 028 – She Makes Hats | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:27

My guest this week is Robyn Devine and she runs the Etsy shop She Makes Hats. Robyn was referred to me by a past guest, Gloria of Creative Glo and I am so glad for the referral. Robyn describes herself as Chief Hat Maker (which she is) and her bio is simply "wife, mama, knitter", but I want to take the liberty of adding Rockstar to her bio. :)  She's so humble when it comes to talking about all the wonderful things she's doing, from donating consistently to charity with every Etsy sale she makes and through drives she organizes on her website SheMakesHats.com. And as if all that wasn't enough for this mama of two very little ones... She also just wrote a book! Guess the title... Yep, She Makes Hats! (Robyn's affiliate link) There's so much good stuff Robyn shares in this conversation and  I hope you'll enjoy listening to her as much as I enjoyed speaking with her.  024 – iMakeTheCase Dan Safkow | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:11

Dan Safkow has successfully made the transition from corporate marketing to a full-time ecommerce career in the handmade industry. After spending more than 20 years working with marketing and promotional agencies serving clients like HBO, Disney, and Panasonic, Dan has created a business for himself selling one-of-a-kind laser-engraved phone cases and other bamboo/wood products in his Etsy shop iMakeTheCase. Unlike most Etsy sellers, Dan considers himself a "creative marketer" more than an artist and in our conversation you'll hear exactly why he holds this philosophy and how it has helped to shape and direct the success he has found on Etsy. This is a very exciting conversation because Dan shares lots of marketing tips and tools for increasing views and shares of your Etsy shop and the items you sell, as well valuable information about outsourcing - how he uses it to help him be more productive and, yes, more profitable too! If you have an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, I can almost guarantee that you'll find a case in Dan's iMakeTheCase shop that just screams your name, and if you do, Dan has graciously offered all podcast listeners $5.00 off any purchase if you use the coupon code "CONVO" at checkout :) Thank you Dan! The best way to reach Dan is through his Etsy shop - iMakeTheCase. You can also check out the iMakeTheCase Facebook page and his website iMakeTheCase.com.  026 – Love Teacup Kisses | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:11

My guest this week is my neighbor of sorts... Tatyana owns the Etsy Shop Love Teacup Kisses and she also lives right here in the San Francisco Bay Area! She is an illustrator and loves super cute, sassy, and fun art (just check out the treasury below). We talk about her Etsy journey which started with another Etsy shop and how having that first shop helped her to hit the ground flying with this new shop. Tatyana shares her experience with social media and how she uses it to drive traffic to her shop and more importantly, to make sales. Tatyana's story is so inspiring because she just recently graduated from the Academy of Art Institute and within the first two months of opening Love Teacup Kisses, the shop is already profitable and is getting her some great freelancing work too! She also has a YouTube channel and is using a strategy which I think is excellent for almost every Etsy seller because some of us love watching the stories behind the end products ;) Ways to reach Tatyana: Etsy shop: Love Teacup Kisses Twitter: @Avosays Facebook: Facebook.com/AvoArtist Pinterest: Pinterest.com/TeacupKisses Tumblr: LoveTeacupKisses.Tumblr.com Website: AvoArt.com Blog: AvosLife.com YouTube Channel: LoveTeacupKisses (I've watched all her videos so far and I think I "Liked" them all! :) ) Love Teacup Kisses Treasury Luna Bluehair Cutie 1.5 inch...  025 – Creative Glo | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:11

I am so glad this week's guest found me out there in the podcastosphere! Gloria owns the Etsy shop Creative Glo where she sells her crochet and knit items. Gloria left a very nice 5-star review in iTunes for the podcast and because I sometimes watch the show's reviews like a hawk, when I saw the review I put my sleuthing (stalker?) skills into action and found her to thank her personally. We found out we had quite a bit in common,  including both being pharmacists, and I just knew she would be a great guest for the show. She's juggling a lot of plates so we have a good discussion about balancing all the different activities and demands of life while also running a business on the side. Best of all, Gloria donates 20% of the revenue from all sales to charity and she shares how she chooses which ones to support. A lot of Etsy sellers dread social media but not Gloria. Hear how she leverages social media to promote her shop and drive traffic to it.  023 – Vadis Artist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:51

