Working Mom, Traveling Mom With Carol Cain: The Home Hour Episode 51 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel for a living? What if it meant taking your kids on exotic trips - and sometimes, leaving them home so you could do your job?  Building a career as a travel writer takes a lot of work and determination...and when you have a family, it also requires attention to the delicate balance between your career and what's going on at home. Today I'm thrilled to talk to Carol Cain of GirlGoneTravel.com about what's really involved in being a travel writer with kids, how she keeps her kids involved in her career (and keeps them on board when they need to stay behind,) how she and her spouse keep the home fires burning while she's away, and how she evolved her line presence from "mom blogger" to "travel blogger." We also talk about parenting teens, buying a new house, and more!  Click the play button to listen now! PS: In the show's intro I mentioned Live: Creating A Life You Love, a year-long e-course brought to you by Mandi Ehman from LifeYourWay.net. I'm thrilled to be this month's guest host, writing and speaking about the topic of LOVE. If you could use a little more love in your life - or just want to take some time this year to focus on creating a more fulfilling life for yourself and your family - head over and sign up!  As always, thank you for listening and supporting The Home Hour. If you've been listening for a while and haven't left an honest review on iTunes (or wherever you prefer to listen) I would so appreciate you doing so. Just visit the podcast page here and click “View in iTunes,” then select the tab called "Ratings and Reviews" and choose "Write a Review."  State Of The Blog & Behind The Scenes In My Home! The Home Hour Episode 50 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:51

This is Episode 50 of The Home Hour! Hard to believe, right? Fifty episodes!  For this week's podcast Sarah and I got together and chatted about a few things. First, I give a "state of the blog" address, with updates on where we're headed in 2015, as well as a couple of announcements about the future of the podcast (hint: more of a good thing is, well, a good thing!).  Then Sarah turned the tables and interviewed me, which was really fun. Since we've realized that a lot of our podcast listeners are coming to us from outside the realm of The Happiest Home blog, we wanted to give a little behind the scenes look into my home and my family (or, as we say in the show's intro each week, my four walls). In addition to discovering that Sarah and I share a new favorite vegetable to serve roasted and a love of inappropriately funny television shows and our daughters' phonetic spelling, we talked about my kids, my latest style obsession, and what's on my meal plan this week. I hope you'll listen and let us know what you think! Click the play button to listen now! PS: In the show we talked about last week's episode, an interview with teacher Erica Ladd. You can catch that one right here. We also promised we'd include a few photos - they'll make much more sense once you listen to the show! As always, thank you for listening and supporting The Home Hour. If you've been listening for a while and haven't left an honest review on iTunes (or wherever you prefer to listen) I would so appreciate you doing so. Just visit the podcast page here and click “View in iTunes,” then select the tab called "Ratings and Reviews" and choose "Write a Review."  The Parent-Teacher Relationship With Erica Ladd Of Candid Classroom: The Home Hour Episode 49 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:17

Do you ever wonder what your kids' teachers really wish you knew? This time of year, it can be easy to start feeling like a slacker in the "school mom" department. Re-entry after winter break is difficult, and sometimes things like reading logs and nutritious lunches start to slip for the best of us. (Note: I am not counting myself among the best of us.)  If you can relate, you're going to love my discussion with Erica Ladd, creator of The Candid Teacher blog, author of Candid Classroom: What Parents Want To Know And Teachers Want To Tell Them*, and co-host of The Girl Next Door podcast. Erica's point of view about what REALLY helps kids do their best in school is refreshingly reassuring and so, so simple.  We also talk about Erica's ongoing journey in the foster-to-adopt system, how to look past test scores and other numbers when assessing how good a school is, and more! I know you're going to love our conversation, so click the play button to listen now! (And then scroll down to find links to the resources we talked about during the show today.) Erica mentioned two of her favorite adoption-related resources: The Adoption Decision: 15 Things You Want To Know Before Adopting, by Laura Christianson and  In On It: What Adoptive Parents Would Like You To Know About Adoption. A Guide for Relatives and Friends, by Elisabeth O'Toole You can also find Erica at her personal blog, LaddVenture, and on Twitter and Facebook.  As always, thank you for listening and supporting The Home Hour.  Showing Love Through Every Day Care, with Leticia Barr & Jim Higley: The Home Hour Episode 48 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:39

