Spiritual Seekers - Where Are We?

Do You Celebrate Others’ Failures? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:40:39

As human beings we have a tendency to celebrate other people's failures or downfalls. It is true - don't try and deny it. And, don't be too hard on yourself about it either. In Richard H. Smith's book, The Joy of Pain: Schadenfreude and the Dark Side of Human Nature, he shares a number of wonderful examples. One of which is how Homer Simpson so often celebrates if his neighbor, Ned Flanders, flounders ;)  Stop a minute and consider...do you celebrate in the failure of others?  Do you experience schadenfreude? But wait...what is schadenfreude?  We don't even have a word for it in the English language. Schadenfreude is German meaning shameful joy - basically.  It is the pleasure and joy you feel from someone else's troubles. Think of how often a celebrity or political figure has something unpleasant happen that gets plastered all over the news. There are a lot of people who will relish in that person's difficult times. Think Martha Stewart, Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton or, of course, Ned Flanders. However, this also includes your neighbors, co-workers, competitors, etc.  Should we feel this? Is it okay? This is just one of the many questions we asked our fabulous guest today! Listen in now...and then pick up a copy of his book by clicking here.       Richard Smith is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Kentucky. He majored in English at Brown University and completed his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He studies social emotions such as awe, envy, and schadenfreude. In gratitude, Drs. Rob + Janelle Alex, Ph.D.

Can you live Godless? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:42:37

Can you live Godless?  Whether or not you believe in God or Gods or Goddesses or some higher power it is tough to live "godless" simply because so many believe their way is the only way.  As Jeff Rasley says, "Beliefs divide us."  He also makes a very valid point though - "Values unite us." His book, Godless: Living a Valuable Life Beyond Beliefs, makes the case that "religious ideologies have outlived their use".  He shared during our conversation that he believes that most people can connect to each other's values and have the same core values even if their religious or spiritual beliefs are quite different.  According to Jeff, most people do not really believe in the fundamentals of their religion.  In other words, most people are not over-the-top and religious fanatics.  Of course, we all know that many of those radical people DO exist. So, is it really possible to make a powerful transformation in our world so that people could experience living a valuable life beyond beliefs?  Listen now, read his book and then consider the possibilities. Get your copy. Jeff Rasley lives on the White River in Indianapolis with Alicia and Bandit. Jeff is the author of eight books. He wrote bad poetry as a teenager and short stories in college. Newsweek, Chicago Magazine, ABA Journal, and other periodicals eventually published his feature articles. Jeff dropped out of college, saved money from factory work, then hitch-hiked across the USA. Money earned on a road crew financed travels in Europe and motorcycling from Indiana to Mexico City. Marriage and kids limited him to Himalayan mountaineering and sea-kayaking expeditions. Jeff's commitment to social activism and philanthropy began in high school when he co-founded the Goshen Walk for Hunger. In law school he fought for renters' rights, and organized the first rent strike in Indiana as president of the Indianapolis Tenants Association. He was lead counsel on class action suits for prisoners which resulted in the construction of two new jails in Central Indiana. Jeff was plaintiff in a class action requiring clean-up of the White River after it was polluted by an industrial chemical spill. Jeff is president of the Basa Village Foundation, which funds culturally sensitive development in Nepal. He is a director for five nonprofits. He is U.S. liaison for the Himalayan expedition company Adventure GeoTreks Ltd, and teaches philosophy of philanthropy at Butler University. Jeff's BA is from U of Chicago magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, All-Academic All-State Football, letter winner in swimming and football; JD Indiana University Law School cum laude, Moot Court, Indiana Law Review; M Div Christian Theological Seminary magna cum laude, co-valedictorian and Faculty Award Scholar. He has been admitted to the Indiana, US District Court, and US Supreme Court Bars. Jeff describes reading Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past as great an adventure as climbing Himalayan peaks.  How Women Experience Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:42

