The U.S. Mission Uganda is joining forces with Rotary in Uganda, Rotarians For Family Health AIDS Prevention, Inc., the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, Century Bottling Company Limited, the AIDS Information Centre, and the Ministry of Health to announce Rotary Family Health Days 2013.  From May 9th to 11th over 60 Rotary Clubs and their partners will provide free health services at 140 sites across Uganda. The health services include HIV testing and counseling, malaria screening and treatment, diabetes testing and general medical check-ups, among others.  This clip features Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Mission Uganda, Virginia Blaser, and Stephen Mwanje, a director of Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS Prevention, discussing Rotary Family Health Days.

“YouthWorks!” is a 30-minute weekly TV show produced in partnership with NTV Uganda to promote youth entrepreneurship.  The U.S. Mission is proud to support this program as part of its broad youth outreach effort in Uganda. The program premiered on NTV in early March and will air every Thursday from 7:30-8:00 p.m. until May 23.  Each episode highlights the work of young entrepreneurs and pairs them with mentors who help them realize ideas and innovations while  imparting critical business skills.  The mentors, who are drawn from successful Ugandan businesses, will continue to advise their mentees after the show and have generously offered to take on additional mentees.  In this clip, “Youth Works!” team leader Rusia Orikiriza discusses what the show is all about and why it matters. Read more at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Youth-Works-Uganda/294356380682981

 U.S. Ambassador Scott H. DeLisi celebrates World Health Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:00

In celebration of World Health Day, on April 10 the U.S. Ambassador Scott H. DeLisi delivered a major health policy speech to a standing room only crowd of medical students and professors at Makerere University's College of Health Sciences. Also in attendance were Ministry of Health officials, members of parliament, journalists, and representatives from the health community along with other U.S. Embassy leadership including the Deputy Chief of Mission, the PEPFAR Coordinator, the Peace Corps Country Director, USAID's Deputy Mission Director, the CDC Country Director, and the country program directors for NIH and Makerere University's Walter Reed Project. The speech, titled, "The U.S. Government and the People of Uganda - Working Together for a Healthier Future," highlighted two key messages: Ugandans must own the future of their health care and the American people stand in partnership with Uganda as it works toward a healthier future.  Peace Corps Volunteer Runs International Women’s Day Essay Contest | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

For International Women’s Day 2013, Peace Corps Volunteers Chelsea Milko and Betty Lambert coordinated an essay writing competition with two Arua-area schools. The project aimed to help Ugandan youth develop their personal philosophies related to the challenges facing women and girls in Uganda while also building their writing and oratory skills. With the help of Guma Simon and Atiku Alexander of Radio Pacis in Arua, West Nile, Chelsea and Betty visited Mvara Secondary and Jiako Primary schools to kick off the project, spark a healthy discussion, and provide essay writing tips. Each participating writer received a blue book and pencil and were encouraged to keep writing well beyond the end of the competition. Out of 112 submissions, 5 were selected as winners and invited to read their essays live on-air during Radio Pacis’ ‘Pacis Youth’ program on March 9th. In this clip, Chelsea speaks with some of the essay contest winners about their submissions.

 Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Pelletier Lauds Apps4Africa Competition | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Apps4Africa is an annual, Africa-wide competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of State in partnership with Appfrica International. Apps4Africa 2012--the third annual contest--challenged innovators to develop sustainable, technology-based solutions to youth unemployment. The three winners, including Ugandan Titus Mawano with his app "Ffene," a low-cost business management platform, were honored at a March 6, 2013, closing ceremony at Kampala's Hive Colab, where Ambassador DeLisi and Deputy Assistant Secretary Pelletier congratulated the winning teams. In this clip, Deputy Assistant Secretary Pelletier discusses the importance of technology in moving Africa forward, and emphasizes the U.S. Government's continued commitment to supporting African innovators.

 U.S. Mission in Uganda Partners with Ugandan Police Force to Promote Community Policing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Here Dr. Nicholas Walling of the U.S. Mission in Uganda, along with Assistant Superintendent of Police Philbert Waibi, speaks about the U.S.-Ugandan community policing and counterterrorism project, which to improve communities’ relations with their local police while improving counterterrorism effectiveness. Four teams of trainers, composed of instructors from the Uganda Police Force Training Academy in Masindi and officers from the Counterterrorism Unit in Kampala, have been travelling around Uganda for more than two months to reach local police and the communities they serve. In each community, the trainers teach local police a community problem-solving method, and then conduct a live community forum, which includes a terrorism awareness program. So far the teams have trained approximately 700-800 police officers in the community policing model, and have hosted approximately 15,000 people in community forums across Uganda.
