Our guest this morning was Barri Kaplan Bonapart - nationally recognized attorney and mediator specializing in tree law. Quoth Barri, "It's rarely actually about the trees." That is to say, it's people who have problems with trees in the middle, on property lines, damaging foundations, blocking views, making neighbors angry at each other. These are the kinds of situations that call for mediation and, as a last resort, lawsuits. Barri has been on this program before to discuss such things. Barri has recently published a book, aimed at informing people getting involved in disputes involving trees -- Understanding Tree Law: A Handbook for Practitioners is available from Barri's web site, Tree Law Dot Com.

Our Guest this hour was Nick Crawford of Davey Tree Service. Nick is a certified arborist, and is active with a group of professional arborists trying to raise awareness of a new threat to Califormia's Live Oaks --the ones that don't lose their leaves. They are vulnerable to a beetle-borne disease called Foamy Bark Canker. The disease is widespread in Southern California already; Nick is trying to help limit its' spread North.
