This week on We Be Geeks: The entire team is back together and ready to talk geek! Something good comes out of today! Wizard World was on Julz's radar as she attended this past weekend. While there were great things about Wizard World Pittsburgh, it sadly isn't returning. It's not on the list for next years shows. It still may be possible, and we are hoping so. Speaking of Wizard World, Stephen Shamus (former Chief Marketing Officer) was recently fired for obtaining autographs from the celebrities, and selling them. He is no longer with Wizard World, but one wonders how much this has hurt them. Is Jessica Jones, Daredevil, or Luke Cage a better show? We discuss this much more in depth on this show. Speaking of Netflix, Stranger Things is adding some new cast members. Still no word on when the hit show will return, but we are all waiting patiently. Pacific Rim has begun filming it's second movie. It has hit some bumps in the road, but is on its way to us in 2018. Out 200th episode is coming up very soon, and we have some very cool prizes to one lucky winner. Stay tuned for your chance to win.
We begin this episode with Mike demonstrating his newest podcasting toy, which somehow leads into a bit of reminiscing about the old show WKRP in Cincinnati (Sports and Weather on the 5's). After that bit of fun, we move on to talk a bit about the recent announcement that comic creator Steve Orlando will be soon be putting out a new series with Boom Studios titled “Namesake”. Next, we move on to talk a bit about Justice League and Flash comics, which then leads into a discussion about the Legends of Tomorrow show in which we joke about the bad CGI of a “hulked out Nazi” seen in a recent episode. Next, we move over to Marvel as we discuss Mockingbird writer Chelsea Cain leaving Twitter due to harassment issues. This naturally moves to a discussion about what Marvel is trying to do with the changes, delays, and saturation of comics from the company. There is a brief interlude where we discuss sports a bit, we were recording during the last game of the World Series after all, and then quickly move on to our normal geek discussions. We talk about the Marvel Defenders series coming to Netflix next year, and talk about the list of familiar characters appearing in the series. The 200th episode of We Be Geeks is coming in the next couple of weeks, and Mike takes a moment to talk about some of the prizes that we will be giving away to celebrate the occasion. Next, we talk about CW show Arrow bringing a familiar Batman character to the show in the form of Talia Al Ghul, which then leads to a look into the villains that have plagued the Emerald Archer over the years in the comics. Talking about villains leads us to ponder how many times the character Dr. Light has appeared on television. Next, we talk about two Flash related stories regarding both the CW tv show, and the upcoming Flash movie. First, we discuss a couple of pictures floating around the internet of Mark Hamill on the Flash tv set dressed in a Jokeresque costume, then we discuss the departure of yet another director from the Flash movie. We start winding down the show as we talk about the announcement of a line of Funko Pops based on the Stranger Things Netflix show, which then leads into talk about a store called 2nd and Charles. We then end the episode with talk of the new We Be Geeks Declassified Youtube channel, and some of the content we plan to put on the channel.
We have Nicole Wright and Tonya Dodds from the Nicole and Tonya Show on the podcast tonight. We talk about the mad lip synching skills on the show. We talk the rigors of having a weekly show. We talk about Nicole’s chances of being a mascot. We talk about their favorite segments and ones that did not come out the way they wanted to. We talk about our favorite Netflix shows, and how web series are making it into the Netflix realm. We talk about Tonya’s upcoming film Red Spring, hopefully coming out Q2 2017. How long will the show last? Tonya and Nicole tell us their thoughts on it. We talk mean Tonya, and fear of elevators. We talk about our favorite shows that have started up. We even talk sports. What? You heard that right.
This week on We Be Geeks: Special guest star Devin Peacock joins the team to talk about his creation, Unsung Heroes. From what inspired him to make this awesome Web Series, to the plans for a pilot episode, we have all the awesome details! Devin is not only an actor, but a singer and a dancer. He also creates custom made action figures! He is pretty much a Superhero himself, and it's all in a days work for him. Devin's enthusiasm is contagious, and you will definitely love hearing about his journey that led him to Unsung Heroes. Also, what are Devin's favorite Superhero team ups? You will have to listen to find out.
