Patreon Helps Podcasters Get Paid – New Podcast Stats – Dealing with Negativity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on episode 399 we hear how people are getting press credentials with their podcast, we have an interview with Tony from Patreon which is a service that help content creators earn income for their efforts. We also talk about dealing with negative comments, and the new report on podcast statistics. Got A Second For a Quick 10 Question Survey? I'm rethinking my "Podcasting in Six Weeks (https://podcastcoach.wufoo.com/forms/m3lzj4c1nzwmtc/)" class, and would LOVE your input. Thank you in advance. Because of my Podcast - I have Press Credentials [2:34] (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/IVYENVY_ITUNES_300-150x150.jpg)Today Corey from Ivy Envy (http://www.ivyenvy.com) podcast explains how his show on the Chicago Cubs has allowed him to get press credentials from some of the minor league teams, which allowed him to interview the Owner of the Chicago cubs (how cool is that?) Tom Rickets. This is a great example of "scaling/niching down" your content. Instead of doing a podcast on Baseball, do it on the Major leagues. Not just the major league, but a certain division. Not just a certain division, but a specific team. Not only the team, but the minor league team, the PA announcer, and all the behind the scenes information that someone who is truly passionate about that team would love. Corey is going to explain how in the future he got a major league rule changed. COOL. Check him out at www.ivyenvy.com (http://www.ivyenvy.com) or subscribe in iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ivy-envy-chicago-cubs-podcast/id306933992?mt=2&uo=4&at=10l5Go). Patreon Helps Content Creators get Paid and Build Community [6:35] (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/patreon.png)Anthony Privitelli is the head of Creator Relations at Patreon. Patreon is similar to a crowd funding tool like Kickstarter, except its ongoing. You can have it set up to have your patrons (your supporters) pay you a monthly contribution. This may have you feeling the pressure to produce content (when you're not feeling creative). This monthly option may be a good fit for those who produce a lot of content and don't want to charge their patrons numerous times per month. The other options is to get paid per post. Your patron can set a limit if they want (so if you put out 30 posts in a month they can cap their support at 5). You post can be audio, video, or anything downloadable. They do not host the media. Tom Merrit (http://www.patreon.com/acedtect) (formerly of this week in tech) is making around $9000 a month. He has over 3000 patrons The D6 Generation (http://www.patreon.com/TheD6Generation) is making $232 per episode with 74 patrons The Angry Chicken (http://www.patreon.com/tac) is making $176 per month with 43 patrons. Mike Falzone (http://www.patreon.com/mikefalzone) is making $371 per podcast with 49 patrons (side note he uses podomatic is in a world of hurt as his audience is too big - see I told you Podomatic is the Devil (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/podomatic-devil/)). Typical Video Strategy You can create a video and post it on YouTube (free) and mark the video as "unlisted" so that only people with the link to that video can see it (so you give the link to the video to patreon and it displays on your Patreon page - and you specify its for patrons only. Hot Spot for Amounts? The average pledge is $7. The hot spot is between $1 and $5 per post. Anthony Privitelli Video Interview Here is the Hangout On Air that I did with Tony, and you will see a little behind the scenes of my account. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A7z_tX4oMc&feature=share My Amazon Account Has Been Banned For Life[31:18] I wrote about this earlier in the week (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/banned-life-amazon-associates-one-strike-policy/). My advice would be to NOT redirect your audience to Amazon through any kind of special link. In listening to some of the "bigger" podcasts,

 Blogger Bridge – Accents – Interview Chunking – We’re Moving | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:08

