Patrick is back from Europe and has been recovering from a throat infection. On today's show we talk about the recent price movement. We speculate on what has caused the recent volatility, including the United States Marshal Service announcement that they will be auctioning off some of the bitcoins recovered from Silk Road. We'll explore the recent uproar regarding possible 51% attacks. In a first-ever interview, Patrick talks to Ryan Selkis, the "Two-Bit Idiot", known for his controversial blog that released the leaked Mt. Gox crisis documents earlier this year. There has been a lot of news over the past couple of weeks, including some major new players that began accepting bitcoin and a reversal of policy by Apple.  BITCOIN 2014: Panel – The Buzz Around Bitcoin ATMs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:16

In November 2013, the world’s first Bitcoin ATM opened in Vancouver, Canada allowing users to exchange Bitcoin into cash and vice-versa. Since then, the market has evolved and a variety of Bitcoin ATMs are on the market. Businesses are working hard to make Bitcoin more appealing to people and easier for them to use in day-to-day transactions. The new Bitcoin ATMs will include features that allow people to do all sorts of banking transactions, including transferring or sending Bitcoin to people’s phone numbers instead of to a Bitcoin address. Yet for the average ‘man on the street’ who is unfamiliar with Bitcoin or with Bitcoin ATMs, access to machines is still relatively limited to urban areas and fashionable cafes. What needs to be done to encourage the spread of Bitcoin ATMs, to educate consumers about their full range of uses and to make sure the best market environment is in place for Bitcoin ATMs to become as common as fiat currency ATMs or even to replace them?  BITCOIN 2014: Panel – The Race to Be Your Mobile Wallet | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:05

Money is going mobile and the race is on to become your mobile wallet. Indeed, Forbes recently dubbed the mobile payments industry the $15 trillion gold rush. In 2013, $15 trillion was spent globally on retail transactions of which $1 trillion was via e-commerce and the remaining $14 trillion in physical stores via either cash or credit cards. Research estimates that more of that $14 billion will go digital as smartphones continue to spread. Gartner, for example, estimates that mobile payments will reach $720 billion a year by 2017, up from $235 billion last year. Major players such as Apple, Amazon, Google, PayPal, EBay, Visa and Mastercard among others all want to win the digital wallet. Will Bitcoin be able to keep up with the pace? This panel looks at the steps that need to be taken to help Bitcoin succeed in this race. Download MP3   I'd love to get feedback on the show - what did you like and what did you not like?  BITCOIN 2014: Jeremy Allaire – Bitcoin’s Mainstream Moment | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:13

Bitcoin holds enormous potential to transform industry and society as much as the commercial Web did twenty years ago. From smart contracts to property to payments and insurance, Bitcoin promises vast improvements upon traditional systems of transaction and value exchange. However, Bitcoin’s breakthrough moment into the mainstream will likely be determined not by its ability to replace traditional financial systems, but by its capacity to integrate with and modernize consumer finance. In this keynote session, Circle CEO and Founder Jeremy Allaire examines global industry trends, regulatory developments, and product innovations that will accelerate the mainstream adoption of Bitcoin and improve the way individuals and business use money.  BITCOIN 2014: Wences Casares – Getting to a Billion Bitcoin Users | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:48

How do we bring Bitcoin to the masses? And why should the masses care? Xapo founder and CEO Wences Casares will take us through the history of “money,” back 100,000 years to when humans first lent and bartered. Through this historical lens, Wences will challenge preconceived myths of what constitutes a currency and will lay out the qualities and functions of sound money. Wences will demonstrate Bitcoin’s similarities with the historical path of today’s traditional currencies, as well as its accelerated evolutionary process. Today it is a store of value, tomorrow it will be a payment mechanism, and in the near future it will be a unit of account. The conclusion: A billion Bitcoin users is inevitable. But how and when do we get there? Download MP3   I'd love to get feedback on the show - what did you like and what did you not like?