This week's podcast guest is Heather Davis and she is the artist behind the Etsy shop Vadis Artist. She graduated from art school in 2011 and really hit the ground running even though it hasn't been all smooth sailing. Heather shared the ups and downs she has encountered as part of her journey into building an art-based business, from providing illustrations for a children's book to creating custom art for phone covers, Heather has had a lot of useful experiences which she openly shares about today. Her current project is very exciting. She's running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to help bring her unique hand-painted art on wood to the market. I think this is a very unique (sorry for the repetition :) ) way for Etsy sellers to raise funds for their business in order to produce their handicrafts and my conversation with Heather about this whole process was very educational and quite inspiring actually.  022 – Natasha Wescoat Original Art | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 41:52

I first heard Natasha Wescoat on another podcast and about 7-10 minutes into the episode I had to literally put it on pause and get onto my computer and send her an email. I just knew she would be an absolutely fabulous guest to have on the podcast. Thankfully she agreed to come on and this week I am simply thrilled to have her as my guest. Natasha is a full-time artist and quite literally a supermom. Her Etsy shop is WescoatArt and she is up to some amazing things as far as the world of Etsy is concerned. We talk about her journey into the art world and how she has made been able to make a full-time living as an artist, and now she's giving back. Natasha is an art business coach and she has just launched a brand new online course called Etsy Engage which teaches you not just how to sell on Etsy but more importantly, how to build a successful business on Etsy. We go into a LOT of detail about her new course and it's good stuff ;) We also talk about using social media to promote your Etsy business. Now, since she was able to snag the Twitter handle of @natasha (yes, just her first name!) you can sure she has a lot of value and good information to share on the world of social media as it relates to your Etsy business :) This conversation is not just interesting, it is also very educational and inspirational. Connect with Natasha: Etsy shop - WescoatArt Natasha's blog - WescoatFineArt.com Online Etsy business course - Etsy Engage (Side note: I get nothing for recommending this course to you, I just really think it has a lot of value to offer Etsy sellers and artisans who have a desire to create and grow a business based on their art/craft and their handmade products/crafts.)  021 – Angela J. Holden | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:13

If you've been a long time listener of this podcast OR, if you've gone back in the archives and listened to every episode from the beginning, then you'll immediately recognize this name - Angela J. Holden. I am sooo thrilled to have Angela on the podcast this week, well actually, "back" on the podcast this week because Angela is the one who actually started the Etsy Conversations Podcast! :) I was an avid listener to the podcast when Angela used to host it, then the show was taken over by Mary Mailler but when there were no more new episodes I hunted Angela and Mary down and asked if I could take over the podcast. She and I immediately clicked and the rest is history. Angela and I have stayed in touch ever since and I have been looking forward to the day when she would be able to come back on the podcast and give an update about all she's been up to, and now that day has finally arrived :) There is so much good stuff in this episode and in our conversation, I don't even want to begin to list all what we talked about. Angela is now a WordPress Front End Developer for a real estate design firm and even though she does that full time, she's also working on personal projects in web design that are of great benefit to Etsy sellers who want to really take their Etsy business to the next level and stand out in the crowd. Angela's Etsy shop is Angela J. Holden and there you'll find all the web design services and offerings she has for Etsy sellers. She shared so many resources and I am including all the links below if you'd like to do some more digging on your own as you make a decision about what is best for you and your Etsy business. Resources mentioned in this episode: Responsive Video Gallery and CraigJHansen.com - samples of Angela's work Go Daddy, Register.com, and FatCow.com - for domain registration Media Temple (Angela uses this one) and Rackspace - for website hosting (I use HostGator [affiliate link] for this site) Fairground Media - WordPress plugin Angela uses for integrating your Etsy shop into your WordPress website (it costs $39 and this cost is not included in her pricing) How to reach Angela: Website - AngelaJHolden.com Email - AngelaJHolden [at] gmail [dot] com Etsy shop - Angela J.  020 – KB Originals Etc. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:12

