As North America’s three leaders meet in Toluca, Mexico tomorrow it will be in the shadow of NAFTA’s 20th Anniversary, with discussions likely to focus on trade. Regional energy trade is an important part of this picture. So is trilateral energy cooperation as North America burnishes its status as a regional energy hub.
Caribbean countries have traditionally depended upon oil-derived products for the bulk of their energy needs often with deleterious effects. But a recent IDB study argues that natural gas would decrease electricity prices and result in lower economic and environmental costs for countries of the region. We caught up with Jed Bailey, one of the study’s authors, to discuss the outlook for natural gas in the region, including sources of supply, potential points of entry, and the debate over LNG vs CNG.
With the so-called “Golden Era of Natural Gas” showing no signs of abating, the Institute of the Americas caught up with Mikkal Herberg, Research Director of the Energy Security Program at the National Bureau of Asian Research to discuss global natural gas prospects, US LNG exports, and why “not all shales are created equal”.
It’s 2014 and Peru is at a crossroads. The country’s upstream contract framework was cited as a model for Mexico’s energy reforms yet many in the energy industry cite a long list of hurdles stifling oil and natural gas growth. The Institute of the Americas spoke to Dr. Beatriz Merino, President of the Peruvian Hydrocarbons Society to get her perspective on the need for reforms in Peru’s hydrocarbons sector (in Spanish).
After a quick peek into our crystal ball, we’ve put together a short list of major energy stories to watch this year. Some are a logical continuation of trends in 2013 – think Mexico’s momentous energy reforms and the continued surge in oil and gas production in the United States. Others figure less in international headlines but are worth keeping an eye on such as Peru.