How we experience life as women is not always recognized by ourselves let alone our male counterparts.  Leah Carey has compiled a book centered around women telling their stories and how they live the front lines of womanhood.  These women, including Leah, talk about their experiences of harassment and how they deal with such experiences (or sometimes flat out assaults). Interestingly enough, there is even mention of how women can also contribute to gender bias.  This is not about blaming everything on men or society.  However, with education and awareness we can ALL put a stop to gender bias on either side.  Men can be biased against - if you will - just as women can be.  With that being said, please listen to this interview because we share about a couple of research experiments that have been done that clearly show how simply change a masculine name to a feminine name can bring about verbal abuse and disrespect.  Men and women, both, need to have conversation around how we each experience life. This can open a door to a new level of communication and understanding. Listen until the end because Leah shared something about herself that she has never shared during an interview before ;)       Get a copy now!    Leah Carey is an author, speaker, journalist and life coach.  Far from being born a natural optimist, Leah spent over two decades struggling with chronic depression. Now she shares the secret that helped her save her own life: sharing our stories helps us to release shame, build community, and increase effectiveness in all areas of our lives. In October 2014 she released the book You Are Not Alone : Stories from the front lines of womanhood, a reflection in ten voices on life as a woman in today's society.  She has been published in books, magazines, medical journals, and many internet sites on a variety of personal development topics.  Leah lives in northern New Hampshire with her parakeets, Cinnamon and Nutmeg, and about a bazillion of her favorite books. Want to heal things that happened in your past, but you don't want to relive them?  There a lot of jokes about psychologists and therapists asking you something along the lines of, "Now, tell me what is was like for you as a child.  Tell me about your relationship with your mother/father..."  The truth is that we do experience things in our past that can hurt us and create stumbling blocks in our future.  It doesn't matter whether they were in childhood or a week ago, but most of us aren't jumping up and down to relive those experiences either.  Dr. Karen Jacobson explains to us in today's show how Time Line Therapy® can help you heal those past traumas without reliving them!  What is Time Line Therapy®?  I am guessing you know what a general time line is, but what is your personal one?  Dr. J shares a cool way of envisioning it...and mind you, as I, Janelle, pictured mine my mind instantly went to the movie Bruce Almighty.  Yes, I a Jim Carrey fan.  The point is that with Time Line Therapy® you can go back, pull a file and neutralize your reaction to a negative experience.  Love Never Dies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:44:55

A fascinating conversation with the well-known Dr. Love!  Dr. Jamie Turndorf is an amazing soul and highly regarded as an expert in relationships.  Today's episode is about her relationship with the love of her life.  She shared how they came to be a couple - not in a typical fashion, mind you, and she shared how they experienced a tragic period when her beloved transitioned from his body due to an accident. Dr. Jamie soon came to realize, even in the haze of her deep grief, that her husband was not truly gone from her.  Eventually, this lead her to pen her newest work and bestselling, Love Never Dies: How to Reconnect and Make Peace with the Deceased.   Click to get a copy! She breaks the book down into three sections. Sharing [their] story Dispelling Harmful Beliefs Learning to Connect with Spirit You may already know you can connect to those not currently living in this lifetime, but have you ever thought about healing emotional wounds or arguments between yourself and them?  Dr. Jamie strongly urges you to accept this possibility.  You can, if you choose, heal your issues even after your loved ones are gone. Known to millions as “Dr. Love” through her website AskDrLove.com — the web's first and immensely popular relationship advice site since 1995 — Dr. Jamie Turndorf has been delighting readers and audiences for three decades with her engaging blend of professional expertise, spicy humor and ability to turn clinical psychobabble into easy-to-understand concepts that transform lives and heal relationships with spouses, partners, friends, family and colleagues.  Her methods have been featured on all the national networks, including CNN (who recently dubbed her their Resident Love Doctor), NBC, CBS, VH1, Fox, on websites like WebMD and iVillage, Discovery.com and MSNBC.com, and in Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Glamour, American Woman, Modern Bride, and Marie Claire, to name only a few. She also writes a column called “We Can Work it Out” for Psychology Today online.  Her “Ask Dr. Love” radio show can be heard in Seattle on KKNW and onTransformationTalkRadio.com.  She also hosts the “Love Never Dies” show on Hay House Radio.  Dr. Turndorf is the author of the Hay House book Kiss Your Fights Good-bye: Dr. Love’s 10 Simple Steps to Cooling Conflict and Rekindling Your Relationship, which has been endorsed by New York Times bestselling authors Jack Canfield, Dr. John Gray and John Bradshaw.  Dr. Turndorf’s career took a surprising turn following her husband’s death from a bee sting. His miraculous and over-the-top spirit manifestations (often in front of witnesses) have shown her that we don’t die...and that our relationships are not meant to end in death.  Dr. Turndorf’s experiences have led her to develop a groundbreaking new Trans-Dimensional grief therapy method that diverges from the traditional Western approach (grieve, let go and move on), which only leaves the bereaved at a greater loss. By contrast, her method offers the first vehicle in history for enabling the bereaved to reconnect and, if needed, make peace with the deceased. Her story and her new Trans-Dimensional Grief Therapy method are presented in her latest Hay House book Love Never Dies: How to Reconnect and Make Peace with the Deceased. Loving forever, Drs.  Having it All = Being it All | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:31:58

