/ Best Robotics – Central Alabama Community College / Alabama is quickly becoming a national leader in robotics technology instruction and implementation with the Alabama Robotics Technology park in Decatur and with major industrial partners expanding their robotic inventory. So it seems only natural that the education needed to pursue jobs in these industry sectors would start in middle and high school. Enter the BEST program or Boosting Engineering Science and Technology. The mission of the program is to inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, science, technology, and math through participation in a sports-like science- and engineering-based robotics competition. It’s this sports-like competition that brought us to Wallace State Community College in Selma. They hosted a regional competition involving 20 middle and high school teams from 12 counties in Alabama. Called the Great Freight Challenge, students from participating schools had to build and program their robots before the competition. We caught up with the students and instructor from Tipton-Durant Middle School in Selma a week before the competition

/ University of South Alabama – Civil Engineering / Civil Engineering is very essential to the planning, designing, and construction of all types of infrastructures. This is because civil engineering focuses on the public and environmental health of the surrounds of where the infrastructure will be constructed. They deal with important issues like air pollution, groundwater and waste disposal, and flooding and erosion issues that could arise from construction in a particular area or with particular materials. At the University of South Alabama, the Civil Engineering department has been training their students not only the career of being a Civil Engineer, but showing they have been proactively involved with real life situations happening in their community.

/ Alabama Robotics Technology Park & the AIDT Maritime Training Center / This week’s show is a little different than most. We’re going to show you some of the highlights of the openings of two new state of the art workforce-training facilities here in Alabama. Located at opposite ends of the state and offering training for markedly different skills, the Maritime Training Center in Mobile will support the shipbuilding industry and the Robotics Technology Park in Decatur will offer world-class robotics training to students from around the world. Both facilities are run by AIDT, Alabama’s workforce training program. AIDT also produces this show, On The Job.

/ LWT Communications: Create-A-Thon / Typically people will donate their time or money when it comes to helping out with philanthropies or charities, but one company has a more “creative” approach to giving back to the community. This year, LWT communications hosted their 9th Annual CreateAthon Event. The CreateAthon provides free strategic marketing planning, creative and interactive development services to non-profit organizations. During this 24-hour period, LWT will work on projects ranging from web site development to branding to strategic marketing planning to brochure development, all “Pro Bono” for a select group of Non-Profits.

/ Northeast Alabama Community College – Criminal Justice Program / This week we are at Northeast Alabama Community College to visit their Criminal Justice Program. We learned about Crime Scene Investigation, practiced at their firing range, ran the obstacle course, and spoke with students and instructors about the programs offered.
