Compassion | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: Unknown

Today our Bible verses tell us about a time when Jesus miraculously fed 4000 people. Jesus did that because He had compassion for them. But Jesus did not only feel sorry for the people. His compassion led Him to find a way to feed the large group of people. First, Jesus had his disciples help Him. They gathered the food they had and then gave the food to the people. Jesus’ action was giving thanks for the food and then multiplying it. We can see Christians around us today showing compassion to people in need. A young mother is a friend to an elderly widow who lives next door. A teen works at a shelter and helps feed homeless people. A preacher counsels others who are facing crises in their lives. Just as Jesus showed compassion to the hungry people, we can see God working through Christians today. Ask God to show you ways to share His compassion with people today.

When I was in college, I took a math class. Sometimes when I tried to solve a math problem, I felt like my head would explode. I thought that those math problems were the worst things I would ever experience. But during the past few years, I have experienced many bad things. Since my husband died, I have had the responsibility of taking care of my sons and dealing with my own health problems. I have to make important decisions all the time. In our Bible Reading today, we learn how we should handle important decisions. The first thing we should do is ask God for His help and wisdom — “Give me the knowledge to make wise decisions” (verse 66a). Then we need to make sure we are obeying God’s Word — “But now I carefully obey everything you say” (verse 67b). Finally, we need to ask God to guide us — “Teach me your laws” (verse 68b). Do you have important decisions to make today? Talk to God about these decisions and ask Him to give you wisdom and strength.

Elisha threw a stick into the water and a lost ax head floated to the top of the water (2 Kings 6:1-7). The Israelites marched around the city of Jericho, blowing trumpets and shouting, and the walls of the city fell down (Joshua 6:20). What do these two events have in common? They are both miracles. In each case, God took a bad situation and used His power to make it better. Normally, iron ax heads don’t float on the water and people marching around a city do not cause walls to fall down. But when we depend on God to help us, wonderful things can happen. Verse 13 of our Bible Reading reminds us that God works in our lives. “He helps you want to do what pleases him, and he gives you the power to do it” (verse 13b). God and Christians are a team, working together to make great things happen in His kingdom! Allow God to work in your life today to bring honor and glory to Him.

Be Satisfied | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: Unknown

In our world today, many people live from paycheck to paycheck. Other people struggle to find a job and pay their debts. Probably we all dream of spending our money on things like a nice car, electronic devices or a vacation trip. When we have these desires but don’t have the money to buy what we want, we feel poor. This feeling of poverty may lead us to become dissatisfied with what we have. In our Bible verses, Paul encourages us to be satisfied with what we have. “I have learned to be satisfied with what I have and with whatever happens” (verse 11b). What we will have in heaven with God will be much better than anything we can have on earth. So we need to be satisfied with what we have now and look forward to when God will bless us in heaven. Be like Paul today. Be satisfied and depend on Jesus to help you do whatever you need to do.

Verse 62a of our Bible Reading reminds me of an experience I had a long time ago. This verse says, “In the middle of the night, I get up to thank you.” When my son was a baby, I thought he had a cold. During the night he became very sick. I called our doctor, and he told me to take my son to the hospital right away. I drove my son to the hospital and watched as doctors and nurses took care of him. I felt helpless. All I could do was stand out of the way and pray. Finally I was allowed to take my son home. The doctor had given me special instructions on how to take care of my son. I slept beside my son for several nights. I was very tired and kept trying not to cry. Slowly my son improved. One night I woke up and noticed that my son looked a lot better. I got up and prayed and thanked God for helping my son through this sickness. When you face bad times in your life, ask God to help and comfort you. And don’t forget to thank Him for answering your prayer.

Conflicts | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: Unknown

We all face conflicts in life. Even Christians do not always agree with each other. In our Bible Reading, Jesus gives us a plan for resolving conflicts with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Verse 15 says, “If your brother or sister in God’s family does something wrong, go and tell them what they did wrong.” This shows us that we need to do something to resolve our conflicts. If going to a brother or sister alone doesn’t solve the problem, then we are to take other Christians with us. And if that doesn’t help, then we are to “treat them as you would treat someone who does not know God or who is a tax collector” (verse 17b). We should not hate that person. Instead we should show them God’s love and grace. We should work hard to resolve our conflicts with other Christians. God will be pleased when we settle our problems using Jesus’ plan.

Jesus told His eleven special followers to go to a mountain in Galilee. On that mountain, they worshiped Jesus. Our Bible verses tell us that while Jesus was talking to His followers, He gave them a special command. Jesus said, “So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do” (verses 19-20a). This command is for Christians today, too. But sometimes it is hard to tell other people about Jesus. When we are scared or discouraged about sharing the Gospel with others, the Holy Spirit helps us. He is our comforter, counselor and helper in our Christian life. Look for opportunities today to share the Good News about Jesus with someone. Ask the Holy Spirit to help and guide you.

After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to two men as they were walking on a road. Later these two men told more of Jesus’ followers that He was alive. These followers were together and “Jesus himself came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’” (verse 36b). Jesus’ followers were afraid and thought He was a ghost. Jesus told the followers to not be afraid and to touch Him. “You can see that I have a living body; a ghost does not have a body like this” (verse 39b). Then Jesus’ followers believed that He had risen from the dead. In John 20:29, Jesus told His followers, “You believe because you see me. Great blessings belong to the people who believe without seeing me!” Jesus was talking about you and me. We cannot see Him today, but we can read about Him in the Bible. And we can know for sure that Jesus rose from the dead. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we have the hope of living forever with Him!

