Summary: What if everything you thought you knew about weight loss was wrong? When it comes to most things in life, we welcome research and progress. From the convenience of our smartphones to the technology in our hospitals, scientific advancement allows us to live better. So why are we still following weight-loss advice from the 1950s? Why haven’t we ever questioned the “calories in/calories out” model at the foundation of every diet and fitness plan—a formula that, not coincidentally, has accompanied record-breaking levels of obesity? In The Smarter Science of Slim Show, Jonathan Bailor, author of The Calorie Myth, exposes the fundamental flaw upon which the diet industry is built and offers a new equation: EAT MORE + EXERCISE LESS = WEIGHT LOSS Free 28 day eating/exercise program: www.bailorgroup.com/freeprogram You don’t have to go hungry or spend hours exercising to get healthy & be happy. When you learn the new science of eating and exercise, slim is simple.

So here we go! Between “standard” SSoS podcast episodes I’ll share SSoS interviews etc. from all around the world and web. I hope these are helpful…and heck, if they’re not, or if they become repetitive (interviewers tend to ask me similar questions), feel free to skip them :) For this week, here’s an interview I did with Ben Greenfield. Get-Fit Guy’s Guide to Achieving Your Ideal Body: A Workout Plan for Your Unique Shape (Quick & Dirty Tips)     Jonathan Bailor http://www.facebook.com/TheSmarterScienceOfSlim http://twitter.com/#!/jonathanbailor   Transcript Jonathan Bailor-  Hey everyone, happy to have another Smarter Science of Slim “bonus” podcast.  This week I’m actually really, really excited to talk with a guy who has a special place in my heart.  His name is Ben Greenfield – just an awesome podcaster and blogger.  But even more importantly than that, someone who supported the Smarter Science of Slim back in the early, early days.  Actually Ben recorded a podcast with me -the first ever podcast I recorded- even a year before The Smarter Science of Slim came out.  So, Ben saw something that he liked and was there to support.  So, wanted to give Ben a shout-out here and provide any support we can offer him.  Ben, how ya doing today?   Ben Greenfield-  Good.  Way back in the dinosaur days, huh, man?   Jonathan- Totally!  I feel like we were communicating via the strings with the cans on either end and now we have Skype.   Ben- Yeah, technology has come a long way.  My computer no longer fills up my entire office.  It’s this small portal sitting on my desk – it’s crazy.    Jonathan- Speaking of technology, I know one thing you’ve had a lot of personal success with, and that I get a lot of questions about and I was hoping you could tell us about, is performance.  Specifically, I’d like to focus on endurance performance without eating a bunch of starches and sweets.  Because Ben, you know, that we hear this traditional dogma of “carbo-loading” – it’s really just synonymous with endurance performance.  I haven’t studied endurance performance too much, but I know you have a lot of experience there.  So, could you just give us your take on the avoidance of starches and sweets when it comes to endurance and triathlon-like performance.   Ben-  Yeah, sure.  The concept of consuming carbohydrates as a primary fuel while you’re out running a marathon or doing a long bike ride, is based off the idea of hitting the wall.  You’ve probably heard of that, right Jonathan?   Jonathan- Absolutely.   Ben- Bonking.  It’s a pretty crappy place to be for anybody it’s happened to.  Basically, it’s  when you’re body runs out of stored carbohydrates.   Meaning, you’ve got two primary places where you store carbohydrate – your liver and your muscles.  Once you deplete all that carbohydrate, which typically takes about two hours or so of moderate aerobic exercise, you start to get dizzy, weak, light-headed, and your performance suffers.  The answer to that, especially back in the marathoning days of the 80’s and on forward even to today, is that you eat a higher carbohydrate diet – so you always have your liver glycogen stores and your muscle glycogen stores topped off.  That works – you will be able to perform pretty well when you are keeping your glycogen levels topped off.  But there’s a health trade off.   Meaning that when you are constantly elevating your blood s[...]