Today in episode 398 we continue our discussion with Chris Christiansen of amateurtravelor.com as he is the developer behind Bloggerbridge.com which is a great way for businesses and potential guests to find podcasters/bloggers. You can find it at www.bloggerbridge.com (http://www.bloggerbridge.com) Because of my podcast [3:13] Jeff from the Once Upon a Time podcast (http://www.onceuponatimepodcast.com/) is now doing a podcast with his wife on the Television show Once Upon a Time. He has had actors from the show call in, and he went to watch a shooting of the show where he got to meet the actors and have lunch with them. He is now having an adventure with his wife. Do You Break Up Interviews into Two Parts? [10:15] If you have a long interview should you break it into two parts? For me there is no such thing as too long, only too boring. If the interview can be broken into two complete segments I think that's ok. I hate when I'm in the middle of a great conversation and the break in and say I have to wait until the next episode to hear the rest. As my interview with Chris went long last week, I cut this portion about blogger bridge from the interview and I'm using it today. Blogger Bridge Helps Connect Podcasters With Businesses[11:55] Blogger Bridge is a website that helps connect companies with relevant bloggers, writers, podcasters, videographers and other content creators. Some people should not work together. Find the right match of skills, approach, content and style for your brand. For more information go to www.bloggerbridge.com (http://www.bloggerbridge.com) Podertainment Magazine is Live You can order your subscription by going to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/podertainment (http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/podertainment)(affiliate link). It's $12 a year or $2.99 per issue. Should I podcast if I have a Accent? [19:05] Lode of http://sotospeakshow.blogspot.com asks, "If English is a second language, should I podcast in English?" This will be completely subjective based on each person, but for me your accent is fine. I would recommend buying a domain and pointing it at your blogspot site. What About Using Libsyn as a Website [24:55] Bill from the ywam podcast (www.ywampodcast.com) asks about using Libsyn.com as a media host and website like Rob Walch does on tii.libsyn.com ? This would be a way to save $7 a month that you would normally pay to a company like HostGator. Its a basic looking website, and you will need to know html to be able to edit it. I would use libsyn for hosting, and something like tumblr.com (IF YOU MUST GO FREE) for your website and submit the libsyn feed (not the Feedburner feed) to iTunes (and get feedburner out of the picture). I spoke about this back in 2008.  (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/236/) You can get a free month at libsyn.com using the coupon code " sopfree." Phone System Checks [33:25] I'm not testing a magic jack (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0062P7ISY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0062P7ISY&linkCode=as2&tag=sop-20) as I have tested Uberconference (I said ubercast on the show), and it works fine on its own. It drops callers left and right (as does Blog Talk Radio and Callinstudio.com) . So we will see. Patreon Helps Content Creators Get Paid [37:15] This is a system that like a kickstart.com campaign that is on going, or you can set it up to be paid every time you release an episode. I will have a representative from Patreon  (http://www.patreon.com/podcastcoach)on the show next week. You can see my example at http://www.patreon.com/podcastcoach (http://www.patreon.com/podcastcoach) and support the show. Start Podcasting in Six Weeks is Postponed [38:11] I'm moving the School of Podcasting to a VPS server to make it faster. Basically I'm getting more traffic than my current shared hosting can handle. I'm moving to Host Dime (http://www.hostdime.com/ref/194754) ($60 a month). It's not going to be fun,

Chris Christensen from Amateur Traveler – Serious Hobbies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:49

