Hello and welcome to the June edition of Hear…Read This!  Once again, it features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month. This month, we’re chatting about our views on Dreams and Shadows by C. Robert Cargill and A Necklace of Raindrops by Joan Aiken, illustrated by Jan Pienkowski. Unknowingly, Kate and Gav have both chosen books with a fairytale theme, both with a very different tone… Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon of SavidgeReads and The Readers, Gav of GavReads and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words sharing their thoughts. Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes! Section 1: Dreams and Shadows by C. Robert Cargill  This was Gav’s selection, written by a man better known as a screenwriter of films such as Sinister and a film critic on Ain’t It Cool News. This is C. Robert Cargill’s first novel; will we be impressed and bewitched by its magical tale, or will it be a journey to hell? Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before we move on to our second book of the episode, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month: Rob has enjoyed Solo by William Boyd, Simon recommends The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer, Gav thought The Ghost Riders of Ordebec by Fred Vargas was a great read and Kate enjoyed Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith. Section 3: A Necklace of Raindrops by Joan Aiken, illustrated by Jan Pienkowski  This was Kate’s ‘classic’ choice, in fact a little too classic as we were shocked to discover that this wonderful book, first published in 1968, is currently out of print. We were all eventually able to get hold of copies, read the eight original children’s fairytales and share our thoughts. Was this just a trip down memory lane or are these tales as sweet as when we were little? And finally… Here are next month’s choices by Gav and Kate:   We hope you enjoy listening.

Hello and welcome to the May edition of Hear…Read This!  Once again, it features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month. This month, we’re discussing what we thought of Three Graves Full by Jamie Mason and The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall. Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon of SavidgeReads and The Readers, Gav of GavReads and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words sharing their thoughts. Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes! Section 1: Three Graves Full by Jamie Mason  This was Simon’s choice and chosen as a book that is said to combine comedy with a murder mystery “of Hitchcockian proportions”. It’s a debut, plus it’s published by One, a new imprint from Pushkin Press, so we were all keen to see if we’d enjoy it. Will it be more Rear Window or more backdoor recycling? Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before we move on to our second book of the episode, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month: Rob has enjoyed Sex Criminals, by Matt Fraction by Chip Zdarsky, Simon recommends Bonita Avenue by Peter Buwalda, Gav thought Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris was a great read and Kate has kicked off a new obsession by reading Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne-Jones. Section 3: The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall  This was Rob’s ‘classic’ choice, although in this case it’s a classic more because of its cult status - it was actually published in 2007. Hall was featured on Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists 2013, and The Raw Shark Texts is known as a combination of The Matrix, Jaws and Neverwhere. Where we bitten by this book? And finally…  Here are next month’s choices by Gav and Kate: Dreams and Shadows by C. Robert Cargill and A Necklace of Raindrops by Joan Aiken We hope you enjoy listening.

Hello and welcome to the April edition of Hear…Read This!  Once again it features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month. This month, we’re talking about our views of Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick and Under The Skin by Michel Faber. We decided to do Gav’s ‘classic’ choice, Under The Skin, second as in order to discuss it, we have to reveal something about the plot. There are no spoilers for Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock, so we hope you’ll listen to that and then decide if you want to keep going (we don’t think it’ll spoil the book if you do). Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon and Gav of The Readers, a Book Based Banter podcast, and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words, exploring storytelling in all its forms sharing their thoughts. Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes! Section 1: Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick  This was Kate’s selection and chosen as a book that deals with mental illness but that has also been marketed to adults and young adults too, so she was curious to see how it would come across. Also, she loved the film of The Silver Linings Playbook, adapted from the novel by Matthew Quick. Will this live up to expectations? Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before we move on to the second book for debate, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month: Simon recommends The Farm by Tom Rob Smith, Gav has enjoyed Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor, Rob read The Accident by Chris Pavone and Kate loved The Last Wild by Piers Torday. Section 3: Under The Skin by Michel Faber   This was Gav’s classic choice, a shorter novel that mixes literary sensibilities with a hint of science fiction. None of us have seen the film version that has recently been released but we’d all heard reviews which reveal an important plot point. Will it be literary enough for Simon and Rob? Will it be science fiction enough for Gav and Kate? And finally…  Here are next month’s choices by Rob and Simon: We hope you enjoy listening.

Hello and welcome to the slightly delayed March edition of Hear…Read This!  Once again it features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month. This month the books we are discussing are The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike and Resurrection by Wolf Haas.Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon and Gav of The Readers, a Book Based Banter podcast, and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words, exploring storytelling in all its forms sharing their thoughts.  Beware, as there are mild spoilers for both books! Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes! Section 1: The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike This was Simon's selection and chosen partly to give Gavin a literary genre read but I don't think any Simon, Gavin or Kate were prepared for how far the novel deviated from the film. Rob hadn't seen the film so didn't need to adjust to the women portrayed by Cher, Pfeiffer and Sarandon being a little different. Not that we linger on the book but we do discuss Updike's portrayal of women views on feminism in a lively discussion. Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before we move on to the second book for debate, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month. Section 3: Resurrection by Wolf Hass A crime in translation which asks all three readers, have we found a new favourite detective or have we started scrapping the bottom of the translated crime barrel? And finally...  Here are next month's choices by Kate and Gavin:   We hope you enjoy listening.

Hello and welcome to the February edition of Hear…Read This!  Once again it features four hosts and two books, making one book club every month.  This month the books we are discussing are The Complete Short Stories by Oscar Wilde and The Days of the Deer by Liliana Bodoc.  Take a listen and you’ll hear Simon and Gav of The Readers, a Book Based Banter podcast, and Kate and Rob of Adventures With Words, exploring storytelling in all its forms sharing their thoughts.  Beware, as there are mild spoilers for both books! Don’t forget, you can follow us on Twitter, like the page on Facebook, and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes! Section 1:  The Complete Short Stories by Oscar Wilde This was Kate’s selection and our first short story collection in the book group. Can Oscar Wilde live up to all our expectations? Each of us discusses which of the stories were our favourites from the collection, including The Canterville Ghost, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, The Happy Prince and The Nightingale and the Rose. There are a variety of genres within so there really is something for everyone here. Section 2: What Else We’ve Been Reading Before we move on to the second book for debate, the hosts discuss some of the other books they have been reading this month. Gavin has been reading The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M Harris, Rob has been reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, Kate has been reading Insignia by SJ Kincaid and Simon hasn’t particularly been enjoying reading Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder… Section 3: The Days of the Deer by Liliana Bodoc.  In our second title for discussion, Gav brings us a book from an author who has been described as ‘the Tolkien of the Americas’. Can it live up to that high accolade?  Simon was on record as saying that he wasn’t looking forward to reading this one but are we in for a surprise? And finally… We reveal our choices for next month.  Simon has chosen the our older title and gone for The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike, while Rob is choosing our new release and settled for some crime in the form of Resurrection by Wolf Haas. We’d love you to read them and join us next time on Monday 17th March!
