8: Pursuing Your Passion – Do What You Love, Love What You Do | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:05

For the many people including leaders that are stuck in a job they don't love, the lack of passion cannot be hidden. I experienced this very thing in my own career. I grew to the place-- or I should say I descended to the place where I lacked the passion for my job.  I'll never forget one day when I was putting on a baseball cap in my garage, made by the folks at “Life is Good.”    Sewn inside the cap are these words, which come into view when you place the cap on your head: do what you like, like what you do.  I read those words and said to myself, "I am doing neither."   It was time for a change.  That baseball cap changed my life. What we cover in today's Podcast show: The Passion timeline Nothing Trumps Passion Passion Pirañas Seven Deadly Motives How do get your groove back How to know if it is time to move on Exercise to check your passion People follow people of passion. I have observed for years that if you light yourself on fire, people will come to watch you burn.   Stephen Jobs is a great example of that.  It does not matter if you are an Apple person or a PC user; you have to admire his passion.  He changed five massive industries including music, personal computers, phones, animation and mobile computing. Steve Jobs was notoriously tough to work with, but he had passion for elegant devices that have covered the globe.  In my recent trip to China I saw the biggest Apples stores ever and everyone seemed to have an iPhone and iPad. Back in the early days of Apple, Jobs inspired their advertisers to take a different path than everyone else in selling their very unique computers.  He was not just pushing computers, he had a passion to change the world.  He helped create the famous ad campaign, “Here’s to the crazy ones!” Apple ad in 1997 – Here’s to the crazy ones “ Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. - Apple Inc. Leadership can wear you out.  I hate to strip away the varnish on this and speak the truth, but it is tough being the tip of the spear.  The higher you go in leadership, the more eyes you have on you, and the more people there are to drain you.   There are so many things around you that can eat away at your passion like deadly piranhas. Proverbs 4:23 say’s it well, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”  If we lose our heart we lose our leadership credibility.  Here are some of the big passion piranhas I have experienced and/or seen in fellow leaders that robbed them of their passion: Passion Pirañas o Prolonged discouragement o Opposition to your vision o Workaholism o Lack of real vacations o Working way outside of your gifting o Unrealistic expectations of others o Unrealistic expectations of yourself o Unending marriage problems in the leader’s marriage o Constant financial pressure o A pattern of failure in leadership o Dysfunctional people o Unhealthy leadership team o Lack of a leadership team to share the load o Constant unresolved staff conflict o Lack of respect for your leaders above you o Hidden moral failure o Neglect of your relationship with God Seven Deadly Motives for Staying in a Job Past Your Passion Seven deadly motives for hanging on to position when your passion is gone: * Power * Prestige * Position * Popularity * Pride * Personal Gain * Paycheck.. You really have two options:  Get your groove back or move on…. How to Get Your Groove Back

7: Is Affirmation in your Leadership Arsenal? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:17

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Leo Buscaglia, PhD Compliments dissolve very quickly like ice on a hot sidewalk! “One of the commodities in life that most people can’t get enough of is compliments. The ego is never so intact that one can’t find a hole in which to plug a little praise. But, compliments by their very nature are highly biodegradable and tend to dissolve hours or days after we receive them–which is why we can always use another.”  —Phyllis Theroux Leaders need to learn how to affirm the various people that they work with.  And not everyone is the same.  Just like people have different love languages, they have different affirmation languages. Learn to read the varying levels of affirmation people need. Action item: Four takeaways at the end of the show 1. We leaders MUST affirm our people!  When it is deserved! 2. Everyone thrives on affirmation and praise. Everyone! 3. Recognition and praise has a short shelf life. 4.  Learn to read the varying levels of affirmation your people need. A helpful exercise you should try at work! 1. Make a list of three to five people that need a pat on the back from you. 2. Write them an affirmation 3. Let me know how it goes!

6: How to Handle Criticism and Opposition When it Comes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:23

