 STP 002 – Three-Act Structure | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:39

The second episode of the Story Telling Podcast is out! CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE Garrett began the episode by correcting an omission, which was crediting the guys over at the Self-Publishing Podcast for the awesome work they've been doing for nearly a year now. Their podcast was the basis of and inspiration behind the Story Telling Podcast, and our format is virtually a carbon copy of theirs. Without their advice, Garrett would never have started writing OR podcasting in the first place (so either you have them to thank, or you have them to blame). Plus, in their last episode they gave him (good-natured) crap for ripping them off without even a credit. THREE-ACT STRUCTURE We discussed Three-Act Structure, a generally applicable but often maligned storytelling device. Many people (including Cristal) tend to denigrate Three-Act Structure, saying it's not widely applicable and only in stories if you really look for it, and "bend the rules," so to speak, of what an Act actually is. Garrett argued against it, saying Three-Act structure is a vital storytelling component in most great stories. An inordinate amount of time was spent talking about Pulp Fiction.  STP 001 – Beginning Your Story | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:01

The first episode of the Story Telling Podcast is out. This being the first episode, we spent a good amount of time introducing ourselves. Aside from me (your lovely host) there's Zach Bolger and Crystal Logothetis, both of whom are independent authors of tremendous skill and relatively little renown (which is the only reason they've agreed to work with me). I figured it was good to get on their bandwagons before they blew up in their respective writing genres. STORY BEGINNINGS We decided to tackle story beginnings -- whether for books or films -- and the best way to use them, along with different examples of our favorite and least favorite beginnings. It turns out, for example, that Zach and Crystal both hate Ender's Game. SHOUT OUTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS I referred to the book Save the Cat during the episode; if you want to purchase it, you can get it from Amazon via this affiliate link (I get fifty cents if you do! Woot!): Click here to buy Save the Cat. I also made reference to friend of the show and fellow indie author Crissy Moss' book, Flight of the Griffins, which you can check out here: Click here to buy Flight of the Griffins.
