I'm finally going to start covering the permaculture principles, starting with Observation and Interaction, or my version: Observation and Adjustment. This episode includes an overview of the principle itself, as well as examples from Tenth Acre Farm.
Today I provide ideas for getting started in the middle of summer with raised beds and planters, aiming for a fall harvest. August is the perfect time for planting fall crops in a raised bed or planter! I also throw-in a rant about faux isolation on airplanes and how that relates to suburban homesteading.
I share a story that reminds me why I'm still proud to be an American, even though I don't always show it. A response to my first listener feedback, some inspiration for the weekend homesteader. A story about feces-contaminated salad mix affecting 15 states and it's barely being reported. Then I wrap-up with a simple, yet enriching example of how the problem is often the solution.
How to avoid burn out in the garden! New research about honey bees disappearing. A very abundant and easy to find medicinal herb called broadleaf plantain. Another garden tip about how to use soaker hoses. Finally, an afternoon rant about the culture of selflessness, and being afraid to invest in yourself.
A beginner's look at cooking & eating greens! I give a strong mention on how to prepare Kale, and how to cook Kale. The health benefits of Kale are covered as well as some Kale nutrition facts. Equally mentioned: Collards, and Chard, as these 3 greens are my absolute favorites!
Without a doubt, the CSA is the best gateway into suburban permaculture homesteading for the average person. This episode will thoroughly answer the question, "What is a CSA?" I provide many examples and stories from nearly 5 years of participation and administration of community supported agriculture programs, along with a strong argument for why this is where you need to start your local food adventure.
A simple beginner's guide for how to make compost without all the scientific mumbo-jumbo. I'll save the science of composting for another episode. Today you learn how to compost using a wire bin, the best diy compost bin project!
My first interview! An inspiring discussion with Bob Staggenborg, who walked away from his job and into the world of Deep Nature Connection and community stewardship. This episode also serves as a good primer for some of the deeper meanings behind Episode 6 - Introduction to the Language of the Birds.
Listen to the story of why we chose suburban homesteading, after many years of thinking the grass is greener on the other side. Growing health, growing community, and growing food in the suburbs has a lot of advantages towards our vision for a new way of living.
Morning Rant Series: Today the episodes spans a number of topics related to retiring with more than money in the bank. You absolutely cannot ignore gold & silver investing, and stocking up tangible goods for your family and for possible trade.
Today I give you a first look into the language of the birds, inspired by the practices I've personally learned from tracker, mentor, and author Jon Young.
Today I use our recent rain garden 2.0 project to cover some high-level topics surrounding rain gardens and answering the question, "What is Water Catchment" on a small suburban scale.
Today I talk about insects in your house, and the master predators: spiders and silverfish. Spiders and silverfish in your house are actually a great thing. Sometimes overcoming fear of spiders starts with learning about their functions, along with a practical exercise for safely removing them from your home vs. killing them.
In this episode I only skim the surface of what Permaculture is. For newcomers to the subject this is a great entry point into the question, "What is permaculture?" The veterans will surely fill-in a few gaps and maybe laugh as they hear another person try to summarize and dance around describing such an interconnected and vast topic.
Today is about the minority of paleo parents. In so many ways, those who are currently in their 50's and 60's have had the largest uneducated exposure to the gargantuan rise of sugar in the Standard American Diet. The younger side of that curve have had an increasing amount of education about the horrible effects of high sugar diets. Even if they choose to ignore the information.
