Sound Devices MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 review for podcasters | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: Unknown

The Sound Devices MixPre-3 MixPre-6 could be the ultimate device for podcasting to replace your mixer, recorder, and audio interface. Here’s my review. In 2017, Sound Devices launched two amazing products: the MixPre-3 and its bigger brother the MixPre-6. I think they are almost perfect, but I do have a few disappointments, which I’ll share below! Before I get too deep into my review, thanks to Sound Devices for loaning me this MixPre-6! I didn’t pay for this, but I also don’t get to keep it. However, I like the MixPre-6 so much that if my disappointments were resolved—which is a real possibility—I would immediately buy my own MixPre-6. The MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 are very similar with their core features. They both contain high-quality preamps, both record to multiple isolated tracks, both interface with computers and mobile devices as a multitrack input and output, and both the MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 have great mixing capabilities. For the rest of my review, I’ll focus on the MixPre-6, but most of the information applies to the MixPre-3 as well, with the main difference being fewer inputs and outputs on the MixPre-3. The MixPre-6 offers 4 combo locking XLR/TRS inputs, two on each side. The Kashmir preamps offer up to 96 dB of clean gain. That’s enough to support a directly connected dynamic studio microphones and record with little to no hiss. On the right side, there’s also a 3.5 mm stereo (TRS) auxiliary input that makes it easy to bring in sound effects or a podcast guest or cohost from a consumer-level device, such as a PC, smartphone, or tablet. For outputs, the MixPre-6 offers a stereo headphone out with its own volume control, and on the left side, a 3.5 mm stereo (TRS) line out with a really cool feature I’ll tell you about in a bit. MixPre-3/6 is more versatile than  Zoom H6 and others Thus far, the MixPre-6 may not seem all that different from devices like the Zoom H6. But here are the amazing features that raise the MixPre-6 above other recorders, and mean it could replace several pieces of audio gear in your podcast studio. Noticeably first is the higher build quality of the MixPre-6. It has a durable metal shell and corner grips that would protect the MixPre-6 from an impact. The MixPre-6 can connect with computers and mobile devices as a multitrack audio interface via USB. While other devices may offer similar functionality, the MixPre-6 can interface while also functioning as a standalone recorder. Compare that to the Zoom H6, which can be only a recorder or an interface, but not be both simultaneously. Multitrack USB interface The USB interface itself is also quite amazing. When connected to your PC, the MixPre-6 can offer up to 4 audio outputs from your PC to the MixPre-6 and up to 8 audio inputs from the MixPre-6 to your PC. In full 8-track mode, input tracks 1 and 2 contain a stereo mix of everything going into the MixPre-6, and then tracks 3–8 are isolated tracks from the MixPre-6’s own input channels 1–6.

Sennheiser MKE 440 Stereo Shotgun Mic for Cameras | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 3:41

Get better ambiance in your videos with the . The MKE 440 is a V-shaped mic with two matched mini-shotgun microphones, clear focus, side-noise rejection, and audio that matches the image. The MKE 440 includes internal shock mounts and a stainless steel grill that protects against wind and offers adjustable sensitivity. The stereo-separation of the sound can be used for clear-focused video and practical interviews on-the-fly for podcasters, but it adds a more experiential sound that Sennheiser is known for. .

Sennheiser MK 4 Digital Studio Condenser Mic for iOS | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 3:20

If you like the sound of a studio condenser microphone, the Sennheiser MK 4 Digital is a portable and professional microphone for connecting to iOS devices. The MK 4 Digital is a studio condenser microphone that records into any audio app (such as Apogee MetaRecorder), video app, or live-streaming app on a Lightning-connected iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad). I usually don't recommend condenser microphones for podcasters because of typically noisy podcast “studios”—heating/ventilation/air conditioning, computer fans, appliances, etc. However, because the MK 4 Digital connects to any iOS device, you can make a noise-free “studio” out of any space you can take your mic and iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Expect the Sennheiser MK 4 Digital Studio Condenser Mic for iOS in summer 2016, priced around $400. Read Sennheiser's announcement for more information.

