BrianMadden.com Podcast #117: Farewell Justin Meisinger! (And a look at some of our favorite videos from the past 5 years) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

After more than five years of working with us, Justin Meisinger is leaving our team to go work at Tesla. Justin has been our video editor, camera operator, podcast producer, and/or in charge of anything else we do that involves videos, graphics, or sound. We've had a lot of fun over the years. So today we decided to do a podcast with Justin as our guest to reminisce about all the cool videos we've made over the years. We've gone to some cool places, rented out some crazy locations, and bought some awesome props over the years. Also we kind of want to make sure we can still figure out how to run the podcast equipment after Justin leaves. :) Here are the various videos we referenced in the podcast:   The one with the animated tablet and the tiny gymnasium (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one where we had to change a beer bottle to a soda can (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one with lasers and explosions (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one where Brian chased the bus. (Our first funny video ever!) (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one with four Brians (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one where Brian ran down the street naked, where Brian wore drag on a city bus, and where Brian was yelled at by a crazy person (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one where we rented a porn studio (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one where Brian yelled at strangers through a bullhorn (Please visit the site to view this media)   The one where we went to Maker Faire (Please visit the site to view this media)

BrianMadden.com Podcast #115: Michel Roth joined us to talk about the mega trends in desktop virtualization | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

Longtime friend Michel Roth joined us on the podcast to catch up on what he's been up to over the years and to talk about what he thinks the mega trends are in the desktop virtualization space these days. We talked about how Michel got into IT, and what life is like as a Product Manager for an EUC vendor (Michel has held that role at a few companies over the years). After that we talked about how application management (or app layering) is hot and why hyper-convergence is a game changer for people that don't want to be "hardware people." We wrapped up talking about how the cloud is impacting desktop virt, and about the struggles of maintaining a secure, but usable environment. Michel has a lot of good thoughts, and will be contributing articles to BrianMadden.com in the coming weeks. You can follow Michel on twitter at @michelroth.

BrianMadden.com Podcast #75 (Special Edition): StarMobile's Todd Fryburger joined to discuss app transformation | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

On this special edition (i.e. "sponsored") BrianMadden.com podcast, StarMobile CEO Todd Fryburger joined us to talk about recent attention around app transformation and how their product fits in. If you're not familiar with app transformation (we've written a lot about it), it's the practice of taking an application made for a desktop user and transforming it (or re-factoring it) into a mobile application on the fly with no modification to source code. Until recently, the only way to mobilize a legacy application was to rewrite it or deliver it via some sort of VDI or RDSH session that technically worked but resulted in a less-than-ideal end user experience. App transformation breathes new life into those legacy apps, extending their usefulness to other form factors while leveraging technology that's very familiar to us.

BrianMadden.com Podcast #74: Noah Wasmer and Ashish Jain talk about VMware Identity Manager and the state of SSO and mobility. | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

Last month VMware announced their next-generation identity and access management platform, VMware Identity Manager, so for this podcast we had VMware's Noah Wasmer and Ashish Jain join Gabe and Jack to dig in. Besides going over VMware Identity Manager, we got to cover a lot of ground in the SSO and identity and access management space. Obviously identity is becoming very important as companies use more SaaS apps, and the issues are being compounded by mobility. This podcast was a lot of fun and very informative!

BrianMadden.com Podcast #73: A frank conversation about enterprise mobility, Part 2: How will we get to the new EMM era? | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

On last week's podcast, Brian and I set out to discuss the state of enterprise mobility. This was pretty interesting because he's a 20-year veteran of the desktop space and I'm on the mobile side. We covered a lot of ground, including Brian’s view of the world; Jack’s view of MDM and EMM up to this point; and the state of EMM. This week we continued the conversation by talking about how we'll actually get to the future style of EUC management.

BrianMadden.com Podcast #72: A frank conversation about the state of enterprise mobility. Does EMM matter today? | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

This week's show is just with Brian & Jack. Brian is a 20-year old school "desktop guy", and Jack's a 4-year new school "mobile guy." They discuss the current state of the enterprise mobility market, including: Does today's EMM solve the problems that need to be solved in today's "Windows-centric" world? What does EMM software do really? When will enterprise mobility in general be mature? What do we need to do to get there? Should we manage Windows 10 with MDM? For those who want a video to accompany the podcast audio, just watch this clip of Brian, since if you were watching him live, this is basically what he looked like the whole time: Today's topic was very interesting and we only started to scratch the surface of the conversation. We'll pick up next week, same day, same time, to continue where we left off . . .