We talked about how we have to exercise less in order to clear our hormonal clog because to clear our hormonal clog, we have to work on muscle fibers. We have to work on more metabolically beneficial muscle fibers and to do so, we use more energy quickly, which means we have to exercise less and we have to exercise less frequently but it’s not something too good to be true gimmick because eccentric training is quite challenging and it leaves us quite sore. That’s part of the reason we can’t do a lot of it and we can’t do it frequently and I promise that this week we are going to talk a bit more specifically about how to actually do it. Carrie: Alright. Jonathan: So we are talking about how to exercise eccentrically. Folks, I just want to give a quick disclaimer, trying to describe how to do exercises truely using the spoken word is a bit challenging but we are going to do the best that we can here and there are some videos from the smarterscienceofslim.com that make this a bit easier but the good news is that these aren’t new exercises, it’s just a way to take existing exercises and do them different, to do them smarter, a general rule of thumb, general steps, remember eccentric means extending. We are talking about slowly lowering weight and the general way we do this and there are ways to do this at home, there are ways to do it at the gym. We are going to talk about the at home stuff today as I also like to maybe have some time to talk about how we can do cardiovascular exercise smarter as well but that might have to wait until next week. We will see how this goes. How do we exercise eccentrically generally? So first thing we want to do is we want to get warmed up and then we want to pick a resistance and again we want to talk about how to do this specific exercise but these are like the five rules, so get warmed up. Step two is to pick a resistance that we can’t lift with the one arm or one leg but we can easily lift with both arms or both legs, so for example let’s say 20 pounds, so we can’t lift 20 pounds with one arm but we can lift it with both arms. Okay, that’s sort of the weight we pick to begin with. Then we lift the resistance with both arms or both legs and when we do this, each arm and each leg will be lifting half of the resistance, makes sense so ten pounds each. Then, we’re going to slowly lower all of the resistance with one arm or one leg for ten seconds, so now each arm or each leg lowers all the weight or 20 pounds. You might again be asking yourself well, if I couldn’t lift 20 pounds with one [...]

Jonathan Bailor and Carrie Brown here, living the Smarter Science of Slim. And folks, I got to tell you. I just learned some shocking news about Carrie Brown. So here is a question. Carrie just told me she bought some xylitol and xylitol is a non-caloric sweetener which is quite SANE. She told me she bought some xylitol. And I said ‘OK, that’s cool, that’s cool’. How many pounds of xylitol – pounds mind you – of xylitol do you think our dear Carrie Brown purchased? 1 pound, 2 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds? No dear listeners, Carrie purchased 55 pounds of xylitol! Apparently Mount Rainier is going to explode, as she has told me, and she will be able to make SANE, sweet dishes forever. Carrie: Mount Rainier, accept it or not. Hey, no I just took last week’s podcast to heart. You told us to buy everything in bulk – I take everything you say very seriously, Jonathan. Jonathan: I buy 25 pound bags of cocoa so there’s no… 55 pounds though is a new record. Carrie: Don’t listen to him. Let me tell you what I am going to do with all that xylitol. I am going to make you SANE ice cream and SANE cookies and SANE cakes and you are going to love me forever, but I have to have a lot xylitol to do that. So don’t listen to him. Jonathan: I love it. Well, speaking of xylitol… no, this segway is going to make no sense… ha ha… let’s talk about how you need to drink a lot of green tea and water while going SANE – it didn’t make any sense because I was thinking of something else in my brain. I was thinking of other sweetener solutions. I think we have covered this in another podcast but let’s cover it again here. Caloric sweeteners, totally inSANE. So sugar, corn syrup, agave nectar, honey, all that stuff, I don’t care. There is a list of like 55 different sweeteners on the website, check them out, they are bad. Non-caloric natural sweeteners, ‘natural’, ‘non-caloric’ is key. Carrie: Xylitol is made from birch. Jonathan: Xylitol, stevia or luo han guo are all great options, completely SANE. In the middle is artificial, non-caloric sweeteners so these are things like Splenda, Sweet’n’Low, Equal, if you have to choose between sugar and high-fructose corn syrup and honey and those things and Splenda, I would take the Splenda, but again try to go towards the natural, non-caloric ones whenever possible. But of course if you are drinking – like Carrie says, like I say, it’s about being better not being perfect – if you currently drink Coke, drinking Diet Coke is better. Don’t worry about ‘I can’t never drink soda again’. Just go with the non-caloric sweetened version. Here is a good segway to step four of the five steps of helping you go SANE. Carrie: Carrie’s achilles’ heel. Jonathan: Carrie’s achilles’ heel. We’re not talking about sod[...]
