The Nature Teacher

Summary: We tend to think about nature as though it is something “other,” as though we are not part of it. No child must be convinced that a trip to see gorillas at the zoo is interesting, or that the fluffy seeds of dandelions can be fascinating, yet by the time they become adults, many groan and tell stories of the difficulty and boredom they faced in their high school science classes. My passion is to enable students to encounter nature in such a way that it awakens and encourages the sense of wonder and adventure we all felt as children; to remove the barriers that inhibit our inherent curiosity. I believe this is best accomplished through active participation in outdoor wilderness experiences designed to guide students in observing and thinking well about our natural world. The goal is to develop a fascination with exploration of our world, our place in it, and our responsibilities to care for it and for each other. ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR*** Christopher Bryan holds a BSE in Biology from Emporia State University, Emporia KS (1995), an MSEd in Curriculum and Instruction from Newman University, Wichita, KS (2005), and an MDiv from Covenant Seminary, St. Louis, MO (2009).  002 – LENS Philosophy of Science | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Christopher Bryan explains how the philosophy of science at Bishop Seabury Academy in Lawrence, KS is rooted in the school's Mission Statement. Simply stated, as humans encounter nature they discover their Limits (L), Effects (E), and Needs (N), all of which are best overcome through Society (S). This is the LENS through which we explore nature and discover what it means to be human.

 001 – Return to Nature | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 3:04

As my eyes scanned the faces of my students for understanding, I saw instead the glazed-over look of boredom. My students had long ago abandoned interest in biology, but still resigned themselves to polite compliance by maintaining eye contact and scribbling down notes. Young children love to go to the zoo. No one has to persuade them that it’s interesting. No one has to remind them to pay attention to the lions, or gawk at the giraffes, or make faces at the orangutan. What had happened to all that curiosity and wonder? Was it gone for good or could the fire be rekindled? This is the beginning of the story of how I found my way back. How we began to encounter nature more naturally.