Today we interview Chris Christensen  of the  Amateur Traveler (http://amateurtraveler.com/) podcast. He has been doing since 2005, and has won awards for his podcast(s) and been featured in national magazine's and newspapers. You can see all the places he's visited by viewing his episode map (http://amateurtraveler.com/map/) on his website. He is also the developer of Blogger Bridge (http://www.bloggerbridge.com) which helps bloggers and podcasters get guests (more on that next week). In Today's Interview You Learn: Chris uses Linkedin to find guests and places to promote his show Chris started in one direction and changed later. So don't feel bad if you change your format. Your podcast can often be a work in progress. Chris networks with other people in his niche (traveler podcasts) and they often appear on each other's shows He has a clearly defined audience profile that he uses to determine what will (and will not ) make it on his podcast. His podcast is used to help people learn English Chris takes action to find sponsors. In the beginning they didn't come to him Dave's Tour of Duty [42:45] Scott Johnson from the Computer Tutor Show (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-computer-tutor/id554321710?mt=2&uo=4&at=10l5Go) sent in a comment after listening to the Podcast Review Show on the One Word Go Show (http://www.podcastreviewshow.com/29). You can hear this example of a podcast Dave does not connect with at podcastreviewshow.com/29 (http://www.podcastreviewshow.com/29) In general great content does not happen by accident. Keith and the Girl (http://www.keithandthegirl.com) explain how they have always taken their podcast serious. They take four hours to produce a one hour show. In my interview with Keith and the Girl, (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/keith-and-the-girl-share-ultimate-podcasting-tips/) Keith said that even though they were podcasting in a spare bedroom, they planned out their show, and didn't treat it like "just a podcast." The Serious Hobbiest I did some research and if I joined a bowling league in Rocky River Ohio, my local alley would charge me $4 a game. If we bowled 4 games a week that would be $64 a month. It would cost $184 to by a ball, shoes, bag, cleaning rag, etc. It costs me $20 for media hosting, $9 for website hosting, and $1 a month for my podcast. That means it cost me $30 a month. This is HALF of what it would cost to be on a bowling league. I can spend $50 on an ATR 2100 microphone and be good to go using free podcasting software like Audacity and Garage band.   If You Must Podcast For Free (Please, Please, Please Don't) Scott Boyd wants to know how to podcast on the super cheap. Here is his website (http://members.iinet.net.au/~jarrica@netspace.net.au/scott%20page.html). He uses Absolute RSS Editor (http://www.alentum.com/rsseditor/) ($30) to edit his RSS.  He uses Filezilla (https://filezilla-project.org/)to upload your files. You can build your website using a site like Tumblr, or Blogger. You can use Archive.org as a media host. You can use blubrry.com for stats. Then you would have to use Feedburner (a really bad idea in my book) to add your iTunes information. We hope that Archive.org doesn't slow down your downloads TOO MUCH when you get busy. We hope that feedburner is still around if you have to move your feed (when you finally decide to "do it for real). So why don't I promote podcasting for free? Because I don't believe in it. I think anything worth doing is worth doing well. If you are so strapped for cash that $30 a month is too much money, then go to Moneyplansos.com (http://www.Moneyplansos.com) and listen to Steve Stewart tell you how to manage your finances. I'm pretty sure just cutting out soft drinks, coffee, or your TV cable would give you enough money to pay for your podcast. When I was younger I moved from a small apartment to a bigger one. Then later I moved to a house. If I had to do it all again,

 Podcast Promos 101 – Podcasting Stats | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:29

In today's show I talk about "back in the day" when people use to create promos (a short 30, or 60 second spot) that helped spread the word about their show. You often would "swap" promos with other similar podcasts. I'm not sure why (fear maybe that people would leave your show) this kind of went by the wayside. As word of mouth is the BEST form of promotion, I still like the idea of a podcast promo. This was inspired by a recent episode of the Podcaster's Roundtable where we talked about the Podcast Promotion Police. iHeart Radio Stats DJ City from the Japan Experience (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/tjx-the-japan-xperience/id294899993?mt=2) podcast asks if it's worth putting a show on Spreaker to get into iHeart Radio. I looked at last week's episode of the "Ask the Podcast Coach" show and found this: Libsyn 72% Spreaker 19% Stitcher 7% iHeart Radio 2% In general I'm getting about 4% from iHeart radio. I recommend that everyone be on Stitcher, I'm not sure I'm "All in" in spreaker. I am looking forward to their future plans. While I have over three thousand followers on spreaker only .4 (not four, .4) actually listen to the show. This reminds me of the early days of myspace when everyone followed everyone for the sake of following them. You don't see how long people listen on iHeart radio, and I have to login to Spreaker to see my stats (where Stitcher stats are now seen in my Libsyn or Blubrry stats). If you get accepted by iHeart radio, you lose the RSS feed on the spreaker website (not such a bad thing). Also, if you import your show Spreaker still messes up your ID3 tags and branding (something they are aware of) and you then have to check your stats in two places. The only reason I listed the Logical Weight Loss podcast is this show now has a membership area and I'm trying to get my show in front of as many people (and I turn off the ability to download on the site - which may disable that file from being on iHeart radio. It's complicated, and Spreaker has lots of things coming down the road. Right now they still need some tweaking. Remember, when you first start out live you are adding LOTs of complexity and you don't have an audience yet. It might make sense to podcast for a few months and then decide later to possibly go live. Remember when you are live you have to have a schedule. You can't sleep in. You can't get caught in traffic. You have to start your show at the same time for every show if you want people to find you.  Streaming Stats J. Mason Mitchell asked about the streaming system I use for schoolofpodcasting.fm (http://schoolofpodcasting.fm) I have schoolofpodcasting.fm (http://www.schoolofpodcasting.fm) which is a streaming version of my podcasting tips. It features past shows, and a mix of the "More Podcast Money" show, the "Power of Podcasting" show and more. James asked what kind of numbers I get. Over the last 2 days I've had 32 listeners from 18 different countries. (not huge numbers, but it's only $12 a month). My second top country is Thailand. My peak listeners are 8 listeners on Sunday night. I use a company called Listen2myradio.com (http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/listen2myradio) If you're interested in stats check out simplymeasured.com (http://www.simplymeasured.com) to check out how you're doing on social media Dave on the Start Talking and Recording Podcast One of the things that I love about the Start talking and Recording Today show is Nick talks podcasting, but also digs a little deeper into the podcaster's likes and dislikes so you get information that you probably won't get on other podcasts. Check it out at Startpodcastingnow.com (http://startpodcastingnow.com/015-school-is-in-session-dave-jackson-of-the-school-of-podcasting/)   Podcast Promo Tips 1. Get a domain name.  George Hrab Takes Advantage of Every Opportunity Podcasting Provides | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:03

