Living Humane show

Living Humane

Summary: On Living Humane we explore the nuances of living in harmony with animals and the environment. Each week, we discuss topics from pet adoption and wildlife protection to animal law and veganism. This interview-based program hosts guests from rescue groups and animal advocates to local chefs and business owners. Living Humane is Seattle and the Pacific Northwest’s local animal welfare and compassionate lifestyle program and aims to connect our broad community of advocates, conscientious consumers, pet owners, community leaders, and the humane business community. Living Humane begins each week with a short calendar of events for animal groups and businesses and an expression of gratitude to our sponsors. The hour includes two or three in-depth interviews with local community members plus three or four pauses for sponsorship spots and public service announcements. Host Christie Lagally is also an animal welfare and pet columnist for City Living Seattle newspapers and a contributing writer to Northwest Primetime and Northwest Pet Magazine, as well as former pet columnist for the Richmond News in British Columbia.

December 30: Paul Shapiro of the HSUS and Ain’t She Sweet vegan treats | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:12

This week on Living Humane: We first talked briefly with Diana Goodrich of Chimp Sanctuary Northwest, who described the recent release of Sanctuary Wine in collaboration with Ellensburg Canyon Vista Winery.  Part of the proceeds of the wine sold go to the sanctuary.  Pick some up today through the website! We next spoke with Paul Shapiro, Vice President, Farm Animal Protection for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  Shapiro has helped enact farm animal protection laws in California, Arizona, Michigan, Maine, Colorado, Oregon, and Ohio. He's also worked with dozens of companies, including some of the world's top retailers, to improve animal welfare in their supply chains.  He founded Compassion Over Killing in 1995 and served as its campaigns director until January 2005. While there, he worked as a farm animal cruelty investigator and led initiatives such as the successful effort to end the use of the misleading "Animal Care Certified" logo on battery cage egg cartons nationwide. Shapiro explained the recent $500 million lawsuit settlement against the Hallmark Meat Packing company for the egregious and unthinkable inhumane treatment of cattle at a California slaughter house.  The treatment of these cows was uncovered by HSUS investigators, and exposing this abuse of sick cattle led to the largest recall of beef and beef products in American history (ref: ABC News). In the final segment of the show, we chatted with the owners of Ain't She Sweet Vegan Baking, Jovi Fontenot and Jonathan Pretre, about their new vegan baking company and their glorious introduction of creme pies to the Seattle market. Ain’t She Sweet is a brand new vegan baking company established in Seattle, WA in 2012. They currently offer organic gourmet vegan treats, initially launching with their amazing line of oatmeal creme pies. Their flavors are Vanilla Crème, Raisin Crème, Cranberries with Lemon Crème, and Chocolate Chip with Banana Crème!  They strive to use local and organic ingredients, and the flour and oats are both gluten-free!  You can buy them at Vegan Haven, through the Ain't She Sweet website, and many other locations around Seattle.

December 23: Prairie Dog Language and Why Animal Rights Matter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:31

Show notes: Dr. Con Slobodchikoff has written a book called Chasing Doctor Dolittle about the language of animals, particularly of prairie dogs.  Dr. Slobodchikoff shares his research on animal communication. About the book:  Groundbreaking research has been done teaching animals human language, but what about the other way around? Studies have shown that lizards, squid, monkeys, and birds are talking to each other, communicating information about food, predators, squabbles, and petty jealousies. These animal languages are unique and highly adaptive. By exploring them, we come to appreciate the basis of our own languages; understanding or even “speaking” them allows us to get closer to the other species who inhabit this planet with us. The implications of animals having language are enormous. It has been one of the last bastions separating “us” from “them.”    Read more about Dr. Slobodchikoff's work at his website, conslobodchikoff.com   Pete Keller writes the blog iheartar.com about why animal rights matter.  He is an elected member of the Board of Directors for the Northwest Animal Rights Network, and founder and director of NARN’s Vegan Mentor Program, a volunteer program of long-term vegans providing information, resources and follow-up support to new vegans. He was an organizing member of Occupy Seattle’s Animal Rights and Environmentalism Work Group. He also runs the blog When Animals Resist, chronicling instances where animals fight back against their own exploitation.

December 2 – Wayward Vegan Cafe and Pawsitive Alliance | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:07

On today's show, we had two wonderful guests who really shape the world we live in to be more humane: Doh Driver is co-owner of the The Wayward Vegan Cafe in the University District in Seattle.  Wayward Vegan Cafe is Seattle's favorite vegan diner, serving comfort food free of all animal ingredients. Wayward Cafe was originally founded as a worker collective in 2004. In 2008, four friends got together to buy the struggling landmark, renaming it Wayward Vegan Cafe to better reflect its mission, and turning it into a thriving vegan restaurant. Wayward Vegan Cafe is owned by vegans, and only employs vegans, so that the staff can enjoy work that aligns with their ethics, and so that the customers have confidence that the people preparing their meals understand what "vegan" means. Yolanda Morris is co-founder, and President of Pawsitive Alliance --  an organization that partners with rescue groups to save lives across Washington by increasing shelter adoptions, preventing unplanned litters through spay and neuter as well as helping to ensure a healthy and happy home for each dog and cat through education services.  Yolanda was the winner of In Defense of Animal's Guardian Award, and is the proud parent of Leah (dog) and Lucas (dog), both rescued. Download the podcast to hear me, Doh, and Yolanda discuss vegan dining in Seattle, how Pawsitive Alliance helps bring together animal rescue groups across the State of Washington, and how to get started fostering adoptable animals for some of the many rescue groups in this area!  Plus, hear about the article that appears on the front page of today's Seattle Times about elephants in captivity and the efforts of the Friends of the Woodland Park Zoo Elephants to move the three elephants housed there to a sanctuary.