How the Electro-Voice RE320 Dynamic Microphone Was Created | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 16:19

The is my favorite podcasting microphone. It produces a more natural sound than other studio dynamic microphones in the same price range. Watch my previous review of the RE320 and my review of the RE20. At NAB Show 2016, I talked to Rick Belt, one of the men behind the RE320. Rick told the story behind the RE320, including its predecessors, the Electro-Voice RE20 and RE27N/D. Rick Belt, known as TheEVMicGuy on YouTube, was part of a strategic team to make a versatile dynamic cardioid microphone that works great for voice, as well as recording music, with a lower price point than the more expensive RE20 and RE27N/D. Electro-Voice began developing the technology for the RE20 and the RE27N/D in the 1950s, which became known as Variable D. This technology means you don't have to maintain an exact distance from the microphone to get a consistent tone. (Most dynamic microphones get more bassy the closer you get.) Variable D was patented in 1964 and Electro-Voice used this technology in 1968 in the RE20. In the 1980s, Electro-Voice began using neodymium magnets, which are more sensitive than the ceramic magnets in the RE20. Around 1984, they introduced the RE27N/D with this technology. The RE27N/D sounds more like a condenser microphone, which most people find makes their voice sound richer and more “radio-like,” even though it is a dynamic mic, which means it won’t pick up as much background noise. Electro-Voice wanted to approach the music market with a less expensive version of the RE20, using its body and the engine out of the RE27N/D. Electro-Voice came up with a low-mass, high-velocity plastic that responds quickly to voice. And thus, inspired from Rick's tests in his basement, the RE320 Variable-D dynamic vocal and instrument microphone was born. The is my top recommend podcasting microphone and it retails for $299. For comparison, the retails for $449 and the  retails for $499.

Sennheiser HandMic Digital Dynamic Microphone Connects to iOS via Lightning Port | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 4:18

Record quality audio outside your studio with Sennheiser's new HandMic Digital. This microphone plugs directly into your iOS device's Lightning port. This microphone can be used for podcasting, video recording, or live-streaming wherever you can take your iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). The HandMic Digital is among the latest Sennheiser products in collaboration with Apogee. Connecting the HandMic Digital via Lightning port produces better audio quality than a device's 3.5 mm TRRS connector. The Lightning connection allows the gain and processing to be handled by the external device instead of limited to iOS's internal hardware audio processor. The design is based on the . HandMic Digital features built-in wind reduction for outdoor use, as well as internal shock mounting for handheld use. The HandMic Digital can also connect to any PC via the included USB cable. If you prefer studio use, the HandMic Digital also includes a standard microphone clamp and desktop stand. The HandMic Digital works best with Apogee MetaRecorder, but it is compatible with any other audio or video app that accepts a Lightning-connected audio devices (such as FiLMiC Pro, Periscope, and much more). The Sennheiser HandMic Digital is will be available in summer, 2016, and will retail for under $300.

 Pilotfly H2: 5-Mode, 3-Axis, 1-Handed Gimbal (NAB Show 2016) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 5:28

The smartphone gimbal will support horizontal and vertical phone orientations (handy for those vertical-only apps). The Pilotfly H2 is extremely versatile for the $998 retail price. The smartphone gimbal will be available for $320. Visit Pilotfly's website for more information, and preorder from B&H or Adorama.

Adobe Character Animator Makes Animations Easy and Fun | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 8:57

Character animation can be an engaging way to make video promos, explainers, or podcast teasers. Adobe Character Animator will make that easy! At NAB Show 2016, Adobe previewed great features coming soon to the prerelease Adobe Character Animator, packaged with After Effects. Character Animator imports layers from a Photoshop or Illustrator file to become designated parts of a character. You can either name the parts of your character for Character Animator to automatically recognize, or you can tag the parts as necessary. The easiest way to get started with Adobe Character Animator would be to look at the samples in the welcome screen, as well as the video tutorials. Each character would need different mouth and eye images, then Character Animator can automate the animations beyond that. Where Character Animator gets really easy is that it can listen to a real-time or recorded voice and animator the mouth automatically. Plus, a webcam (or recorded video) can be used to animate eye, eyebrow, head, and more movements. Once recorded, you have full control over the animations to tweak as you wish. When you want to animate limbs, it's easy to make a bone structure that lets you move those parts with a mouse or other control. Specific positions or animations can even be assigned to keyboard shortcuts to make it easy for you to animate live. Instead of getting everything right the first time, Adobe Character Animator lets you target specific pieces for recording. Thus, you can layer your animations over each other. Such as recording facial animations, then lip-syncing, then body, and so on. Adobe Character Animator installs automatically with Adobe After Effects and can be accessed through the After Effects “File” menu. Or, you can launch it directly from your applications. Adobe Character Animator is currently in public preview mode (in other words, beta) and will eventually be part of Adobe Creative Cloud.