Today we interview George Hrab as he looks back of seven years of podcasting as he started out wanting to make his friends laugh, and ended up touring the world.  Because of my Podcast [1:26] James Neuman of the Human Perfofmance Tools (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/human-performance-tools-for/id686963370?mt=2&uo=4&at=10l5Go) (www.humanperformancetools.com (http://www.humanperformancetools.com) )podcast was asked to do a presentation about using podcasting at a conference for his industry. He was asked by the head of the conference to do this presentation. It turns out that many people at this conference were his listeners. The presentation was about his podcast and his blog and how he is using it in his industry. This is one of the advantages of being first in your industry to start a podcast. James is stoked that when you put in Human Performance Tools he ranks very high in Google. The cool thing James only has six episode out.  George Hrab Takes Advantage of Every Opportunity [9:00] George Hrab (http://about.me/georgehrab) launched his Geologic Podcast (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/geologic-podcast/id213468056?mt=2&uo=4&at=10l5Go) seven years ago because his friend Slau (http://www.sessionswithslau.com)told him he really needed to launch one. He thought he might make his friend, or his Dad laugh a little. George has been on the show in the past (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/producing-your-podcast-from-segments-with-george-hrab/) talking about his "module" style of podcasting. George is one of them most creative people I know. I love his songs for the Periodic table (http://geologicpodcast.com/the_geologic_podcast_episode_72). He is a full time musician, and has used podcasting to get his foot in the door (and then kick the door down by being "undeniable"). From this interview we learn that: (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/geo.jpg) 1. George hasn't missed a weekly show (hardly ever). 2. He has been on five continents 3. Met most of his heroes 4. His album releases have been more successful than before. 5. Your talent and skills won't get you work, but they will allow you to keep the jobs you get. You need to get in the right circles of people who can get you work 6. Dragoncon lead to the playing music between speakers at the JREF (http://www.randi.org/site/)Convention. That lead to him being he MC of the event. 7. Each opportunity came from someone telling other people  about George (good ol' word of mouth). 8. George has EXTREMELY loyal fans who produce an episode every year to honor George.  9. George says his true talent is editing. To listen through the eyes of his listeners and ask, "is this working?, is this boring?". He doesn't want to just "Mail it in" even though he has the skills to do that.  10. How do you succeed at podcasting? Do it. Pick a schedule, and keep doing it on that schedule. George sees himself as a writer. He needs to leave time to create great content.  11. Realize that all episodes won't be great. Don't quit. It will get better. Don't quit. He's been doing this for seven years.  12. Imagine your audience sitting in one room. 600 listeners would be a big room.  13. He starts every morning answering emails.  14. Most of Wednesday (6-10 hours) is devoted to his 45- 50 minute podcast. 15. He got his highest music sales by giving away his entire album for free. 16. When he ran a contest that the winner was in Norway, his audience planned a tour throughout Europe (and later Australia).  17. George has added a "Premium" club. Don't think you'll get 25%. A good number is 1% of your audience. He makes sure that members get value.  18. When he promotes his premium membership, he uses different commercials to make sure to not bore the audience. 19. His audience was HAPPY that he gave them a chance to support him by giving him cash.  20 Not everything has worked.

