 Food Babe: She’s Taking on Kraft and Other Big Food Corporations | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 61:37

Ever think that you can't make a difference? Vani Hari aka Food Babe may change your mind. Food Babe started blogging about food a little over two years ago and her passion, tenacity and knowledge has effected many--including big restaurant chains and their food ingredients.  Many think that they cannot take on the "big" food companies, but not Food Babe, she just goes for it. Recently, Food Babe took on Kraft Foods and their Macaroni and Cheese (something that many of us grew up with.) She discovered that Kraft had two different versions of their mac and cheese--one for Americans and one for the UK. She discovered that yellow dye #5 and yellow dye #6 are ingredients in the American version and that Kraft does not use these ingredients in their UK version. These dyes have been proven to be linked to hyperactivity in children. She started a petition to ask Kraft to remove the dyes and has collected over 300,000 signatures. Her petition gained her National attention and she has been interviewed by just about every major news source in the U.S.  The New York Times recently posted an article about Kraft and their warning labels on this product in the UK (New York Times article). Food Babe has also taken on companies like Chipotle, Fro Yo (yogurt), Subway and more! Her investigative work has prompted some of these companies to make changes in their ingredients. Nora Gedgaudas, CNS, CNT, is a certified nutritional therapist and neurofeedback specialist and is the author of the National best-selling book, "Primal Body, Primal Mind, Beyond the Paleo Diet for Total Health and a Longer Life". She has studied nutritional science for over 30 years. Gedgaudas examines the healthy lives of our pre-agricultural Paleolithic ancestors and the marked decline in stature, bone density, dental health and disease following the implementation of the agricultural lifestyle. She shares with us how our modern grain, heavy carbohydrate and low-fat diets are a far cry from our ancestors' high-fat, moderate protein, hunter-gatherer diet. When asked about the current USDA's food pyramid, which has grains at its base with a recommendation of 6-11 servings per day, she states: "There is no human people group in the history of the entire human species that has ever eaten a diet even remotely resembling what that USDA food service suggests is optimal--yet that is the gold standard in terms of government guidelines. What was used to make a determination of the optimal diet in that pyramid had nothing to do with what is healthy for humans based on research...it is based on politics and economics and nothing more." She explains the nutritional problems of grains, soy, dairy and starchy vegetables and which fats are beneficial for optimal health. She states that gluten is the cause of a great many of the health challenges that millions of people face today, both physical and mental. She is a member of the Weston A. Dr. Vandana Shiva, scientist, philosopher, author, environmentalist, activist and feminist who supports the movement for peace, sustainability and social justice spoke with Food Integrity Now this week. Dr. Shiva, who is trained as a physicist and also studied quantum theory, was inspired by Gandhi and lives by his message "be the change you want to see." She discussed the March Against Monsanto, which was held on May 25, 2013, and the importance of raising awareness and consciousness as to the greed and manipulation by corporations who are trying to monopolize and destroy our food supply. She spoke with us about how Monsanto has monopolized our seeds by their patent law (which in essence is the patenting of life),  the control of agribusiness on agriculture and how that has effected the farmers (to the point that nearly 250,000 have committed suicide) and how the commodities markets speculate on our food--putting food out of the reach of many people by driving up the price. She is passionate about saving seeds and growing gardens as a way to achieve freedom from the grips of corporate dictatorship. Dr. Shiva is the founder of Navdanya, which is an organization devoted to the saving of seeds. She discusses the needs for patent reform and the importance of repelling cases like the Bowman vs. Monsanto case to bring awareness to the public about Monsanto's attempt to patent life. She is inspired by the individual power of the people and leaves us with some ways to effect change and stop the dictatorship of Monsanto.  Does Milk Do The Body Good? Mark McAfee Tells the Raw Story! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:50

National milk advertising campaigns like “Milk Does The Body Good” and “Got Milk?” and governmental agencies have lauded the benefits of conventional pasteurized industrial milk, but many are rejecting this advice as their bodies are rejecting the milk. Why do so many people have milk allergies? Why are many people turning to alternative milks like almond, soy, coconut or hemp? Could it be that our body doesn't lie and that the reason our body is rejecting this "supposedly" healthy substance is that pasteurized milk is not as healthy as advertised. Mark McAfee, CEO and Founder of Organic Pastures, which is the largest raw milk dairy in the United States, spoke with us about the health benefits of raw milk. He explains the history of dairy farming and the reasons why milk went from being a healthy living substance to a dead pasteurized product that is the most allergenic food in America. McAfee explains how in Europe raw milk and whole foods are used to promote good health and prevent disease. Whereas, in the United States, the prescription for good health entails going to the doctor and taking a pill for whatever ails us. He further shares the nutritional value of drinking clean, raw milk and the many health benefits, including having healthy gut bacteria and immunity to many diseases. If the FDA, CDC and the milk processors had their way, no one would be drinking raw milk. Why is that? It certainly isn't because it is dangerous or hazardous to your health. In fact, no one has died from drinking raw milk since 1973. McAfee states that contrary to what these organizations claim, raw milk is one of the healthiest