Although it was a bit of a slow news week, we still managed to find a few things to talk about. First, we start off by talking about the premieres of Flash and Arrow on the CW. We give our thoughts on the first episodes, and talk about the upcoming season. Next, we discuss the announcement that friend of the show Bruce Zick is rereleasing his Zone Continuum comic book at Dark Horse Comics. The conversation then moves to the announcement that the cult film based on a board game Clue will be coming to theaters as a live stage show, then move on to a discussion about Jimmy Olsen becoming the hero known as Guardian on the Supergirl show. We finish the show with talk of the latest trailer for the upcoming season of Walking Dead before talking in depth about the new version of the We Be Geeks Youtube channel that will feature new content from the We Be Geeks crew. Mike then shows us the swag he got from the Hero Box he ordered on the Superherostuff.com website, making the rest of us very jealous.
We start out the show talking about Warren Ellis taking over the Wildstorm imprint for DC. We move on to talking Dynamite! taking over the rights for Mighty Mouse and Charmed comics. We talk the CW Hero Box. Which of the CW’s characters have the best costumes? We run down the top 14 costumes. Did they get the list right? Find out here. The Punisher has started filming. Are you looking as forward to it as we are? We talk Comic Con and how much celebrities make at the cons. It will blow your mind. We thought it was going to turn into a Mike’s grind my gears section. We talk Gears of War heading to the Big Screen. Suicide Squad is coming out with an extended cut on Blu-Ray. We talk about Disney’s Spaceport and the new ride Stormtrooper Battle Escape ride. Want to know more? Just listen to the show. We talk about the upcoming shows that we are looking forward to for the upcoming week.
This week on We Be Geeks: There is currently a petition on Change.Org to have Shia LaBeouf to play The Red Hood in the DC extended Universe. So far there are over 400 signatures for this. We have a hard time wrapping our collective thoughts around this as we are not really the biggest fans. I guess we will see what happens with this petition. Flash may be returning a character to the show. Patty Spivot may be returning for the third season. although it id not totally confirmed yet, it is a possibility. Speaking of TV shows, Gotham is also on our radar. They supposedly are aging Poison Ivy to make it easier for them to make her more of a seductress. Not entirely sure that they needed to do this to the show, but we will see how it plays out. Profiles in History is having a Hunger Games auction part 2. There are many auction highlights, including: Katniss Everdeen Victory Tour ensemble, combat wetsuits, Peeta interview suit, and much much more. The auction is available to anyone worldwide. The team finishes up with some Star Wars trivia cards. It's fun to do these and even better to have the whole team together again to talk all of this geeky goodness. --
This week the We Be Geeks crew talks Wonder Woman’s connection to the show Powerless. We talk about our comic pulls. Which ones we are buying, which ones don’t we like? We then talk comic shops and what they need to do to survive. It was intriguing. We talk season 11 of Red Dwarf. It is coming out on the on demand UKTV Play service. It premiers online on the 15th, and on TV the week after on the 22nd. We talk Funko coming out with a line for Disney princesses. We also talk about their new NHL line. What the…? Stan Lee’s life being made into an action adventure movie. You heard that right. We talk about it here. We also talk about Darth Vader #25 coming out this month. We talk about our hatred of variant covers to end the show.
Jeff Moss from Comic Book Bento makes a return appearance to the podcast to talk about the Mega Bento Box for Semptember, the theme of which is “As Seen On TV”. Jeff begins by talking about some changes coming to the Bento Box process, such as changing the mid-month deadline for box sign-up, and the Friend Bye feature. Jeff then talks with the gang about the “As Seen On TV” mega box for this month that will be given away to one lucky subscriber. The We Be Geeks crew teamed up with Comic Book Bento to help pick out a few books for the “As Seen On TV” box, and Jeff turned the tables on us to question each member about our choices. We began with Mike, who talked about why he picked Howard The Duck for the box, mentioning several television appearances for the duck. Brett’s pick was Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and the group takes a few minutes to talk about how Buffy was the first property to directly continue a television series into comic book form. Julz was unable to appear in this episode, but that did not stop the group from discussing her pick for the bento box, Samurai Jack. Finally, Derrick talks about his choice, Transformers from IDW, sparking a lengthy discussion about toylines from the 80s. Jeff then talks about one of his choices for the box, Supergirl, but keeps the rest of the books a secret. After discussing the particulars of the box, Jeff talks about the Back To School Sale Comic Book Bento is having, talks about the origin of the concept for the Mega Bento Box and then mentions discount codes that can be found on the Bento Box Facebook page. Next, Jeff and the We Be Geeks gang announce their plans to make “Afterboxing” videos for the Comic Book Bento Boxes, and other review videos they are planning to make in the future. Then, Jeff talks about surprises that can be found in the box, such as Valiant’s Faith trade that was sent out in the bento box before it was officially released in stores, and a book that Jeff and his crew actually self-published called Sam and Fuzzy, which leads to a discussion about the quality of the books offered in the bento boxes. Mike mentions the possibility of adding Zone Continuum, a book written by past We Be Geeks Guest Roland Mann, and Jeff says that is still in the works. Then, Jeff talks about bringing his company to comic conventions, and announces that they will be at the New York Comic Con this year, where they will have an exclusive box for the convention. As the show winds down, the gang discusses the value of the boxes when you consider what you get for you money, then talk about how Graphic Novels and Trade Paperbacks can now be found in libraries and classrooms. Jeff talks about his love of Golden and Silver Age comics, and mentions the crazy stories and character that can be found in those older books. Finally, Jeff gives us some future bento teases, talks about further convention plans, and tells us where to find Comic Book Bento online.