iHeart Radio Stats – Mignon Fogarty “Grammar Girl” and 2014 Predictions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:48

Today we talk about some updates to the spreaker platform where you can now see how many people are listening on iHeart radio. We also hear from Mignon Fogarty who has appeared on Oprah and the Today to talk about grammar. Because of My Podcast... [1:20] Rem from the Sci-Fi Movie Podcast (http://www.scifimoviepodcast.com) has this to say. Because of my podcast: My podcast is now being downloaded over 2000 times a month. Building great friendships, and meeting people from all over the world I'm going to the New Media Expo I no longer feel restless or bored at home I have a greater sense of purpose, direction, and very clear career path. I'm meeting podcasters I've listened to for years. I'm building relatinships with people I never would've met otherwise I've change from full time to part time so I can invest more time in my podcast.  iHeart Radio Stats Now Available on the Spreaker Platform I have used Ask the Podcast coach in the past for the Ask the Podcast Coach show and it allows me to be on iHeart radio. Here is a quick video that shows the break down of where this content is being consumed. http://youtu.be/Kei6axtcgGo I always say, the best way to build your platform is to have a self hosted Wordpress website where all other platforms point at your website. I prefer Libsyn.com and blubrry.com as they offer the ability to have an unlimited back catalog and they make it easy to leave their service if you want to (Spreaker does not allow you to do this). Also if you use their RSS importing tool it currently deletes your ID3 tags inside your media (a problem that have noted and are working to fix). Also they create an additional RSS feed for your podcast (I would prefer it points at my RSS feed that I control). I'm glad to see them improving their interface and adding more functionality.  Don't get too excited if you have a lot of followers on spreaker.com When I crunched my numbers only 2% of my followers are actually listening to my show. This reminds me of the early days of MySpace where people just followed in hopes to get a follow back.  If you are using Spreaker as a media host, don't use the link to the download link under the "Download" option you will see in the video that it doesn't point to an actual mp3.  Mignon Forgarty Her Podcast Story [10:25] (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/MignonGreenHeadshot6.png)Mignon Forgarty is a podcaster who has been on Oprah, and the Today Show. She is the author of many books. (http://www.amazon.com/Mignon-Fogarty/e/B001JS0XMW/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&qid=1389557270&sr=1-2-ent&tag=sop-20) She's launch a podcasting network at www.quickanddirtytips.com (http://www.quickanddirtytips.com) as well as written her own App, and now is working on a card game. She has done this by building her Grammar Girl brand.  Her first podcast took too much time and she decided to follow another passion.  She hates her first episode (like every other podcaster on the planet).  You see where creating content takes time. She is not "winging it." She won a podcast award this year.  She started by creating content to attract an audience, and now her audience feeds her ideas for new episodes.  If you are being courted by a big book publisher, get a book agent.  Be careful creating a networks with friends.  The Quick and Dirty tip hosts use scripts for their podcasts.  Previous to being on Oprah she was contacted by Martha Stewart.  If you're interviewing Mignon, she likes it when you do more than ask her grammar questions. Balancing family and work is hard as her husband Patrick also works from home. She hopes to devote more time to family this year. She often re-writes an episode if the rules have changed.  You don't need to buy the most expensive equipment to start.  Dave's 2014 Podcast Predictions   Last 5 in 5

The Podcast Success Formula – Names Not Numbers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:06