substances you can put in your body! So why won't the FDA allow raw milk producers to cross state lines with their product--even if the state they are crossing into allows the sale of raw milk? The answer is simple, corruption and greed! McAfee also discusses almonds, which he grows on his farm. Do you know if the almonds you buy are truly "raw" almonds? They may not be. Pasteurization and irradiation is a wide-spread practice for almond growers. Since truth in labeling and transparency doesn't seen to be a major priority with many of our big food growers, Mark suggests that you call your farmer and be your own food safety consultant. Forest Shomer was saving seeds before many of us were even born! Shomer was a student in Berkley in the late 60's and became involved in the ecology movement. From there, his passion lead him to become a student of the land and ultimately learn about seeds and seed saving. Over the next 40 years, Shomer spent his time studying, learning and hand-collecting native seeds. He founded Abundant Life Seed Foundation, which was the first full-service bioregional seed source in America and is the current sole owner of Inside Passage Seeds. He has conducted over 200 seed workshops since 1974 and was the Keynote speaker at the Northwest Permaculture Convergence in October 2012. In this interview, Shomer talked with us about seeds and the differences between Organic, Hybrid, Heirloom/Heritage seeds. He also discussed the importance of seed saving and offered us information on how to save seeds. Shomer lives part of the year on the Island of Kauai. When asked about the community activism in Hawaii, Forest shares how active and concerned people are about the chemical degradation of the soil, including the use of the chemical Atrazine (which is banned in Europe), the pollution of the island's water supply, the contamination of the food supplies by GMO pollens and the erosion of the island due to the damage caused to their coral reefs. Shomer's passion for the planet and loving demeanor is refreshing during these tumultuous times. His integrous and solution-based approach to creating a healthier planet is not only educational but inspirational. What exactly is a Frankenvine? Did you know that there are over 150 legal chemicals that are added to wine to do everything from creating taste, texture and sight to preserving and speeding up the fermentation process? Did you know that these chemicals do not have to be labeled? Food Integrity Now spoke with Gary Conway, artist, former actor and a three-decade viticulturist, farmer and owner of Carmody McKight Winery.  So what exactly is Conway talking about when he talks about Frankenvines? Conway explained how when the grapevines are grafted and hybridized, the nutrients from the soil are blocked and thus create a nutrient-deplete beverage that no longer remotely resembles the wines of our ancestors. He compares this process to that of our GMO foods--which are also nutrient deplete! He speaks about the history of wine making, which is as old as 10,000 years and how it has been forgotten. Conway claims that the wines of today have been so industrialized and the soils have been chemically fertilized, that wine really isn't wine--it is more of a wine-like beverage. He explains how the quality of the mass-produced wine has little to none of the health benefits that most of us associate with wine. Conway's winery has invited studies as to the nutrient density of his soil from prestigious universities such as UC Davis and Cal Poly. His claims about the quality of his wines and the quality of his soil are documented at his winery and on his website. He calls it the "blood test" which he feels is so important when talking about quality wine. He challenges any winemaker to disprove his claim that his winery is the "only winery in the world" making truly natural wines. Did you know that the Department of Defense has given the U.S. Navy permission to cover 70% of our oceans with their sonar system? What does this mean for the whales, dolphins and other cetaceans? Lyndia and Lance Leonard have taken this issue on to assist our friends of the sea. Through the military's use of sonar, noise pollution and the pollution of our oceans, whales, dolphins and other sea creatures are being harmed to point of losing their ability to hear--which in essence means death for these magnificent creatures. The Leonard's have created three on-line petitions to stop the injuring and killing of these creatures and their humanitarian mission and message is one of urgency. The U.S. Navy is seeking permission to kill, permanently injure, or otherwise seriously harm whales and dolphins more than 31 million times over the next five years throughout Southern California, Hawaii, the Gulf of Mexico, and along the Atlantic Coast, using sonar and other equipment. By law the Fisheries Service has to let the public comment on its preliminary decision. If approved, genetically engineered salmon ("Frankenfish") would be the first genetically engineered animal that our Federal Government has ever approved for food consumption. This decision could be a defining moment for humanity, wildlife and our planet. Colin O'Neil, Director of Government Affairs for the Center for Food Safety talks with Food Integrity Now about the inherent dangers of allowing the approval by the FDA of AquaBounty's GE salmon. O'Neil discusses the risks of GE Salmon being released into the enviroment, as well as the health dangers associated with this untested salmon. His message is one of urgency! O'Neil advocates to everyone to let their voice be heard by the FDA. The comment period to the FDA has been extended until April 26, 2013 and provides a golden opportunity to create a consumer uproar and put a  halt to GE Salmon. The next time you go to purchase some tilapia or shrimp or eat seafood at a restaurant, you might want to consider where it came from. Nearly all the seafood in the United States is imported from countries like Vietnam and China. So what's the problem? It's imported into this country so it must be safe, right? Surely the FDA inspects it before it is sold to consumers? The truth is that less than 2% of all seafood entering this country is inspected by the FDA and sadly only about .01 percent of seafood products are tested for drug traces.
