Summary: What happens when you bring together a sweary, opinionated Irishman who comes from pedigreed cycling stock with a soon-to-be-retired pro bike racer who is also an open mike stand-up comedian? Especially if you pour a couple of beers into them and let them yammer about whatever pro bike race is on at the moment? Listen and find out. "Race Radio" is a freewheeling conversation that strays all over the place, but always brings you right back to the heart of things – these guys know and love to watch and talk bike racing. For the next three weeks, the conversation will center around the 100th edition of the Tour de France, but the occasional random subject matter might find its way into the conversation. In Episode 14 Mike and Derek host their own version of the Algonquin round table for two, and exchange barbs and witty repartee for the better part of an hour. Mixed in with the jokes, insults, and nattering is a fair bit of discussion about bike racing and a recap of the 2013 road season. In episode 7, Mike and Derek review Stage 10 from Saint-Gildas-Des-Bois to Saint Malo, try to make sense of the Cav/Veelers sprint situation and talk about what happens in general in a full-gas sprint and how it isn't for the faint of heart. They also review the ITT of Stage 11 from Avranches to Mont Saint Michel and discuss what the results mean for the coming days of the Tour. They also explain what negative splits mean, and strategy for time trialling, hydration, and power and dish a little bit for good measure.
In episode 6, Mike and Derek review the fireworks of Stage 9 from Saint-Girons to Bagnères de Bigorre when Garmin and Movistar dropped the hammer on Sky, isolated Froome, and left the door open for a Dan Martin stage win, and Mike shares some eyewear advice that Cadel Evans gave him at the Tour of Utah.
In episode 5, Mike and Derek go back over the past two stages since episode 4 and bring us up to speed on what's what in the peloton, and then break down the the first real mountain stage with today's killer climb up Ax 3 Domaines, where Sky put on a display of dominance with a one-two punch from Froome and Porte.
In episode 4, Mike and Derek talk about the Stage 4 Team Time Trial in Nice, pontificate over the Ted King hors delai debacle, recap Stage 5 from Cagnes-sur- Mer to Marseille with the colossal sprint efforts leading to a chaotic drag race to the finish, and look ahead to the mistrals of Provence in Stage 6.
