Commander Kirk Lippold US Navy Ret. was the commanding officer of the USS Cole on October 12, 2000. At 11:18 in the morning, while docked in the port of Aden in Yemen for a routine fueling stop, the 8400-ton destroyer was rocked by an enormous explosion. At that time it was the most violent terrorist attack in US history and the first of what would be a series of attacks by Al Qaeda directly on the US.