When I read Kim's About page and she confessed that she had skipped classes in school just to work in the pottery studio and now she was making her living selling her earthenware pottery full time on Etsy... I knew she and I had to have an Etsy Conversation ;) Kim Berger owns the Etsy shop is KB Originals Etc. where she sells functional pottery and handmade personalized pet dishes. Say goodbye to bland metal bowls for your pets because when you see what Kim makes for pets, you just might want to get them for every pet lover you know. Kim says "Pottery life is good" and it certainly is for her. She is fortunate enough to be doing Etsy full time, making and selling things she loves. We get to talk about her transition from full-time employment going all the way full time into Etsy. I was so intrigued by this because I think it is the desire of a lot of a Etsians to make this transition and Kim has lots to share and some good information to pass on to others that are aspiring to reach this same goal. When she's not working on her Etsy shop - KBOriginaltEtc. - you can also also find and follow Kim on Facebook and Twitter. PS: please take a minute to leave a review of the podcast in iTunes and/or Stitcher. That really helps to get the word out about the show :)

 019 – Bing Art by Rachel Bingaman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:27

My guest this week is a mover and shaker in the art world... Okay, those are my words not hers, but I think that's a fact. Rachel Bingaman is a professional artist based in the Washington DC area whose medium of preference is oil. Rachel owns the Etsy shop Bing Art. Rachel's work is fascinating and very eye-catching, so it's no wonder that it has caught the attention of major TV networks, including NBC and The Discovery Channel, who have featured her pieces on their network shows as recently as last year. I won't spill the beans here, but in our conversation Rachel shares more about that and how she got to show her art on these national platforms. More recently, one of her landscape paintings was included the book "The Custom Art Collection: Art for the Contemporary Home" by Jamin & Ashley Mills. She shares her experience selling in galleries and online on Etsy in addition to art and craft shows; there's a lot to learn from Rachel. We talk about the inspiration behind her art, how she balances her time and manages her schedule as a full-time professional artist, wife, and mother. I think you'll find Rachel's story to be very inspiring. In addition to her Etsy shop - Bing Art, you can also find and connect with Rachel on her Facebook page and her blog - Bing Art by Rachel Bingaman. Mary Deighton runs the Etsy shop Mare Design Boutique and she's back on the podcast this week to give an update on what she's been doing with her both her Etsy and graphic design business. Mary offers monogram ornaments and custom invitations in her Etsy shop and she is simultaneously running an offline graphic design business as well. We discuss how she balances the two and what her plans are for each going forward. Currently she's growing her Etsy product line and we discuss the ins and outs of that. In addition to her Etsy shop, Mare Design Boutique, you can also find and follow Mary on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and her own personal blog.   PS: please take a minute to leave a review of the podcast in iTunes and/or Stitcher.  017 – Modern Mermaid Design | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:52

Modern Mermaid Design is the week's spotlighted Etsy and Jeanie is the "shop keeper" behind it. Jeanie is managing her growing Etsy business and offline sales in boutiques, as well as holding down full-time outside of her crafting business and she has a wealth of great tips to share on time management and business planning. Jeanie describes herself as a modern mermaid, but don't get it twisted, she is very deliberate about her business and I picked up some really helpful business tips from her. She makes and sells handcrafted beach-themed jewelry and prior to selling her creations on Etsy she was successfully selling them in boutique stores. We talk about Etsy teams and other shop promotion methods, if you've ever been curious about what the Etsy team games are all about we get into that in our conversation as well. If you haven't created a business plan for your Etsy business, you'll hear Jeanie talk about not only how essential it is, but how easy and uncomplicated it can be. Check out Jeanie's jewelry in her Etsy shop - Modern Mermaid Design. You can also find and follow her very easily on Facebook and Twitter.  016 – Pop-Up Shops by Storefront | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:52

