Events, Cherry Blossom Forecasts, the Cheapo Market and VPNs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:05

With the exception of language learning, even the most raving Japanophile will agree that Japanese TV is slightly less enjoyable than being sat on by a very fat and sweaty man, so what is a cheapo to do? Fortunately one can easily get round the location specific problems of connecting to popular TV station internet broadcasts or streaming sevices from back home like Netflix, BBC iplayer etc using a VPN. A VPN, which stands for virtual private network (amongst other things) allows one to connect to a website as if one is located somewhere else, e.g. you can use a British VPN to connect to BBC iPlayer, which will think you are inside the UK and therefore allow you to access all it's warez. So listen in to hear Greg's report on which VPN services suit a cheapo's needs best. Free VPNs mentioned in the podcast ProXPN (we kept calling it XPNpro in the podcast) VPNBook SecurityKISS And for the unix geeks If you have an ssh account on a server, you can use it to create an ssh tunnel to the country it is in. So, you create the ssh tunnel with this command: ssh -D 8080 -Nf

 Cheapo Japanese Cuisine Part 2 – Podcast #17 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:24

Back again this week, Chris is joined by TJ Eckleberg and Ayumi, two very special kansai cheapos to finish the discussion of the various types of Japanese Cuisine and of course where the cheapo can find them. "Hanburg" Beef burger without a bun, family resturants are the worst (still okay though). But some really good independent places, e.g. niku rakuen (japanese link) Donburi Cheapo meal of choice "rice bowl". Typically varieties include fresh (raw) fish (try Ginchachidon or maguro ichiba), tempura, beef or 牛丼 (gyudon) (try matsuya, yoshinoya, tsukiya - these chains are absolutely everywhere) don't forget to say "つゆだく" tsuyudaku to get the extra broth (for free :) ) Generally independent or chain donburi all over the place. Sushi 5 cheapo gold stars, even 7 eleven sushi is pretty much okay (for tourists) Expensives places are amazing, but diminishing returns compared with the cheapo kaiten sushi places like ganzo sushi, or genki sushi. Check our recommendations here You can also pick up good deals after 2pm at seibu or another high end department store. Noodles Very cheapo friendly, almost always very cheap - theres a few high end soba places but they are the exception not the rule. soba (buckwheat) + udon (thick wheat noodles) ramen, the ubiquitous thin wheat noodles in broth (miso, pork) tsukemen, dipping noodles - a ramen varient Our cheapo recommendations here. Curry (Japanese style) Another good cheapo option, ichibanya CoCo Curry etc. Independent places can get a little more pricey Okonomiyaki + Tacoyaki etc Japanese fast food, usually pretty cheap, almost always available at festivals from a stall.