I'm back from New Media Expo. It was a blast and I'm sure I will be talking more about it in the future. I liked the opening key note, but for me it was the next session that really hit home with me. It was by one of my favorite people Michael Hyatt (http://michaelhyatt.com/). He has so much experience and wisdom, and yet is a person who is always looking for ways to improve. His session for me set the bar very high for the following sessions. The only session that came close to his, was another session that featured him along with some other heroes of mine Ray Edwards (http://www.rayedwards.com), Dan Miller (http://www.48days.com), and my friend Cliff Ravenscraft (http://www.gspn.tv). Why did I like Michael's session so much? Simple. He gave me knowledge, and then gave me actionable items. On my Logical Weight Loss Podcast I talk about knowledge is only power when you act on it. By the end of Michael's my reminder list on my phone had grown quite a bit. As I listened to different sessions on growing your audience (including my own with Daniel J Lewis and Ray Oretga), I saw a common theme that propped up over and over. I'm calling it the Podcast Success Formula. You Ready? WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE? Figure out who your target audience is. Who and where are they. Keep asking questions about them until you have a crystal clear picture of them. I was reading some stuff on the plane ride home that said some people will find a picture in a magazine and cut it out and give their target audience a name. WHAT WOULD MAKE THEM GO YIPEE! What does that person want? What do they need? What makes them upset? What would make their day. Figure it out, and then give it to them. Be sure to not talk AT them. Raise your hand if you’re tired of being talked at. This is not broadcasting, this is solecasting. I like that word and not because I just made it up. I put a lot of my soul into this podcast. I work hard at making great content. In the end it is listened by one sole person at a time (typically). PUT OUT THE BEST PODCAST YOU CAN Put some thought into your brand, and your content. I interviewed some successful podcasters. I asked Michael Hyatt and Ray Edwards about how long it took them to create an episode. Everyone clocked in with AT LEAST a four to one ratio. That means a single minute of podcast takes four minutes to produce. A 15 minute podcast would take an hour. Good content is not cheap. It takes time. BE CONSISTENT Pick a schedule and go with it. Make sure you hit it. Consistency is only about schedule, it’s also about content. When Ray Ortega comes out with content, it is of a consistent quality. I was going to “Throw something together” Monday and put it out (I haven’t missed a Monday is many moons). I didn’t do it. Why? Because I don’t want to put my name on something that I’m not going to be proud of . If it’s not going to move you to laugh, cry, think, groan, or entertain and educate you I’m not going to put it out. MAKE REAL RELATIONSHIPS I walked away my mantra for 2014. Last year I spent a large amount of time researching what makes good content. This year, I’m researching you. I want to know more about you. My montra is “Names not numbers.” What do I mean, I mean I when I hit record on the microphone I’m thinking about Craig, and Brock the soon to be podcast cowboy. I’m talking about Amy who nervously introduced herself and explained that she listens to the podcaster’s roundtable. I could go on. It makes me very nervous. Why? Because my memory is crap. I got fired from a job when I couldn’t remember the amount of details required. I would look at 17 screens of information in about 10 seconds, and have to recall what I saw with a 96% accuracy. I’ve never been fired from a training job, and when I hear memory is required I get nervous. That’s OK. We are not defined by our mistakes. I’m the Internets have all sort of tips for remembering names. LET YOUR FREAK FLAG FLY In the song If Six Was Nine,

