as voted on by actors, writers and directors who have worked in the Horror Genre. All of this plus our "Top 3 Undead Movie Characters"... I don't think that sucks at all.