Roman soldiers took Jesus to a place called Golgotha. There they nailed Jesus to a cross. When Jesus was on the cross, many people walked by and shouted insults at Him. Priests, teachers of the law and Jewish leaders made fun of Jesus. Some of these people said (verse 40b), “So save yourself! Come down from that cross if you really are the Son of God!” And the criminals on the other crosses insulted Jesus, too. Even though people insulted Jesus, He did not become angry. Jesus didn’t talk back to the people. He didn’t seek revenge. Why? Because Jesus knew He had to die so our sins could be forgiven. Jesus knew God’s great plan for saving us! When you follow Jesus, other people may insult you. What will you do? Will you become angry, talk back or seek revenge? Be like Jesus. Trust God. Be thankful that He has forgiven your sins and has a plan for you. Pray for other people, too, that they will believe in Jesus and follow Him.

Our Bible verses today tell us that a big group of people went to arrest Jesus. Among those people was one of His disciples, Judas. When the men grabbed Jesus to arrest Him, another follower took his sword and cut off one of the servant’s ears. What did Jesus do? Did He fight back? Did He try to run away? Did Jesus prevent the men from arresting Him? Did He call angels to come and rescue Him? No! Jesus allowed the men to arrest Him. Why did Jesus do that? He knew it was God’s plan for Him to be arrested. Jesus obeyed His Father’s will and fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies. Be like Jesus. Read the Bible so that you will know what God’s plan is for you. And be sure to obey His will every day of your life.

Sometimes we know that we need to do something for God, but we are not sure we want to do it. Maybe you have felt that way before. Jesus knew God wanted Him to die on the cross. But His human nature wanted to avoid the pain, suffering and humiliation. So in our Bible verses Jesus asked God, “My Father, if it is possible, don’t make me drink from this cup” (verse 39b). Jesus was asking God if there was another way He could obey Him. But then Jesus added, “But do what you want, not what I want” (verse 39b). When we want to avoid doing something for God, we may ask Him if there is another way to serve Him. Maybe God will show us another way or maybe He will be silent. God’s silence means that there is no other way. God expects us to obey Him and accept His will. Jesus is our perfect example of how we should follow God. Humbly serve and obey God today!

Our Bible verses today tell us that Jesus went to his hometown of Nazareth. He went to the synagogue and read from the book of Isaiah. Jesus read verses of prophecy about the Messiah. When Jesus was finished reading, He said, “While you heard me reading these words just now, they are coming true” (verse 21b). Then Jesus talked about how the Jewish prophets had helped people who were non-Jews. This made the people in the synagogue angry. These people “forced Jesus to go out of town...They took Jesus to the edge of a hill to throw him off. But he walked through the middle of the crowd and went away” (verses 29-30). Jesus was rejected by His friends and family. That must have hurt Him! Sometimes our friends and family reject us when we speak the truth from God’s Word. It is sad when people reject God, but it is very important that we always speak the truth. Remember that God will be with you as you speak His truth.

If you walk around a shopping mall, you may see ads for different products sold in the mall. We may ignore some ads, but others might catch our eye. These ads may tempt us to buy things we can’t afford or we don’t need. In our Bible verses today, the devil tempted Jesus. The devil wanted Jesus to fail and disobey God. But Jesus was able to resist all the temptations presented by the devil. Each time Jesus was tempted, He said, “No!” How was Jesus able to do this? He relied on God’s Word to help Him. Each time Jesus was tempted, He quoted verses from the Bible. Jesus set a good example for us. We, too, can resist temptations by using God’s Word. Maybe the devil will tempt you to sin today. When that happens, pray to God and read God’s words in the Bible. Then thank God for His help and His strength!

I have a delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe that was passed down to me from my great-grandma. I have made these cookies so many times that now I have the recipe memorized. But I have learned that I should never miss one single ingredient of the recipe. If I do, the cookies will turn out differently than my great-grandma’s cookies. If I follow the recipe exactly, I know that the cookies will be delicious! Our Bible Reading today tells us about Jesus’ baptism. In verse 15 Jesus said, “We should do whatever God says is right.” Jesus wanted to obey God and do what is right. Why? Because He wanted to please God. This is a good example for us. We should always try to do what is right. I am careful to follow my grandma’s cookie recipe. In the same way, we should be careful to study the Bible and follow God’s plan for our lives.

The prophet Micah wrote, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, are the smallest town in Judah...but the ‘Ruler of Israel’ will come from you to rule for me” (Micah 5:2). This verse tells us that God’s Son would be born in Bethlehem. And our Bible Reading from Luke today says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. We know where Jesus was born, but we do not know the exact date. Bible scholars have debated for many years about when Jesus was born. Many people have chosen to celebrate Jesus’ birth on December 25th. But we can celebrate Jesus’ birth every day of the year! We should remember that without Jesus, we are lost and have no hope. Jesus came to earth to be the Savior of the world! Take some time today to celebrate Jesus! Thank God for sending Jesus to accept the punishment for your sins. Share your thanks and joy with other people.