Best Podcast Ever | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:00

Today I asked my audience to share what was their FAVORITE podcast. They could only pick ONE. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Here is a PDF of the show notes for you to download and share. Speaking of sharing. If you would like to send a tweet about this episode you can do so below     Betty in the Sky With Suitcase Her podcast page: http://betty.libsyn.com/ (http://betty.libsyn.com/)   Betty in the sky with a suitcase. This is great. Betty is an airline flight attendant. She's been podcasting for years and what she does is she gives us stories of things that she encounters as she travels. Well, these stories, are  hysterical. It's stuff you could never make up. But also, she's got this totally lovable personality. She's witty, she's smart, she's humble - humble's big with me. She's a flight attendant that we always could encounter when we travel. If you listen to her episodes, you know probably all there is to know about Betty and you just might fall in love with her. Oh, did I say that out loud? Well anyway, it's not just me. Not too long ago, a musician composed and professionally recorded a song for her, to the tune of Benny and the Jets by Elton John except it's Betty and the Jets. It's just brilliant. Anyway, her home page is bettyinthesky.net (http://bettyinthesky.net) which takes you to kind of all the things that she does including to her podcast which is at betty.libson.com (http://betty.libson.com). That's Betty in the sky with a suitcase, probably my absolute favorite podcast.    Submitted by Max Flight of Airplanegeeks.com (http://www.airplanegeeks.com) Podcasting Aviation Greatness Since 2008. The Airplane Geeks talk about the latest in the airline industry, general aviation, and military aviation. If it flies, we are talking about it. He also does theuavdigest.com (http://theuavdigest.com)   Security Now It's hosted by Leo LaPorte and Steve Gibson. Of course, everyone knows who Leo LaPorte is, he's the tech guy, he has a radio show. And his co-host, Steve Gibson, is the creator of Spin Right, which is a program for hard drive maintenance and even some data recovery. Well, they do a show each week that runs for about an hour, hour and a half, and they talk about everything related to computer security, and I'll tell you, it gets extremely technical. They talk about passwords, internet scams, viruses, just about anything related to personal computer security. The podcast itself doesn't have its own website, but you can get some information at Steve's company website, which is GRC.com/securitynow (http://GRC.com/securitynow). Or just google 'security now podcast'. The other reason I like it is because it keeps me on the cutting edge of what's going on, and that's information that I can often pass onto my own podcast listeners.   Submitted by Scott Johnson  of the Computer Tutor Podcast (http://www.computertutorflorida.com): I do the computer tutor podcast (http://www.computertutorflorida.com) every Monday morning and each show is about 10 minutes or so, and I talk about a computer tip or trick or something that people need to know about. And, the information for that is at my website which is computertutorflorida.com (http://www.computertutorflorida.com). Thanks very much Dave, keep up the great work.   No Agenda Show The No Agenda Show (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/no-agenda/id269169796?mt=2&uo=4&at=10l5Go) with Adam Curry and John C. Dvorak, which is at Noagendashow.com (http://www.Noagendashow.com). The No Agenda Show is a news analysis podcast, and so they take the news and they go deeper than you would get on any mainstream show. They do something that I think we all wish our politicians would do, and actually read the legislation, and look at what it means and how it affects us, and they look at all the little hidden things that are hidden in the legislation that gets done. They also look at different events around the world,

Preparing Your Guests – Removing the Noise From Your Life and Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:36

Today we have we some great tips about getting your guest ready to appear on your show, we have a quick podcast promotion tip, we hear what stitcher.com is doing good, and what Spreaker.com is doing very, very, bad (reminds of the days of Podshow), and I talk about getting ready for 2014. Spreaker.com Hijacking RSS Feeds And Erasing Your Brand [4:50] I wrote about this on previous blog (http://schoolofpodcasting.com/why-spreakers-rss-importer-is-a-bad-idea/). Spreaker.com keeps adding features, however you need to look long and hard at what they are doing to your file and your feed. It's not good.  Stitcher Updates Their Backend [16:22] Stitcher.com continues to invest in their platform that is continuing to gain ground. Rob Walch from Libsyn.com states that on the Android platform it is the top way people consume podcasts. Stitcher also is now available in certain cars (cool!). Now they have added the feature where  podcasters can change what RSS feed is being used to populate Stitcher. It also has access to stats that show 10 million people are recommending podcasts to other people on their platform every day. The average Stitcher user listens to 8 hours of podcasts a month.  Speed Up Playback on Stitcher One of the things I LOVE about Stitcher (and you can do this on the Podcasts app by Apple) is the ability to speed up the playback of a podcast. The other thing I LOVE about Stitcher is they have a web based player. This allows me to dial into all my favorite shows on the web, and pick up right where I left off. The bad news (or so I thought) was there was no way to speed up the playback on the web. Well one quick email to Stitcher and I found out you can use the number keys to speed things up to 3X and use the space bar as a pause button. COOL! The Stitcher awards are open until December 24th. If you haven't nominated your favorite shows go to http://stitcher.promotw.com/ (http://stitcher.promotw.com/) (I would love to have "Ask the Podcast Coach" in the best new show category).  Quick Tip To Initiate Communications [22:00] When you are adding the ID3 tags to your audio put your phone number at the end. So my line might reading "Thinning the Heard - Call in and Comment: 888-563-3228" This wouldn't be on the website title, but just for your audio title. Some players actually make this field scroll.  Getting Your Guest Ready [23:45] On this week's "Ask the Podcast Coach" show (where you can call in Live for free podcast consulting) my co-host Jim Collison was stating how they do a pre interview and setup with their guest. This takes all the guesswork out of the situation, and in some cases they will actually ship their guest an Audio Technica 2100 microphone as this microphone is typically around $40 or less (the price fluctuates). It costs about $10 to $15 to ship (more or less) and it ensures that the person has great audio on their side.  Thinning the Heard - Taking the Noise Removal Tool To Your Life [29:17] The old saying is failure to plan, is planning to fail. It makes a great bumper sticker but there is more to it than that. In a world of non stop stimulation, we can very easily be pulled into a million different directions that all sound good at the time. So today I'm taking a slight tangent to talk about planning. I spoke about this last week, but today I want to sharpen the axe some more.  This year  (being a teacher) I wanted to invest in myself and continue to grow. I decided to dive deep into what makes great content. I studied different blogs, books, and signed up for some courses. After all knowledge is power. Well knowledge is power only if its acted upon. It turns out that in between doing audio editing for clients, doing consulting calls, and recording my own podcasts that I wasn't doing anything with the content. In many cases I had sniffed it, but never digested it.  So over the next few weeks I'm going to look at all the classes I'm taking, all the materials, newsletters,