So many couples want it all, but to having it all means BEING it all!  That means taking the good with the bad and growing from all of your experiences.  It doesn't mean you have to or should repeat mistakes or unpleasant experiences.  Instead, you need to grow from them! Jon Satin and Chris Pattay shared with us the importance of being willing to look at yourself and be brutally honest with YOU.  Being willing is a key point!  The best gift you can give your sweetheart is an emotionally healthy YOU. They also shared how giving and receiving is a cycle.  Oftentimes, people have a hard time receiving or one partner seems to get stuck in the trap of always being the giver.  This can create the unfortunate expectation that one partner will always give - no questions asked. But, this can eventually create resentment!  Not something you want in your relationship. Listen to the show...you will learn so much more!      Click here to get your own Wicks of Wisdom® Linda Salvin received her Bachelor of Arts in Health Education from San Francisco State University in 1975 and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology and Environmental Health at the University of Michigan in 1977. She was ordained as a Doctor of Divinity in June, 1999 and awarded her Ph.D. in Metaphysics from the American Institute of Holistic Theology in 2008.  Dr. Linda Salvin was not born with psychic gifts. A series of devastating accidents transformed her life. A successful public health official, Linda survived a commercial airliner crash in 1981 while on company business.   As she slid down the emergency ramp, she experienced an out-of-body experience as well as hearing a loud voice speak to her which she had never heard before.  Her life changed forever February 17, 1981.  This was the beginning of her transformation from her scientific background to her psychic and spiritual evolution.  A year later, her car was struck by a fire truck in 1982, causing another out-of-body experience as well as physical injury.   And, a traumatic auto accident brought her to the brink with the white-light experience in 1984.  While not understanding what was happening, Linda continued to advance psychically.  A major surgery in 1991, proved to be another life-altering experience.  It was during her own healing period she discovered she had been given healing abilities to help other people. With each of these experiences, her spiritual connection to the Universe, her psychic and now healing gifts evolved.  Eleven years passed after the plane crash before Linda would determine where she would become most satisfied and needed with the changes.  In 1982, she accepted a position at USC in Cancer Research but did not find fulfillment and left.  There were various non-Public Health related positions until 1988 when she became a Health Educator in charge of establishing the Drug Abuse Program at Cal State Northridge on a temporary assignment.  From there she went on to work with a program where she taught AIDS education to youth on parole with the California Youth Authority.  Still dissatisfied, she sought ways to integrate her education and experiences to assist others on this new holistic and metaphysical path.  Linda reached out to begin helping and healing others.  She turned her own challenges of adversity to inspire and guide people.  In addition to developing, through referral, an international following as a respected psychic, healer and channeler in private practice, she took her skills to a wider audience via radio in 1994.  Linda was selected out of 364 psychics for a night time station. Her radio broadcasting career began as the night-time psychic on Los Angeles' KBIG 104-FM. Later she produced and hosted her own show on KIEV 870 AM in Southern California, prior to her move to syndication with CRNDigital Talk in over 350 markets. In 2004, she further syndicated her show nationally to a network of radio stations.  Salvin hosted her show every