BrianMadden.com Podcast #62 (Special Edition): Raytheon joined us to talk apps for Virtual Mobile Infrastructure | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

In this podcast Ashok Sankar, VP of Product Strategy and Development for Raytheon Cyber Products joined us to talk about Virtual Mobile Infrastructure (VMI). We began by wrapping up what happened at the Raytheon conference, and talked in more detail about the use cases for Raytheon’s VMI solution. Oddly enough, they’re the same as RDSH–don’t worry about the endpoint being secure, just secure the mobile application running in the secure environment, apps are running in the datacenter, etc... The difference is that in this case, you’re using a mobile device not to access Windows apps, but to access real mobile apps, designed for mobile devices and used by mobile devices. You can even “run" Android apps on iOS that have visibility to the sensors on the device (GPS, camera, accelerometer, etc…) We learned that they use some skinning type functionality on the client that can make apps look more appropriate for the OS that is accessing them. Even though it’s all Android apps on the backend, they’ve put effort in to make them look more native regardless of the OS. We also talked about applications and about how organizations don’t necessarily want to develop apps for every platform to embrace BYOD, and that this allows companies to focus just on a single platform that they can deploy to any platform.  Also on the topic of applications is that with a solution like VMI, companies don’t have to worry about the complexity of MAM. No special apps, devices, or work/personal containers. We spent a lot of time towards the end talking about how in the future the applications won’t even be the determining factor in how we deliver things. We’ll have data, and we need to do something with that data, and that “something” is what is going to change. Think of spam. When is the last time you went through your spam folder? In 2004 that was a once-a-day activity, but today it’s just done for you.  These conversations with Ashok have been thought-provoking with regards to both the present and the future of mobility and applications, so we highly encourage you to listen to this and the other podcasts in our Raytheon series (here and here).

BrianMadden.com Podcast #57 (Special Edition): Sphere3D talks about their microvisor-like app virtualization solution. | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

Today we have a special edition (i.e. "Sponsored") podcast with Sphere3D today at 9:30PST (12:30 Eastern) to discuss their hardware and application delivery platform. To be honest, I don't exactly know what they do, so join us live (on this page) to find out and join the conversation!

BrianMadden.com Podcast #54 (Special Edition): Infinio joined us to talk about storage optimization in VDI | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

Storage optimization for VDI is as hot a topic as there can be these days, and there are many solutions on the market. Picking one can be a challenge when faced with so many decisions (there are over a dozen companies with solutions just for VDI alone!). It's a good problem to have when you consider that just a few years ago we were forced to deploy expensive solutions in order to provide a near-local VDI experience, but today that no longer needs to be an excuse. With so many solutions available, there's optimization solutions for just about any situation, persistent or non-persistent. Infinio launched their Accelerator product late last year and joined us to talk about it and storage optimization in general. Here's the graphing screenshot mentioned around 38 minutes into the show:

BrianMadden.com Live Podcast #53: 2013 year in review | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

This podcast was originally recorded on December 17, but we're republishing it today in case you missed it since we're off through the end of the year. For today's show, Brian, Gabe, and Jack got together to talk about the biggest stories of 2013 Here's a quick rundown of what we covered: We started out the year talking about the Microsoft Surface RT. Brian is annoyed by the iPhone's autocorrect feature. Samsung KNOX was announced. VMware launched Horizon Suite. Brian wrote "The merging of desktop virtualization and Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). Welcome to the new new end user computing." Pretty much all EMM vendors now do both MDM and MAM. We heard rumors about "Mohoro"—Azure-hosted DaaS from Microsoft. VMware released Horizon Mobile for Android. With improvements in graphics and storage, two major barriers to VDI adoption have been solved. XenDesktop 7 arrived at Citrix Synergy. Jack's book was released. Android thin clients from Dell/Wyse and ViewSonic were another recurring theme this year. We spent half the summer and fall talking about iOS 7. At VMworld, we heard about VMware-hosted DaaS, vSAN, and Mirage supporting VDI. A few weeks later, VMware bought Desktone. By the end of November, Gabe declared that 2014 would be the year everyone talks about DaaS a lot. BlackBerry was a huge topic of conversation all year long. Amazon announced Workspaces, its DaaS offering. We consider this to be the biggest news of the year. Thanks for listening!

BrianMadden.com Live Podcast #52, with guest Dan Cordingley, CEO of Teradici | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: Unknown

Today's podcast was an interview with Dan Cordingley, CEO of Teradici. (You should know Teradici as the creator of the PC-over-IP remoting protocol.) It's hard to believe that Teradici has been around for ten years. I first talked to Dan back in 2004 about this "upcoming remoting protocol they were working on for blade PCs." I can't remember what my initial reaction was, probably it was negative since PC-over-IP is very successful now and I'm wrong about almost everything. For years Teradici was known as providing PC-over-IP protocol for VMware's VDI solution, and more recently they've started building hardware accelerator cards for servers and they've gone to market with a PC-over-IP solution for RDSH. The recent big news though is that Amazon chose Teradici PC-over-IP as the remoting protocol for Amazon's WorkSpaces DaaS solution. I talked to Dan a few weeks ago about that announcement, and in addition to talking about Amazon and DaaS in general, we talked about all sorts of things happening in Teradici's world and how they're evolving as a company. At the end of the call I said something like, "You know, this would make a good podcast!" A few weeks later and Dan's in the Bay Area, so here's our podcast!