Is doing a load of laundry or washing the dishes really just a "chore"?  Or could the act of caring for our families in these little, everyday ways add up to much more over the course of a year, a childhood, a life? That's what I'm talking about in today's episode of The Home Hour, along with guests Jim Higley of Bobblehead Dad and Leticia Barr of Tech Savvy Mama. Last week the three of us attended the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on behalf of Whirlpool and their new campaign, Every day, care. We got to check out some of Whirlpool's new innovations geared toward making the act of caring for our families - and teaching them to care for us and each other - simper and more satisfying. In today's show Jim, Leticia and I talk a little about the products we're most excited about, and a lot about chores, household labor, and how the small acts of washing, cooking, cleaning and drying can be a way to show love, every day.  Listen now! As always, thank you for listening and supporting The Home Hour. If you've been listening for a while and haven't left an honest review on iTunes (or wherever you prefer to listen) I would so appreciate you doing so. Just visit the podcast page here and click “View in iTunes,” then select the tab called "Ratings and Reviews" and choose "Write a Review."  Christmas At Home With Meagan & Sarah: The Home Hour Episode 46 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

With just a week left until Christmas, things are both ramping up and winding down - depending on whom you ask. School lets out this Friday for both Sarah's and my kids, and since neither of us is traveling for the holidays this year we're both looking forward to low-key days at home next week. On the other hand, I'm performing in a musical this weekend (I know! you can get the full scoop in the first few minutes of the episode), and Sarah has had visiting family on and off since before Thanksgiving, so there's never a dull moment for either of us. For the last podcast of 2014 Sarah and I chatted about all of the above - performing at Christmas time, our plans for the holidays, our favorite things about Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and our best tips for traveling with kids during the holidays. It was a great conversation and I hope you'll let us keep you company as you bake or wrap or drive around this week. Listen now, or read on for more about what you can expect from The Home Hour in 2015! Next Thursday is Christmas Day, so there won't be a new podcast, but the following week I've got an amazing show lined up for you with some inspiration for the new year that you won't want to miss. Look for it on New Year's Day! As we close out 2014, I just want to thank you for listening and supporting The Home Hour. This podcast continues to be one of my favorite ways to connect and share, and I'm looking forward to another great year.  Your Thanksgiving Questions, Answered: The Home Hour Episode 43 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:18

After a break last week (I was traveling in Florida with the whole family), The Home Hour is back this week with a brand new episode I think you're going to love. In this episode, Sarah and I answer - to the best of our ability - YOUR questions about hosting Thanksgiving in your home. We talked about timing the food, seating the guests, managing your own stress, and even discussed what kind of dishes you'll need to serve all that yummy food on. (Scroll down for a glimpse at the vintage Pyrex I use for casual but special serving.)  Start listening now, or read on for more on how to host Thanksgiving (and actually enjoy yourself at the same time). Here are some of the resources Sarah and I mentioned to help you through Thanksgiving (and any other holiday-hosting you'll be doing): Episode 38 of The Home Hour featuring professional event stylist Kristen Forgione: If you missed this the first time, it's a must-listen. We promise, you'll feel calmer and more excited about hosting a gathering in your home. We talked a little about serving dishes, and I shared that I use mostly vintage Pyrex dishes (with a few Fiestaware and jadeite pieces thrown in) because they're interesting, pretty, and super practical for almost any occasion, from a big family get-together to storing leftovers. Here's a photo of my collection! The top shelf is an odd mix of Jadeite, Fiestaware and other dishes in shades of green; the lowest shelf are from the Pyrex Horizon Blue collection and the higher shelf are Snowflake Blue. Pyrex Love is a great reference for identifying and locating different Pyrex patterns if you love it like I do! The Thanksgiving Turkey That Wasn't: A good reminder about just how LONG it takes to defrost a turkey, and how, in the end, it's okay if things don't go as planned. Thanksgiving Recipes From Our Kitchens To Yours: Sarah and I rounded up our Thanksgiving menu inspiration and shared it last year - there are some great links here if you're still planning your menu! But wait, there's more! The podcast is the kickoff to a series of posts Sarah and I will roll out over the next few days - all designed to help you host a sane and satisfying Thanksgiving in your home. Be sure to check the blog through the weekend and early next week for new posts! Would you like to ask us a question and have it answered on the podcast?  Read-Aloud Revival With Sarah Mackenzie: The Home Hour Episode 41 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We all know we're supposed to read to our kids every day, right? But it can be easier said than done. Between tongue-twisting passages in picture books and toddlers crawling over you while you're trying to read to older siblings, reading aloud is one of those things that can be kind of a drag for a busy mom...and it's only too easy to let life get in the way and knock reading off the daily to-do list. Today's guest, Sarah Mackenzie from The Read-Aloud Revival podcast, has the antidote: a laid-back, just-do-what-you-can approach to creating a read-aloud culture in your home. As a homeschooling mom of six (including twins!) she definitely understands the obstacles parents can face when it comes to reading aloud regularly, and she has some great tips and ideas for making it easier, less stressful, and more fun for everyone. Listen now! (Or scroll down to find links to some of the resources we discussed in the show.)  Discipline At Every Age: The Home Hour Episode 40 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