Storefront is a start-up that's changing the way online sellers like Etsy sellers do business in the offline brick and mortar world. I know, I know... You started selling on Etsy to take advantage of the international marketplace and global traffic that selling on Etsy provides but Storefront is offering a unique service that doesn't detract from your online selling pursuits, but instead aims to balance it with a physical presence...on an "as needed" basis. Experiential retail... Sound intriguing? Well it did to me, and that's just part of what I talk about with Tristan Pollock, co-founder of Storefront, a San Francisco-based company whose mission is to get people who have something to sell connected with a place (offline) to sell it, be that retail stores, community events and/or conferences, etc. I first connected with Tristan on Twitter and found the whole idea quite interesting at a time when everyone seems to be looking to get into the online arena. After exchanging a few emails and talking on the phone, I decided it would be nice to introduce their service to you and have Tristan explain it in his own words since I didn't trust myself to write up a blog post that would do it justice. As with all service providers, Storefront offers a paid service and I want to point out that I have absolutely no financial relationship with the company. I am not a paid affiliate of theirs and I get no money or other incentive for promoting their service. This is truly an "I think you should at least take a look at what these folks are offering" kinda deal. :) Since this not a major holiday shopping season Storefront might be good to re-visit during the busy selling season if you're thinking about having more selling venues for your handmade crafts and looking to expand your crafting business during that season. After listening this time around, you can simply bookmark this post and the podcast interview and come back to it when you think the time is right for you. If you'd like to learn more about what Storefront has to offer you as an Etsy seller, they've put together a handy pop-up guide that teaches you how to open up shop in your city, it's called the Ultimate Guide to Opening a Pop-Up Shop and there's even a section solely dedicated to Etsy sellers. The guide is free but you'll have to provide them with your email address to get it. If you're looking for ideas and inspiration for taking your crafts offline (in addition to still selling on Etsy of course) then check out the Storefront blog and read about how others have done it and what their experiences were like. PS: please take a minute to leave a review of the podcast in iTunes and/or Stitcher. That really helps to get the word out about the show :)

 015 – Zoharous | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:40

This week I reach a milestone of sorts, I interview my first international Etsy shop owner! Belinda is my guest this week and her Etsy shop is Zoharous; she lives in Accra, Ghana and I was thrilled to find out that she is a loyal listener to the podcast. In our conversation you'll learn how Belinda taught herself to sew out of boredom and has now turned her passion for fashion and sewing into a side business. We also talk about something I have wondered about for a long time regarding international sellers and PayPal. Hear how Belinda got creative in her business and figured out how to make lemonade from lemons ;) Aside from selling on Etsy, Belinda also runs an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) with a friend. I was completely intrigued by the good work they are doing and how they are helping children in Ghanaian secondary schools (i.e. high schools) get a hands-on education in science. When she's not working on her Etsy shop, you can also find Belinda writing on her blog; she's also on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin (login required), Pinterest, and Google Plus. To learn more about Belinda's NGO, you can check out this blog post and read more about the project (and see a video too) on Indiegogo too.  014 – Curious Art Lab | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 41:25

This week I talk to a fellow self-professed introvert, Leah Palmer-Preiss. Leah and I immediately clicked when we discovered that we were both introverts and both extremely nervous about the podcast (luckily for her, she only had to be nervous this time... I get to be nervous every single time :) ). I first found out about Leah when she left a review of the podcast in iTunes, so again I say "Thank you so much Leah for the iTunes review!!" :) Leah is a professional illustrator and calligrapher and she owns the Etsy shop Curious Art Lab where she sells her original paintings and art prints. Her work has appeared in publications such as the New York Times (...yes, that one, THE New York Times) and Cricket Magazine Group. We get to talk all about this in our conversation on the podcast and I think you'll be just as fascinated as I am about what she's done and continues to do in the art world. You'll hear how she uses social media to connect with fellow artists and the tactic (or strategy) she used to successfully drive paying customers to her Etsy shop right from the early days of opening it. Fair warning: I take Leah off-track a bit with a conversation about Mad Men (the TV show), but you'll hear why, and it will all make sense, when you listen to the podcast ;) In addition to her Etsy shop, Curious Art Lab, Leah also has her own website, LeahPalmerPreiss.com where she blogs and displays even more of her artwork. You can also find her on Twitter (her favorite social media venue), Tumblr, Facebook, and Google Plus. If this is your first encounter with Leah and her artwork, please let her know you heard about her on the Etsy Conversations Podcast. If you'd like to leave feedback on this episode please feel free to do so in the comments section below.  013 – Smithy Jewelry | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:26

Welcome to another week's episode of the Etsy Conversations Podcast! This week I am thrilled to have April as my guest. April owns the Etsy shop Smithy Jewelry and I found her absolutely intriguing the more we talked because her background and experiences were so unique. April's jewelry is inspired by a combination of Bohemian art deco and art nouveau and you'll get to hear how she developed a keen interest in early twentieth century fashion at an early age. We also get to hear a little bit about how things work behind the scenes on TV shows because April graduated from film school and works a day job in network TV. April is an eclectic individual and I am so glad she shared some of her future aspirations with me on the podcast. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation as much as we did having it. You can find April's Etsy shop at SmithyJewelry. She's also on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. PS: please take a minute to leave a review of the podcast in iTunes and/or Stitcher.