Adobe Audition Updating to Make Audio-Processing Much Easier (NAB Show 2016) | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 7:01

Adobe Audition is my choice for editing podcasts and other audio. At NAB Show 2016, Adobe demonstrated the new “Essential Sound” panel. This new panel in the multitrack editor focuses on dialog and music effects common for post-production. Select your clips and easily adjust loudness, compression, equalization, noise removal, and more. Instead of complicated dialogs, Adobe Audition's Essential Sound panel offers simple controls that are intelligently adjusted based on Audition's analysis of the audio. These effects aren't limited by simple sliders! What you do in the Essential Sound panel is applied with Audition's powerful clip effects. For example, Essential Sound provides a single slider for compression that then applies Audition's dynamic compressor with ideal settings. You or an editor can then tweak the compressor settings in the standard effects panel. Editors can also save presets for the Essential Sound panel to make it even faster to apply the desired effects. The Essential Sound panel is currently limited to clip-level effects in a multitrack project, but I expect they'll expand that in the future. Expect this Adobe Audition CC update in summer, 2016.

 Yamaha AG03 and AG06 USB mixers review | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 10:37

Yamaha’s AG03 and AG06 USB mixers are compact, versatile for podcasters, and even customizable. Here’s my review. AG03 and AG06 features Thanks to Yamaha for loaning these mixers to me for review. If you like what you see and want to purchase either of these, please use the link below this video. Both the and offer the same basic features. They each have decent microphone preamps that are powerful and clean enough for most dynamic microphones. You can also connect a condenser microphone to only channel 1 and turn on +48V phantom power. Additionally, both mixers have stereo 1/4” inputs for line-level audio. What seems unique about these mixers is their support for 3.5 mm audio devices. Both mixers accept an auxiliary stereo 3.5 mm input, which you can use to play music or sound effects from a mobile device. Even more interesting is two 3.5 mm jacks for an analog headset for separate input and output. This makes it easy to monitor through any pair of headphones, without needing a 3.5 mm to 1/4” adapter. But this also means you can connect any 3.5 mm lavaliere microphone to the headset input on the mixer. These kinds of lav mics usually require plug-in power, which most mixers don’t natively provide, but these mixers from Yamaha provide that necessary power. Plugging into the headset input will cut off and take the place of incoming audio from channel 1, and plugging into the headset output similarly cuts off and replaces the outgoing audio to the standard headphones jack. Both mixers offer two buttons for easy audio processing on channel 1. One button for compression and equalization (EQ), and the other for SPX reverb effects. Mixers with USB input and output aren’t new, but Yamaha makes the AG03 and AG06 stand out with a couple extra options in the USB interface. On either model, connecting to a Windows or OS X PC via the USB cable allows you to play audio from your PC into the mixer, even with its own input level knob. But Yamaha didn’t stop there! Both models have a three-stage switch. In the first position, you can send a dry and split output of channels 1 and 2 back to your PC. Thus, channel 1 would be on the left and channel 2 on the right. (However, monitoring through headphones or speakers would sound normal with both channels centered.) In the switch’s second position, a stereo mix of all inputs, except for the PC’s USB audio, is sent back to the PC. The third position is a loopback that sends all inputs, including the audio from the PC’s USB connection, back to the PC through the USB. And all without ground-loop interference! This makes it really easy for podcasters to live-mix audio from their PC in the loopback setting for recording or live-streaming from the same PC; but it’s not ideal for live-mixing when you have guest or cohost audio also coming from the PC’s same USB output, as that would send their voice right back to them. Both models are powered via USB when connected to a computer. They can also be connected to iOS device via USB connection kit and then be powered by any micro-USB power source (such as a pocket battery or AC power adapter). If you want to use the mixer as your PC’s audio output device, there’s a handy mute button that will silence the input audio from channels 1 and 2, while continuing to let your PC sound through. In addition to the USB output, both the AG03 and AG06 offer a stereo 1/4” headphone output, plus left and right 1/4” monitor outputs. There are also main left and right RCA outputs on the AG03, or main 1/4” outputs on the AG06. Differences between AG03 and AG06 Speaking of differences, the AG03 is a 3-channel mixer (excluding the stereo auxiliary input). But the AG06 is a 6-channel mixer (again, excluding the stereo auxiliary input). The AG06 has an additional 1/4”-XLR-combo input for a microphone or guitar, and a stereo RCA input. That additional combo input has a built-in guitar amp simul...

Cheap Sound Treatment Tests in a Commercial Office | File Type: video/mp4 | Duration: 9:04

In 2015, I moved my studio and business from my home to commercial office space. This has been one of my best business decisions! But my new studio office is not acoustically ideal. The flat walls create reverb and I have a major interstate outside my window. This video demonstrates some of my (ugly) acoustic-treatment attempts and their results.
