James Waterson reports the week’s news for Tennis Now. Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after their competitors, Nicolas Almagro, Janko Tipsarevic and Gilles Simon lost before the third round. Berdych defeated Andy Murray to reach the semifinals in Paris, and Roger Federer won his 800th career ATP match when he beat Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5. If Federer wins the tournament, he would reclaim his No. 3 ranking from Murray. The WTA announced it set new records in attendance at its year-end Championships, and it saw a significant increase in web traffic during the tournament. Finally, nine of the top 10 players on the WTA tour are from different countries, which sets a new record.

On this week's Tennis Now Point/Counterpoint show, James Waterson speaks with Master Racquet Technician Liem Thai on the subject of new racquet and string technology in pro tennis. James argues that the bygone era of wooden racquets and mutlifilament strings allowed for greater strategic variety at the top levels of tennis, while Liem counters that advances in technology has grown accessibility to the tennis as a sport and heightened its interest to a modern audience.

James Waterson reports the weekend’s tennis news. Petra Kvitova triumphed over Victoria Azarenka in three sets to win the WTA Championships in Istanbul on Sunday, her sixth title of the year. The win secured the No. 2 ranking for Kvitova, as well as a check for $1.75 million. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Bryan Brothers were the winners in Vienna, Austria, while Marin Cilic defeated Janko Tipsarevic in St. Petersburg, Russia. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are back in action this week in Basel, Switzerland, while David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro are in Valencia, Spain. Finally, Robin Soderling may miss the first tournament of the year in Brisbane because of mononucleosis, and the Agassi College Preparatory Academy received a donation of $18 million.

Marat Safin announced on Thursday he is running for Russia’s parliament, and Alex Bogomolov Jr., the fourth highest-ranked American, said he wants to play Davis Cup for Russia. Finally, Caroline Wozniacki and others have complained about grunting in the women’s game, resuming a conversation that has been going on since Monica Seles played in the 1990s.

The WTA announced player participation increased 24 percent while withdrawal rates decreased 18 percent.