Andrew Zarian Podcasting as a Career | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:36

Andrew Zarian started podcasting in 2009. Today he shares his story and his insights on how he great the Guys From Queens Network (http://gfqnetwork.com) from a hobby ("My first podcast was awful") into a his full time job. The interview is around 50 minutes long and in it you will learn. * You have to focus on building your audience before you can monetize it * It was almost a year and a half before he was approached by a sponsor * There is a lot of prep that goes into shows about technology * While he gets a big spike by producing a live show, for every 10 people that listen to the recording there are 3 people who caught it live. * Matching the right sponsor to the podcast is crucial for success. * He is using podtrac.com (http://www.podtrac.com) for to help him with finding sponsors. * You need to prove you are bringing traffic to your sponsor * If he had to do again, he would probably rename his network.  ChatWing Questions, Understanding Media Hosting, | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:24

In this episode of Ask The Podcast Coach Jim has some questions about Chatwing which is a free chat system that you can use if you're doing something live. I had previously used rumbletalk, but couldn't afford the 32 a month fee. Google Chrome Requires a Double Opt In for Flash If you are a regular listener to the live show you know we are always testing new technology. Last Dave couldn't even get spreaker.com to recognize his microphone. This week he seemed to be having a problem with it again. Then he saw at the top of the page ( a gray background with dark gray text) that spreaker.com wanted to access my microphone and video (even though I had just given it permission). When I click on "Approve" (for the second time) it worked. So this week we were able to broadcast on spreaker.com and mixlr.com at the same time. We prefer mixlr.com for their chat service. Whatever service we are using you can always catch us at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/live (http://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/live) Chatwing Features [8:05] Jim uses livestream for his events. Jim had been approached by Chatwing to replace his chat system. He had some questions and since I use it for my group chat (http://chatwing.com/podcastcoach), I answered some questions. Free Service Able to be used on a ipad (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G2X1VIY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00G2X1VIY&linkCode=as2&tag=sop-20)(will double check this) Can play music in the chat and video Premium versions are somewhat confusing (as you buy tokens, and then you buy premium features). Chat is hosted on their site so no bandwidth issues. There are Network you can join in the event that your website doesn't generate enough users to fill up a chat room. Media Hosting Explained I love both Libsyn.com and blubrry.com because you can have an unlimited catalog. They only limit the amount you can upload per month. If you are doing talk, count on half a megabyte per minute so an hour long podcast would be about 30 megs. If you do a weekly show you need (roughly) 120 M per month By having a back catalog you can create an "Audio Business Card" where people can connect with you and hear your expertise. Microphone Bleeding Issues [33:15] Dan is having issues with "Microphone Bleeding." Here are some tips 1. Verify this is an option. Make sure the background noise can be heard under normal circumstances 2. Make sure you and your co-host are looking in opposite directions. 3. You may invest in a portable microphone isolation booth (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G2KP10G/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00G2KP10G&linkCode=as2&tag=sop-20). 4. In some cases you can put a moving blanket (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LXR0UQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B008LXR0UQ&linkCode=as2&tag=sop-20) between you and your co-host to help isolate you Ask The Podcast Coach Now in iTunes Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and never miss another episode, and we are also on Stitcher.   (http://cloudfront.assets.stitcher.com/promo.assets/stitcher-banner-120x90.jpg)
