MENTOR #64 Joseph Grenny "Crucial Conversations" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:37

Our success in life is dictated by the quality of relationships we can engender. Some people seem better at negotiating better quality outcomes (for all) than others do – they work with people rather than through people. They are able to hold deeper, more honest conversations that create a new level of bonding and are able to transform people, situations and relationships. By being prepared to hold these conversations (often early) they ensure clarity over responsibility, define expectations and hence maintain high levels of performance. When we let these conversations go by, we let standards slip and unwittingly give permission for unwanted behavior to continue. Crucial conversations lie all around us – enjoy this thirty minute Mentor of the Month with Joseph Grenny

MENTOR #58: Dr. Brian Harris "The Future of Digital Dental Marketing" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:39

Brian's "Story" from his website https://www.harrisdental.com/dr-brian-harris HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT RUNNING/WORKING FOR THIS BUSINESS? WHAT PATH BROUGHT YOU HERE? Growing up around dentistry, my dad would take us to work with him during the summer. We would get paid $2 per hour to unpack boxes, clean the lab, make stone models of teeth, etc. I realize now after having my own kids, he really did it so we wouldn’t drive my mom crazy at home fighting all summer. Several years passed and after living out of the country for a few years, I returned home and it just felt like the right path for me. I have never regretted the decision and love being a dentist. WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A WEEKEND OR A SUNDAY AFTERNOON? When I am not working, I try to stay active running and biking. I spend a lot of time with my kids at their football games, dance classes and skateboarding lessons. On Sunday afternoons you will find me relaxing and watching a movie with my family. ANY VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES YOU’RE CRAZY ABOUT? I have been involved with the group, Smiles for Hope, for 5 years now. It takes dentistry into the small villages of the Dominican Republic. I was able to take my wife Maury with me four years ago and this year we went back with my two older boys, Connor and Cash, and 6 Harris Dental team members. We spent 9 days in small villages helping people that have no access to dental care. It has been a life changing opportunity and I feel thankful to be a part of such a great group. ANY AWARDS OR MEDALS? PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL? In the 5th grade, I won first place in the Utah open Karate tournament. I only mention this because I had to fight my brother, Dr Scott, in the finals. Let’s just say he took second place. Still, one of my proudest moments. Professional: Young Dentist of the Year in 2007, Phoenix Magazine Top Dentist 2007-2013, Phoenix Magazine Top Cosmetic Dentist 2010-2013, AZ Foothills Scottsdale’s Best Cosmetic Dentist 2014. HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? I want to be remembered as a person who was positive and always looked for the good in others. I want to be remembered as someone who enjoyed life to the fullest. WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING TRIP YOU HAVE EVER TAKEN? WHY? The most interesting and fun trip I have ever taken was going to Ireland with Maury. I was taken aback by how beautiful it is. I loved trying new foods, seeing ancient landmarks and learning about the history of the country. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BREAKFAST FOOD? French toast with lots of butter and syrup. WHAT FAVORITE FOOD PUTS YOU IN A GREAT MOOD? Ice Cream WHAT 1 THING WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU ON A DESERTED ISLAND? Floss

MENTOR #55: Dr. David Montz "Leadership Learned From Hurricane Harvey" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:28

Our 2018 Team of the Year recognizes not just the outstanding effort of the team but the heroic efforts of their doctor. When 50 inches of rain and almost 19 Trillion gallons of water fell on Texas, this team jumped into action helping family, friends, neighbors and complete stranger with any task that needed to be done. Their doctor…for four straight days, volunteer managed a shelter at the local high school where they served 286 people, coordinated over the activities of over 300 volunteers and provided emergency care for 89 Nursing Home residents who arrived without charts, medication or staff to help. As the immediate crisis ended, the team even gathered at the office and after cleaning it up from the damage that came from the storm, made the distributed over 900 hygiene kits to 7 different shelters and donation centers. The full story of this experience and this team would take us hours to tell…but might be best described in the words of one team member. She worte, “This is seriously the best family ever to work together! I am truly grateful for each and every one of them. How can a dental practice be so little about clinical dentistry and so much about the people?! When your team understands that we take care of each other first, and the awesome by-product of that is stellar patient care...now that is a beautiful thing! They're going to have to bury me here, because these people- the docs, the assistants, the hygienists, and the admin...they rock my world!"
