Podcast – Tokens

Summary: Like Garrison Keillor meets Bill Moyers; like Thomas Merton goes to the Opry; like Mark Twain--with all his wit, satire, and social conscience--meets God, and likes the God he meets. Nashville's New 'Old Time Radio' Show is the place where social critique, outstanding music, compelling stories, best-selling author interviews, and understated theology all intersect, for a really good time.

Hello my friends and welcome to another episode of the Tokens podcast, Dispatches from the Buckle. This week we continue with the year-in-review festivities as we've turned our social media editor loose on the first year material to create another "best of" show. This week, we hear from our back catalogue of hymns and spirituals, including an instrumental version of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"—a performance that features Aubrey Haynie's "broke bow" style of fiddle, allowing him to play chords on his violin, most outstanding, indeed—next we share Odessa Settles' rendition of "Were You There", followed by "There is a Fountain" performed by Buddy Greene, Vince Gill, Sonya Isaacs, and our host Lee C. Camp. And we conclude with an excerpt from Odessa's performance of "Oh Freedom" from our Civil War Show. A reminder that tickets are on sale for our upcoming Ryman show the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving; visit tokensshow.com/tickets for more information. This week, with the winds of war blowing, we have been reminded of two vivid segments from previous Tokens Shows. First, from our "Wisdom of the Skeptic" show in Malibu, CA, we hear from Hal Holbrook, who quotes the closing prayer from Mark Twain's "War Prayer." Second, we hear from our friend Derek Webb, who, during our "Politics of Jesus" show, sang his fine song "A King and A Kingdom" for us. We close out with a reprise of "Light from the Lighthouse" from that night. We also announce that tickets for our annual Ryman show will go on sale at 10:00 am, 6 September. Thanks for joining us again this week. Peace, Be sure to let all your friends know about our socio-cultural experiment here. Remember, you can subscribe to Dispatches from the Buckle on ITUNES.  Dispatches from the Buckle – 049 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:12

This week we’re pleased to feature a very special extended interview our host Lee C. Camp conducted back in 2009, during his research for Who Is My Enemy?, with the Rev. Dr. Naim Ateek, head of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem. In addition to other things, Dr. Ateek was the first to articulate a Palestinian theology of liberation in his book, Justice and Only Justice: A Palestinian Theology of Liberation. We hope you enjoy hearing the conversation these two shared together on a sunny May day amidst the surrounding traffic and the neighbor’s roosters. Near the end of the interview, Dr. Ateek mentions the Sabeel Prayer; the text of that prayer is as follows: Merciful and loving God, we give you thanks for the many blessings you have so graciously given us. Thank you for your presence and guidance as we walk the way of peace. Bless the work of Sabeel and its friends, local and international. Guide its ecumenical, interfaith, and justice ministries. Grant us all the courage to confront oppression. Strengthen our commitment to the work of justice, peace, and reconciliation among all people and especially between Palestinians and Israelis. Help us all to see your image in each other. Empower us to stand up for truth and to respect the dignity of every human being. And to you alone be glory and honor now and forever. Amen.
