This is the July, 28th Critical Mass Ride for Pride during Vancouver BC's LGBT Pride week. Critical Mass rides empower cylcists, bladers, and skaters to take over the streets to urge the public to use transporation in an environmentaly friendly and safe way. This episode of Beyond the Ghetto - Within the Village features Janine Fuller of Little Sister's Bookstore talking of the Vancouver book emporium's long battle with Canada customs and the ramifications of such censorship on access to LGBT books in Canada. Author Daniel Gawthrop discusses a within-the-village tendency to limit the discourse of issues such as inter-racial dating which have been raised by his latest memoir; the Rice Queen Diaries.

Two rice queens talk about our most passionate subject: the dark haired boyz we care so much about :) Today we are talking to Vancouver author Daniel Gawthrop. Daniel joins the BTG arts segment to discuss his new book The Rice Queen Diaries which is published by Arsenal Pulp Press. He also reads selections from the memoir and talks about his observations of VietNamese and Thai culture from a gay perspective. Stephen pitches in about Japan (again). They both talk about Fridae.com as an important resource for gay asia and the site's editors declining to review the book; and, of course, the highs and lows of interracial dating.

First a "rant" or, rather, a question about whether the movie Flight 93 should have indicated passenger hero Mark Bingham as gay. Then an interview with sensual Vancouver musician Rogr Lee about how 9/11 galvanized his songwriting and political awareness for the past few years.

What happens when one of the most prestigious HIV/AIDS hospitals and a prominent facility in one of the larger gay communities in North America proposes to move out of the Village? Well, a political furor is what. Listen to the elderly, physicially challenged persons, LGBT businesspeople, ambulance drivers, a gay MLA, and a transgendered prostitute take a stand against hospital relocation and health care privatization.

We're not in Kanuck paradise anymore! On this third NEW show we discuss the recent and coming controversies for both the lesbigay and wider community under the new Conservative Stephen Harper government. We look at how gay and lesbian MPs are helping to drive the challenge to PM Stephen Harper's recent cabinet appointments and the MP David Emerson defection from Liberal to Tory. Then we relax and laugh with Vancouver writer and poet Billeh Nickerson at the Queer and Outloud open mike on Commercial Drive in Vancouver, our sister ghetto.

In our sophomore installment we take you on an AUDIO tour of video stores both within the village and beyond the ghetto to see in which places one can be most comfy buying gay videos and mags: on our own turf or out among the str8s buying theirs. Includes Cody's rant on acceptance of gay romance and marriage in Canada but what about the gay sex aspects?

Beyond the Ghetto follows the lives, arts, politics, and community events of gays and lesbians who are both within the traditional North American lesbigay villages and those who are living beyond: from the Vancouver Canada burbs to overseas. We are Beyond the Ghetto -Within the Village.