This week on We Be Geeks the whole team is back together again and really going off the rails this episode. Stranger Things was renewed for a second season, and all is right with the world. The first season left us with so many questions, that hopefully most of them will be answered with the new season. While the date is still TBA, we know it will be in 2017 sometime. Supergirl is introducing Metallo in season 2 which should make for a good story. We already know Superman is making an appearance, but we don't know for how long. Marvel is currently trying to get a New Warriors show off the ground and one is centered around Squirrel Girl. With the popularity of the comic book series, it's easy to see how this show should attract a huge audience. Zombieland is returning for a sequel. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are back to do the sequel, after adding Deadpool to their resume. Last topic, 15 Superhero shows you forgot about. To be honest, I didn't even know about some of these shows. It's a pretty cool list and the team have a fun time discussing it.
We start off the show with a brief, but lively discussion about the actor Mathew McCanaughey, don’t ask. After that, we move to some Star Wars news, where we discuss the casting of Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo film. We also discuss an article describing some of the meanings behind the title of the next Star Wars film, Rogue One, and then talk about Chewbacca and R2-D2 as well. Next up, we discuss director Doug Liman leaving the Gambit movie and moving on to direct the future Justice League Dark movie, which leads into talk of the Justice League Dark comic book as well as our hopes that the book will return. After that, we take a few minutes to talk about the Justice League vs. Teen Titans animated movie and then talk about the rumors behind a revival of the Young Justice animated series. We talk about a potential reboot of the He-Man movie before learning that Dolph Lundgren is scheduled to star in the CW Arrow show. Casting news is next with talk of the Flash and Marvel castings. We then take a moment to discuss the “team up” of Marvel Insider and Comixology that will benefit Marvel Comic reader. We wind down the show with talk of DC bringing the character Raven back to comics in November, and then end the show with a discussion of DC verses Marvel comic sales that leads into a fun discussion on comics in general.
We open the show talking about Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar, coming back in an animated film Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. Which leads to Jared Leto being disenfranchised with his role in the Suicide Squad. This leads us into an open letter from a former Warner Brothers employee that was also disenfranchised with Warner Brothers (time to make the donuts Kevin). This kicks us off into the Clue movie reboot. Which leads us into a discussion of movies worse than the Transformers movies. We talk Marvel Comic’s Runaways coming as a live action to a series to Hulu. We also give you the lowdown on all of the comic properties coming to TV coming up in the next couple years. We talk about a new type of cantina called Scum and Villainy Cantina. This may be the bar you are looking for. Want to see if you can deflect lightsaber beams? You will be able to do it in the Disney parks with laser deflecting lightsabers. We also talk the end of the Invincible series. Subscribe today on iTunes and Stitcher and leave a 5 star review. This week on We Be Geeks: The team (Sans Brett) is joined by Comic Book & Board Game Bento creator, Jeff Moss. Jeff gives us an inside look at what it is like from beginning to end to curate a box each month. The theme plays an important part and adds a special touch to each box. I can attest that the Board Game Bento is as epic as it sounds, and a lot of fun. We also learned that the comic book industries have been pretty awesome in providing books for Comic Bento. A lot of times they will offer a book that Jeff thinks is perfect for the theme that they picked out. It's good to hear that. Jeff told us what some of his dream books would be in a Bento, and they might have to make a special box since there are so many. Jeff ultimately wants Comic Book Bento to being people together all over the world. You can get either of these boxes through the We Be Geeks website and take 15% off your order. Also We Be Geeks has something in the works with Comic Book Bento that will be announced shortly. Stay tuned! Subscribe today on iTunes and Stitcher and leave a 5 star review.