What's your discipline style? Are you relaxed? Authoritative? Do you use punishments, rewards, natural consequences? When a reader asked Sarah and I for some advice on a common - but totally exasperating - toddler tendency, we realized that not only do we rarely write about discipline here on the blog, but that we had never actually discussed our own personal discipline philosophies. So we decided to answer the question together on The Home Hour without talking it over first. Going in blind on a discipline discussion? Sounds risky, but we thought it would be an interesting way to find out more about each other's parenting styles.  It turned out to be a great conversation, and we know you're going to love it.  Listen now! (Or scroll down to find links to some of the stories and resources we discussed in the show.) Here are some of the links we talked about in this episode:  Zen Parenting Radio podcast (and here's the episode of The Home Hour featuring Zen Parenting Radio hosts Todd and Cathy Adams) Aha! We'd love to hear what you thought about our discussion. Do you have a similar discipline style to either Sarah or I? Has it changed from child to child or stage to stage?  Can “Mean Moms” Raise Happy Kids? Denise Schipani On The Home Hour Episode 39 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Has anyone ever told you that you're a "mean mom?" Today I’m happy to welcome my good friend, author and blogger Denise Schipani, who takes pride in her "mean mom" title. Even though on the surface Denise and I might seem different (she’s the meanie and I’m all about the happy), in reality, we have a lot in common: we both love our kids like crazy, treasure family time, and gladly assume a role of authority in our homes.  So what does it really mean to be a “mean mom”, and how can it actually be good for kids? How can we learn to embrace the word “no”? And how can we move past the idea that we’re too busy and distracted to set limits and create family traditions? This is an interview from the very early days of this podcast, when it was still called "The Kitchen Hour" and most of you weren't listening yet. Since that episode somehow managed to fall off of iTunes and I can't seem to get it back, I thought now was a great time to bring it back with some new commentary from yours truly.  Listen now! (Or scroll down to find links to some of the stories and resources we discussed in the show.) Resources and links from the show: In the show, Denise and I discussed the impact of modern-day technology and whether it’s really given us “more time”. I mentioned an article I had recently read. The link to the article no longer seems to be working, but you can read a summary and my commentary as well as my thoughts on Lillian Gilbreth of “Cheaper by the Dozen” fame. If you want to fall further down that “Do our appliances really make our live easier?” rabbit hole, you can check out this book: More Work for Mother.  Comfy Cool: Leggings, Boots, Jackets & Other Fall Fashion Must-Haves on The Home Hour Episode 37 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Did you know you can totally pass off stretch pants as street clothes now?  In today's episode of The Home Hour, Shana Draugelis of The Mom Edit shows us how. (Hint: it's all about the jacket, the boot, and the accessories.) We also discuss updating your wardrobe for fall by focusing on just a few key pieces, how to wear a hat without looking goofy, and whether or not short hair needs to be shampooed. And in the intro, I share a really big parenting mistake I made this week, how I was able to turn it around and make it right, and what I learned about reaching for "Pinterest perfection" in our home projects.  Listen now! During the show I got really excited about these textured leggings from Lou & Grey I also mentioned these ombre tights from Athleta I own these scuba-side-panel leggings from Express and love them, love them, love them.  More style posts:  Shana also wrote a whole post about fall jackets recently, which you'll definitely want to check out, along with the post she just did today with her must-haves for fall. Oh, and here's Shana's post from a few years back that features me trying on goofy hats at Meijer!    Birthday chatter:  Here's the podcast I mentioned in the intro that featured Sarah and I discussing kids' birthday parties. And, my general philosophy about the "good-enough" birthday party. Would you like to ask Shana a style question? Or ask me a question about any old thing?