Being opposed for your leadership WILL happen.  It is just a matter of time.  Abraham Lincoln was a master at dealing with opposition.  Here is how he handled it. "If I were to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business.  I do the very best I know how – the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until then. If the end brings me out alright, what is said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, 10,000 Angels swearing I was right would make no difference."   That is probably not ALWAYS the right approach, but you in some positions that is all you can do!   Here is what I cover in this podcast:  I hope you will listen!   * Why we get criticized   * The source of a lot of criticism   * The manner in which we are criticized   * The best way to respond to criticism    * I am going to give you a great list at the end of 10 ways to diffuse a personal attackI have been pounded by criticism from time to time in my career.  Have you?You never know when or how it will come… like those depth charges trying to take out the uBoats:It could come from… a phone call a personal visit an email a blog post a text message you name it... One thing that at times freaks our followers is a big change program:Top Ten Fears of Change  1. Fear of the unknown  2. Fear of loss or failure  3. Insecurity—I may be worse off  4. Power—I may lose some  5. Uncertainty and confusion—misunderstanding the intent of the change  6. Inertia—the status quo is strong  7. Energy and pressure—it takes more work and stresses us out  8. Money—it costs more to change things  9. Lack of trust—our leaders messed up before   10. Doubt—not sure this is the right direction to solve our problemsRobert Jarvik, inventor of the artificial heart, observed, “Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them.” Once you assume a leadership position, you are often thrust upon the followers, and they have to get to know you. Some will like you, and some won’t. You have to start by earning their trust. Some will have an easy time following your lead, but there will always be the few who just don’t care for you. Sometimes it’s just a matter of poor chemistry. The fine art of resisting leaders: There are many creative ways for people to oppose and resist your leadership. It’s not usually as open and confrontational as the story I just shared. Here’s the kind of behavior that routinely undermines leadership:   * Passive-aggressive behavior    * Rebellion—subtle or outright    * Disrespect   * Blocking mechanisms   * Side chatter and gossip   * The meeting after the meeting   * Spreading rumors   * Grumbling (see definition in the following pages)    * Subtle undermining   * Character assassinations   * Paying no attention to leadersHow do we respond?  For most of us, negatively   * quit   * run   * hide   * get depressed   * lash out in anger   * rationalization    * revenge   * fight back   * belittle   * shoot the messengerWhat is the right thing to do?   How will you best handle criticism WHEN it comes… and come it will!   * Look for what you need to learn about your leadership.     Look for the 5% of truth. Ten ways to defuse a personal attack - Dr. Ken Williams  1. Keep Silent for Starters (John 19:9; Prov. 17:27–28; Isa. 53:7)   2. Think Before You React (Prov. 15:28; 29:20; James1:19–20)  3. Really Listen (Prov. 18:2–23; 19:20; James 1:19)   4. Respond Gently (Prov. 15:1; 16:21; 25:15)   5. Agree (Matt. 5:25; John 18:37) –with whatever is true –in principle –with the possibility of truth  6. Give Caring Feedback (John 19:11; Prov. 15:1)  7. Ask Me for More Clarification (John 18:34; Matt. 5:39–41)   8. Avoid Quarreling (Eph. 4:31; Prov. 17:14)  9. Offer to Help (Matt. 5:40–41; Luke 6:27–28)  10. Ask for Forgiveness, If Appropriate (1 Sam. 15:24–30; 25:28)5Leadership quote and book recommendation of the show:Robert Jarvik,

5: Relunctant Leaders Make the Best Leaders | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:00

Do you find yourself in a position of leadership that stretches you?  Ever wish you could go run and hide every once in a while? I hope you listen to the podcast show episode #5 about Reluctant Leadership. In 1994 I had a chance to meet Mother Theresa in Calcutta, India.  She was an amazing women of compassion who won the Nobel Prize for her ministry among the poor.  As I was in her presence I realized what a humble spirit she had--a truly remarkable servant leader who so reluctant to gain attention.  She was a great leader for all the right reasons. Here is what cover in today's podcast: * What is reluctant leadership? * What's so great about reluctance? * Five excuses many people make to avoid being a leader in a situation * The Seven deadly motives for wanting leadership or staying in leadership past your prime * The kind of leaders that the world is begging for… are you one of these? We need more great leaders with the right motives. 1. The world is hunger for great leadership 2. The world needs great leadership 3. We desperately need more great leaders for all walks of life. 4. We desperately need more of the RIGHT KIND of leaders. (That is what the show is about today) 5. It is OK to want to be a leader for God: This is a trustworthy saying: "If someone aspires to be an elder, he desires an honorable position." I Tim 1:3 NLT 6. We need leaders with the RIGHT motives! When I talk about leaders in God's plan for this, planet, I am talking leaders in all walks of life.  In the marketplace, professional world in churches, nonprofits, education, government or ministry. Some of the Christian Leaders I admire most are in the marketplace, not in the pulpit or on the mission field. SO WHERE DO WE LEARN ABOUT GREAT LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES?I believe that we can find resources for great leadership in all kinds of places: * Books * Podcasts * GREAT leaders * Seminars * From people who don't know God (natural revelation) * From people who do (spiritual revelation) * From the Bible: (special revelation) For today's topic I will use the Bible Of the greatest leaders in the Bible was Moses.  He knew God face to face. In the Old Testament Exodus Three we find the record of his leadership calling:  This is the story of Moses at the burning bush - This is one of the greatest leadership conversations between God and man in all of the Bible. The need was a suffering people in Egypt that needed to be delivered. Leadership always fills a massive need. Moses made five excuses why God had the wrong man: V 11: Excuse 1: The excuse of Identity - I am a nobody.  You talkin to me? V 13: Excuse 2: The excuse of Authority - No one sent me.  No clout. V 4:1 Excuse 3: The excuse of Credibility - I am not special.   Family and friends doubt. V 4:10 Excuse 4: The excuse of Gifting - I don't have what it takes.  I am lacking XYZ V 4:13 Excuse 5: The excuse of Cowardice - I just don't want to God! The 5th excuse:  He finishes with what I have come to call the "prayer of the reluctant leader."  All excuses really are equal. Exodus 4:13  But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.” Illustration: How many times I have prayed that prayer: * Before a meeting * Before a confrontation * Before firing someone * Before an uncomfortable board meeting (40 in my career) * Before a big speaking assignment * Before a huge deadline * After a big failure when I wanted to crawl under a rock and stay there So why did God insist on using Moses?  Why did God not move on to the 2 million others he had to chose from?  What was it about this man that so captured the heart of God????? The Key is Humility - Numbers 12:3 - That's why God wanted to use him! The fact that Moses did not feel that he had anything to offer made him perfect for the job Seven deadly motives I have seen in leadership that are career killers: Page 75 in my book, The Top Ten Leadership Commandments. * Power
